To be honest, I think it's pretty common It's just always good to be looking for other (more productive things) to make you happy as well. There's nothing wrong with a healthy dose of gaming to lift your spirits! And heck, I look and many of my friends who turn to drugs, alcohol, etc. to fill the depression and I realize gaming actually a pretty good alternative ...in most cases...

Definitely. The world is a terrible place full of awful things, so sometimes it's healthy to leave earth and explore hyrule, onett, or kanto because in those worlds, you can make things good and happy. Whatever it may be; parents divorcing, being bullied, feeling helpless, getting sick, or anything else that you are unable to change is so painful to face the reality sometimes and finding a haven in nintendo and video games is perfectly fine to use. Especially since the alternatives like drugs, self-harm, and violence are far worse.

Lol I'm not feeling suicidal atm, but appreciate the community here, despite all my trolling in the form of please undastanding. Actually now to think of it I haven't heard of iwata saying it in quite some time now, so maybe I'll change my icon.

@DualWielding: I'm glad that games are helping you to cope with your depression, but you also need to remember that it could be a slippery slope. I was watching some videos on the subject of video game addiction (or compulsion as the video terms it). Games are a fantastic way to escape reality, but facing reality is also necessary. As long as they are helping you, play them, but also know when to stop playing. It's like medicine, in the prescribed amount it's healthy, but overdosing isn't going to be healthy in the long run. You have my best wishes and I hope that you will find joy in your life again.

Found a related article recently about research into Gaming and Depression for Elderly people.

http://medicalxpress.com/news/2014-08-games-ease-elderly-depr...

Although the sample group was small, it shows promise for gaming as an adjunct to other treatments.

Personally, I found gentle gaming more beneficial for anxiety - particularly Pilot Wings and Williams Pinball on 3DS.

My anxiety was once so bad, I could not pick up the 3DS for two days to play Resident Evil Mercenaries.

Now I just love shooting those zombies on RE4 and REM.

Perhaps I see characters in those I transfer my anger toward ... sort of.

Playing games where you can murder things without regret is a pretty logical choice for stress relief.

Though yeah using it as a substitute for real life is a terrible, awful thing that no one should even think about, ever.

I think you are right. I don't believe people should be playing video games if they are using it as a substitute for life. I think that when people are in that mind frame, it's time to put the controller down and get help. I wish mental health was talked about more in the United States because I believe many people would benefit from it.

hmm, it's interesting, I remember times when gaming has made it better for me and also times where it's made me muuuuuuuch worse. I like having games as a pick-me-up if I'm feeling down, but if I play for too much I get detached from reality. There was a phase where I couldn't sleep, so I'd just play games all night until I collapsed.

always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)

Agreed. My video game playing ratio usually goes up in proportion to my depression levels. When it gets really bad I go into a Zelda binge. I've suffered from depression since childhood as I was involved in a pretty bad accident (nothing too terrible but I lost an eye from it) and I was really suicidal at the time trying to cope with my new existence and having to deal with other kids that thought it was funny. I hadn't realized until I became an adult how much Zelda came to mean to me since I associate the series with playing it so much when I got out the the hospital and couldn't go to school. It is the only game series that I play that no matter what I'm in tears by the end (happy tears mind you but still).

Either way hold on my friend. Yes, life can be really crappy at times and sometimes other people make it worse, but there is a lot of awesome beauty in this world and a number of awesome people in it as well. Hold out for the good stuff.

I'm indeed going to therapy and I don't play that much since I have to work on getting my thesis done........ However, finding the gaming hobby once again last year has really helped me to deal to distract my mind from the hopelessness....

I myself believe video games could bring someone out of depression, sort of a specialized treatment, if it works for you, then good for you, I wish you well.

And this is why i'm in the "cautious about this thread" boat tbh.
If you've got serious mental issues that hinder you from living an at least functional life over a longer period of time you better go see a therapist imo. I'm not saying you're saying otherwise but i think that should be made very clear.

If you're in therapy and think gaming helps you, you should tell your therapist about it.
If you're not in therapy yet just don't think gaming will definitely solve any of your problems.
Carry on.

Even though I suffer from depression, whenever I play games, It makes me feel happy. I can't stop laughing or smiling when playing Nintendo stuff because in the end, its all worth it and I love Nintendo so much because of them giving me happiness and joy. Of course there are other games outside Nintendo that do this but majority of it goes to Nintendo.

Never said it did.

I do know the problems of unqualified discussions about depression. The best person to talk to about this is a professional. Nobody here is one.

You make it sound like depression is some kind of social leprosy. No get back unclean one until you've been healed, or something.

Hmm guess I sort of do agree with your stance, there's no point in letting a potential treatable and life-altering condition go unresolved (not saying that's the case here ofc).

Always keep fighting the 'good' cause...that being, the 'fun' cause...

I've found that major publishers can do all sorts of interesting things with their games, but infusing actual 'fun' into the experience seems to be pretty tough for quite a lot of them... 'Fun' is something Nintendo does exceptionally well...

I chuckled, but do be kind when people share issues closer to themselves But seriously, depression as is isn't always a mental issue, as it is often a biochemical one. So if depression is present in your life, an actual doctor can usually diagnose what it is you need. Helping people out of depression is often a medical issue - the mental state is then the symptom of it.

I understand games can have a very positive effect. If you have a creative personality, be careful not to respond on depressed state by intensifying gaming - you might create a subconscious association of your depressed state with gaming and be killing a beautiful and positive hobby for you in the process.

And, thanks for sharing about elements in your life - it makes a fun community here at nintendolife more human and valuable.
