Topic: Games You Recently Beat Mk II

We had a Recently Beaten games thread once upon a time. Decided to start up a new one. This is for games across all platforms.

Also, please no super long reviews. Try to keep it to one or two paragraphs.

To start: I just beat Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. I have to say, that...not worth the hype I had for it. I'd even say it was the worst Ratchet & Clank game I've yet played. The level design wasn't quite as super-tight as previous game, with some genuinely sloppy excecution here and there, such as putting a platform way down where you can't see, and you don't have Clank to slow your decent, thus making landing on the platform a total crapshoot. Or putting a gold bolt way out, with no return rought without exploiting glitches or dying. Then there's the checkpoints, which are too few and too spread out. R&C games were usually generous with the checkpoints, but here you could go 15, 20, even 30 minutes without a checkpoint. It's irritating. And of course, there's the glitches. I encountered tons throughout the game, way more than any other game in the series. Some were helpful, like the glitch that caused me to beat the final boss when I died. Others were not, like the glitch that prevented the game from reloading when I fell off a cliff. Oh, and speaking of cliff, what's with the cliffhanger at the end, huh? Literally nothing was resolved. The hell.

Overall, though it was still a good fun game. It had classic R&C gameplay, now a little more refined. The levels were large, thought out, and creative, with diverse mission structures. The mini games were fun. The writing was easily the best the series has seen, despite the cliffhanger and the fact that it retcons Going Commando ( I think that game was retconned by Up Your Arsenal, though...). All what we've come to expect from the series, though it is starting to wear thin. Hopefully the next game will be as great as people say.

i just beat tomb raider on 360 last night. I honestly am not sure what i thought of it, i did have a good time playing the last few nights but felt it could have done with more actual tomb raiding in the main storyline. basically apart from one or two all the tombs are optional and the rewards from doing them are very little. most of them being maps to find little hidden trinkets that do nothing except put your completion percentage up.

my main problem with this is that really all the puzzle elements of the game are contained in the tombs. with the rest of the game just containing uncharted style climbing sections, QTEs and shooting sections. i really feel the game would be much better if they had better integrated the puzzles in with the rest of the game play

basicly if this was my game id have called it forest shooter. still good fun, but id wait till it dropped in price a bit.

put it on.

I've completed a lot of games in the last week. I had 5 days off work, plus the long weekend for easter, and a regular weekend in the middle means 11 days off in a row!

For the first time ever I have played and completed A Link to the Past, Metroid, Kid Icarus and Pikmin. I'm currently playing Luigi's Mansion for the first time too. I have this OCD thing about wanting to play games in order, so before playing KI: Uprising and LM: Dark Moon, I had to go back to the start

I recently beat:
1) Mighty Flip Champs,3DS- great game, difficult enough to be satisfying but not frustrating, awesome music and interesting level design. Also, it's worth (and advised) going for the 'under par' times, since in many levels you can only achieve them by finding shortcuts, which adds some replay value and makes you feel smart for discovering them.
2)Need for Speed Most Wanted,PSvita- my most liked NFS game, the cars feel different from each other and trying them all out is worth your time, the races are engaging, but the 10 'bosses' were unfortunately very, very easy. It has a lot of replay value (without even going online) and the graphics were really great, especially for a handheld. Some glitches here and there, but nothing gamebreaking.
3)Wario Land 2,3DS- amazing platformer, with many and varied levels, branching paths and huge replay value. If you can, don't use any guides (or at least don't overuse them) and you will have a lot of fun. Also, don't worry about missing anything, since later in the game you'll get the ability to return in any level.

I just beat Fractured Soul for 3DS. Its a really great platformer that tests your skill. The only issue I have with this game is that is has too little shoot 'em up levels. They rank you out of 5 stars, and the more stars you get, the more levels you have. So overall, you have 31 tough-as-nails, yet fun game. Each level can take somewhere between 3 minutes beating, to 12 minutes. Catch me in the leaderboards

Scribblenauts Unlimited - Very enjoyable, probably the best of the three so far. The main gripe I had with it was with the gamepad more than the game, my hand got so sore holding the gamepad with one hand and using the stylus to type up things.

Dark Souls - I really hated it. I felt like I was actively punishing myself for playing it. I have no problem with a challenge, but I didn't enjoy Dark Soul's at all. I didn't really start to hate it until 7 hours in, about, so I finished it because I had already put so much time into it.

Resonance of Fate - Not a very good RPG, IMO. The story is absolutely abysmal, the characters were so flat, I can't even describe their personalities! Battle system was somewhat fun, though. All in all, though, just too much tedium for me.

After waiting forever to get it. beat Super Mario Galaxy 2 this week. I haven't gotten all 120 stars, but I beat Bowser, so, for me, that counts for now I loved it. It was much better than the original and may be my favorite Wii game.

I played through Dear Esther. I knew almost nothing about it until I played it. It left extremely confused afterwards, but I think I understand its "plot"

Also, after years of making fun of people for acting desperate for Half Life 3, I beat the two Half Life 2 episodes. I have become one of them.

Or any NES game ever. The entire game is just pattern Memorization and Trial and error (just like every NES game ever). Seriously, use a guide and it's suddenly one of the easiest games ever. Even without a guide, if you're cautious, the only thing you gotta worry about are Bosses, and again, it just requires a little trial and error to figure out the primary means of killing them. Dark Souls is cheap, not difficult, and once you learn its tricks, it's suddenly not so bad.

I have no problem with difficult games, none at all. (Heck, I can't get enough of F-Zero GX) But to me, Dark Souls was just painful. I tried to like it so bad, and I didn't hate it at first, but by the 7 hour mark, I just wanted to finish it. Every time I would start to enjoy it, some stupid trap would come out, or an overpowered enemy would come out of the corner, and I would die, have to walk all the way back, have something else dumb happen when I get past that part, and perhaps lose my money to boot. I actually had my brother walk me through the game, to beat it as fast as possible. I'm sorry, but I just don't see any appeal that Dark Souls has.

Because some people like games when they do that? Because a lot of games do all that, you know.

Also, you're not supposed to make a lot of progress in a game like Dark Souls. It's about making mistakes and learning from them. In a game like Dark Souls, you don't have to feel bad about doing things wrong, because the game is so cheap (again, cheap, not difficult. There's a difference), it's impossible to do things right the first time. That alone can make the eventual victory more satisfying. And now that you've learned from anything, if you do a second playthrough (which you totally should), you'll see how much you've grown, and how easy the game can be when you know what to expect and know what you're doing.

Touhou is not really a game that you can just go out and get a guide for it, ya you can look at videos for hours on people dodging all the Bullets, but I would rather not do that personally.

I'm in the middle of playing/re-playing a lot of games, so the last one I've actually beaten (and the only one this year besides 999, Bioshock Infinite and Sakura Wars) is Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon. I will say I'm still waiting for the retail title that's some 10/10 god-tier stuff instead of being so close and yet so far but this and Kid Icarus are the closest we've gotten...or I just need to get Virtue's Last Reward. Luigi's Mansion is less varied and more repetitive but is far more consistently solid in every way compared to Kid Icarus. ...weird comparison now that I think about it but it's a great little title nonetheless, is a very well done sequel and it's a good place to end off on while I take a well needed break from Mario titles (unless you count DKC, which I don't). Been playing multiplayer and maybe Nintendo is still slowly improving on 3DS in this regard since I can finally choose from different people's game, OH THANK GOD. Kid Icarus' online is so much more flawed when every other time I start I end up waiting minutes just to get to a game.

I'm gonna try to beat Cave Story (the freeware original) again with the true ending before going on vacation.

Isn't cheap gameplay supposed to be bad?

Once again, I have no problems with challenging games, my problem is with Dark Souls. I just never enjoyed it. Even when I would beat a boss, the only feeling I got was that more tedium awaited. The only positive feeling I got from it was when I beat it, not because I felt satisfied with the game, but because it I had finished it and could bury it. The game could have been immensely easy, or even harder than it was, I wouldn't have enjoyed it either way. To me, the whole concept of the gameplay, annoying and cheap deaths, followed by walking back to get a different cheap death, is just tedious and frustrating. You can go ahead and like it all you want, that's just fine, but I'm just not ever gonna understand why.

Mega Man 5 - Though it was still pretty fun and there were a few stages that really stood out to me (particularly Gravity Man's), I was somewhat disappointed in this one. I think a lot of it has to do with, as strange as this may sound, the music; aside from a couple of tunes, I really wasn't feeling the soundtrack in this one.

Granted, I did like the game's music quite a bit better when I gave it a re-listen the other day, but it's still my least favorite Mega Man OST so far.

Mega Man 6 - I really, really, really enjoyed MM6, probably more than most people. Between the awesome music (right up there with 2 and 3, for me), some of my favorite Robot Masters and stages, the gameplay balance between standard Mega Man & the Rush combinations and the small alternate paths/areas that can be accessed with the Rush powers, I'm hard-pressed to find anything I didn't like about it. I just had a ton of fun with it.

And I think it may just be the best-looking NES game ever made - which makes sense, considering it was also one of very last NES games ever made.

Mega Man X - I finally had a chance to play it for more than 5 minutes and, shocker, I thought it lived up to its lofty reputation. Beyond being a ludicrously fun action game, it was also a very "clean" experience; there was very little, if any, in the way of fluff or padding, with optional upgrades that were (occasionally) well-hidden without being placed too far out of the player's way or being a major hassle to access.

And I actually used nearly all of X's special weapons frequently throughout the game, which is something I rarely feel compelled to do in the classic series.

I've had Prime Trilogy for almost four years and I finally got around to finishing Echoes, and I hoestly think it's the best of the Prime trilogy.

This is actually my main gripe with the main series except for Mega Man 1. In 2-4, I'd finish a stage buster only, switch to the robot master's weakness and then wonder why I didn't use the special weapons at all. As vanilla as the Mega Buster is, it's a quick projectile which fires fast and goes in a straight line. I can't fathom how half the weapons in each game manage to be worse than the Mega Buster :/

always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)
