I think Super Mario 64 is definitely overrated. The graphics, controls, and camera have aged TERRIBLY in my opinion.
Also, I tried Animal Crossing New Leaf, and I just couldn't get into it or enjoy the gameplay. I don't see why people like the series.
I'm actually one of those people who like the Animal Crossing series. I think it's one of those games that definitely isn't for everyone. What I like about it though is being able to have a house, expand it, decorate it, decorate the town, and the mini games (tours) on the island are fun as well. That said, I personally enjoy it best by playing it 1 - 2 hours per day. Anything more and I find myself running out of things to do, though New Leaf certainly has more options than previous games.
edit: Sometimes I think reviews should take into account that different people view a game differently, so having one person review a game can lend itself to under/overrating a game. I'll sometimes check different sites to get a better idea of a game before I get it.
@LuckyLand The main quest of a game is far from superfluous. And I have been mostly sticking to it (besides wanting to move on to more games on my backlist and finish it before Skyrim comes out on Switch) because most of the side stories I have attempted have been boring. I don't care for the people, who despite there being hundreds of only have about 3 different faces (how many Martins are there in the world? You would think the guy who is probably the main character in the game outside of the player would at least have a unique face).

I didn't like Oblivion as much as Skyrim, either. I didn't play nearly as much, but I found it really hard to get into.
I ultimately quit after about 10 days because I didn't like how you weren't supposed to play it for less then an hour a day. (I'm the kind of guy that plays a game for hours on end.)
I think Animal Crossing actually made me think a bit about playstyles in that respect. Most games before that I could play for hours on end, and still have plenty to do, but Animal Crossing changed my expectations on how a game should be played. Another game that has done that is Pokémon Picross, where I ended up doing one training + 1 puzzle a day, which has worked out well so far, though occasionally I need to do just the training a few days to get to unlock the next area.
Beyond Good and Evil - A clear Zelda wannabe that failed in replicating any of the good stuff from any of the series. It was tedious to the very end - I had to play it all the way through to see why everyone said it was a classic. Everyone was wrong!
The Silent Hill series. Scary? Give me a break. They are games where you mostly walk around, mostly waiting for something to happen that mostly doesn't. The Project Zero/Fatal Frame games are far more unsettling and enjoyable.
MineCraft et al. I just don't get these games at all. I can play the Animal Crossing games forever (a game where you make the world your own), but five minutes with MineCraft and I'm asleep.
I'd have to add Xenoblade to the list. People pretend like that game's the second coming when it's really just a poorly written JRPG that loses its revenge motive and turns into a shonen with a bunch of discordant romance subplots.
Also if I wanted weightless, dimensionless combat I would play World of Warcraft — that figured out how to do backstabs in 2005.
This is a weird thread, lol. I don't think any one person can claim a game is overrated since it's only your personal preference. Well I guess you can but it is kind of pointless...
I would not touch GTA5 with a barge poll. I've not played it. I know it's not for me. Can I say it's overrated?
I've tried Minster Hunter several times and it's a mess. Is it overrated? It has a huge fan base who love it.
@Snaplocket I've played many games because of their soundtrack. That's different from saying I played them for the soundtrack 'and little else', especially during my first playthrough. Anyway, some examples off the top of my head:
Xenoblade Chronicles
Mother 3
Bastion
Silent Hill
Robots (GBA)
Resident Evil: Revelations
Darius Burst (the original PSP version)
Runbow
These are all titles I first played after giving the soundtrack a listen on YouTube and such sites. Some I knew a lot beforehand, some I knew little about other than the general concept. Almost all of them ended up being games worth playing. If we're talking about games I end up replaying to experience the soundtrack in context, then the list grows exponentially. Might as well list all my favorites.
@iKhan I loved Final fantasy XIII's and Smash 4's soundtracks and that doesn't stop me from finding numerous problems. Furthermore, who the heck plays a non-rhythm game just for the music?!
You misunderstand me. I didn't say you would overlook all the problems if there is a good soundtrack. What I mean is that a really good soundtrack in the right genre can entrance you in an atmosphere, such that you are less likely to see flaws. I genuinely think the House of Cards TV show is the best example of this for me. With Jeff Beal's score, the best seasons feel Breaking Bad caliber to me, and the worst seasons are no worse than "good", but the outside of the music, the series isn't THAT good, and definitely has genuinely bad low point.
Xenoblade Chronicles does that for me in game form. I don't care about a frustrating enemy, weak characters, or just "okay" story when I'm hearing the beautiful Snowy Valak Mountain theme or the Makna Forest theme in such a beautiful environment.
Pandora's Tower interestingly is the opposite. The great combat, story, and characters compensate for a limited soundtrack.
It's hard for me to determine what's overrated, mostly because everyone has different opinions about different games. I mean, that's fine and all, but it just involves a lot of projection into how other people think, when I don't really know for sure.
That said, Zelda: BOTW is the one game I played recently that I didn't really have as much fun with as I thought I would beforehand. I just really missed a more structured story that would guide me through place to place. I get that the story is supposed to be optional, but I just really didn't feel like the story that was there was good enough to hold my attention and motivate me to beat the game. So, I eventually got bored of the game and stopped playing (although I do plan on finishing it soon) even though I never thought going into the game that I would get bored with it.
@Snaplocket I actually am if the music is good enough. Robots on the GBA is irredeemable garbage, but the music is amazing. It's certainly not the norm, though. Bad games don't usually have good soundtracks.
Some of the games mentioned in this thread is like, man... do you even enjoy playing games?
I don't even like the word 'overrated'. It just a drama queen-ish way of saying I don't like something that is oft recognised as a good quality product that doesn't personally resonate with you.
@Peek-a-boo You seemed happy to direct your post at everyone else in this thread. I just have higher expectations for popular games than most people. I don't know why you all wouldn't.
You're quite free to leave this thread entirely and stop remarking about the people within it and whether they like video games or not.
The most overrated game is people who are so embarrassingly insecure that they have to give a **** that people tend to like a video game more than they did.
@Haru17 Crikey, who poured sour milk in your bowl of cereal this morning?
@Snaplocket I just play the games I like the look and sound of.
Some games I like more so than others however, I don't see the games I like comparatively less as overrated. I either enjoy them... or I don't! In any case, I shall leave you all to carry on with this discussion.
Mass effect. Played the first one, just a bad game, disappointing in every way.
It definitely is. If you get the opportunity to play the second game, then I think you should. Way better. No Mako segments.
OT: Played multiple Final Fantasy games, haven't understood the appeal of any of them.
Skyrim, is buggy as hell, it could be a passable First Person Hack & Slash if Bethesda actually started fixing things in it (which isn't going to happen, they're just going to keep re-releasing it, putting in the minimal amount of effort).
Smash Melee. I said it. Much prefer Brawl.
Pokemon Sun and Moon just aren't enjoyable to me. It would be a long post if I were to list all the issues I had with the game.

There seems to be a lot more insecurity in this thread on the other side of the spectrum IMO.
