Topic: Gamestop Price Gouging?

@LinktotheFuture: You are correct. Sadly, Gamestop also tends to sell out of the darned things, while I recently saw at least 50 of them just sitting on the shelf at Best Buy. Gamestop's done a damn good job of convincing people who don't do their research to only shop there for video games no matter what! Not everybody, of course, but enough that stuff like this keeps on happening.

@Tails86: $40 is the standard price for new Squenix games on DS, not because of Gamestop, but because of Squenix.

It is true that first-party DS games tend to hold an unnecessary $5 markup at Gamestop. There's no good reason for it; just what people will pay, as has been said. The fact that Gamestop does so well when it treats it customers so poorly is the pure embodiment of my hate for our modern society of dumb-donkey go-with-the-flow loser sheep.

You have to look very carefully. For example I've noticed several copies of Farcry 2 that were priced at 39.99 and a few copies were priced 49.99, they let a few slip in there for an extra boost in cash. If that happends to you just bring the two differently priced games up to the counter. Or mabey the guys at my local Gamestop are just idoits

I have noticed that as well. I only go to Gamestop a few times a year if I just want to trade something in if I know I will not make much off of it on eBay or Amazon. Gamestop burned me a few times at the one near me anyways my friend used to be the assistant manager. The employees open new games take them home and play them bring em back and sell them new and sometimes the disc will be scratched and the manual worn. I remember he brought the original Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi for ps2 home when it first released and the two days later it was on the store shelf as NEW $49.99. Thats my biggest gripe with them so I usually stick to Amazon since new games are over 25 bucks and you can get free shipping, escape sales tax (at least in ILLINOIS not sure about everywhere else) and they usually take a few bucks off their regular price in addition. But in all fairness I go to Gamestop before I will go to Wal - Mart. The local Wal-Mart really treat their employees like dirt where I live.

They fudged the prices for

Rhythm Heaven
both Professor Layton games
Starfy
Fossil Fighters

and probably a lot more. It's a bit of a rip-off.

Well, games will be more expensive at places like GameStop and FYE because they sell them at the MRP because all they sell are smaller type of items like games, cds, dvds and systems. While, Wal Mart and Best Buy will sell them slightly cheaper because they hope a low ticket price on a game will make people want to buy a big HDTV at their store!

I think it will be a sad world when the only retail options are Best Buy, Wal Mart, and Target in the USA. So if you have the extra cash support the specialty media stores, at least their employees are pretty knowledgeable about video games! And they usually carry more obscure titles.

Finally a voice of of reason. What irks me is people who comment on business practices when they clearly have no knowledge of how small business vs big business works.

I worked at a chain music store in college and we had to explain this argument all the time. It's so hard for people that have no clue about business to wrap their brains around mega stores that have incredibly large and diverse selection of items compared to chain stores.

The voice of reason isn't a popular voice to be heard!

What irks me the most, is when people have good paying jobs and they just pirate all the games, music, and movies they have. That's just wrong. I belive that bad Karma will come back to haunt these people.

If you love entertainment support it with your wallet! Nobody rides for free except perhaps leaches. Don't be a cheap, greedy, pig support the industry and especially support the smaller companies.

What's amazing is that the voice of reason showed up in this thread and yet some still can't wrap their heads around the concept. Gamestop doesn't price gouge! They price based on being a specialty outlet store as opposed to a chain! They have no other source of income besides video games and video game related items. They don't have TV's, Washers, Dryers, Clothes, Food, Stereo's, etc. as another source of overhead that can afford them to price everything as low as the mega stores...this isn't a tough concept people Get an education, or better yet, get a job and then argue business...man...the amount of nonsense boggles my mind sometimes.

People commonly misunderstand how that happens. As you go through doing price changes, it's easy to miss some copies by simple mistake, or somehow not have enough stickers and get distracted by customers, forgetting to return. More copies sometimes come in before the price change has been done as well, but the newly traded games automatically have the newer price printed for them. Maybe this will help; check out the image below:

Look in the upper-right corner, between the title and the price. See those numbers? The first six digits are the date the sticker was printed, in MM/DD/YY format. If you see multiple copies with different prices listed, check for the most recent date. That should be the correct price. Sorry for the inconvenience this can be, but sometimes, it's simply unavoidable.

Side-note: Funny picture, huh? Idiots didn't replace the artwork from the competing store... Not a mistake I would make.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and the computer will automatically ring up the correct price regardless, because the bar code on the sticker brings up current computer info on the title regardless of the printed price. I hope that helps!
