I think Super Mario 64 is definitely overrated. The graphics, controls, and camera have aged TERRIBLY in my opinion.

Also, I tried Animal Crossing New Leaf, and I just couldn't get into it or enjoy the gameplay. I don't see why people like the series.

YES ALSO BLOODBORNE, decent game but easily the worst in the soul series

bloodborne was a great game but it had 0 replayability, mostly because the soft caps for stats were so incredibly low most builds were just slight variations... not to mention it had like 3 weapons, coop was awful, pvp was non existant, almost no builds, magic sucked hard

played it once and never touch it again, unlike all the other soul games

I think its wrong to say X game is overrated because NOW its not that good or it has aged terribly, you have to weight games for what they were in that time

if you think is overrated even by its time, thats another story, but to say it´s overrated because today, more than 20 years later is not that good, i find its not exactly fair

I don't know, there are some old games that I absolutely love still now, so I guess one can judge how good or bad a game has aged too.

@Anti-Matter From what I understand, you're saying putting skimpy women in games is overused rather than saying that exploiting women is immoral but exploiting men isn't, which is what I originally assumed you meant, so we're good.

Such a useless thread. There is no point to it. There's not even something to discuss.

Just some self-satisfying feelings here and there that nobody will care about.

Man, some major party poopers showing up in this thread. Consider clicking away and let us "hate on classic games" in peace.

@Faruko Some games are still called timeless even today, despite how clunky they actually are, like Ocarina of Time. Can you imagine the backlash if Nintendo used the same art style and everything for BoTW, but used Ocarina of Time animations and mechanics?

There's nothing wrong with liking games like OoT, but like I said, some people put on their nostalgia goggles and pretend it hasn't aged fairly poorly, which is inaccurate. In that regard, it's overrated.

I thought Xenoblade Chronicles was good, but not "best RPG ever" good like many people say. I'm also playing Oblivion now and greatly disappointed in it. I understand I'm playing it "wrong" by mostly sticking to the main storyline; but if there is a wrong way to play that even people who love the game say is boring, then it can't be an all-time great game like I have heard it being.

@KirbyTheVampire Maybe I have a pair of those 'nostalgia goggles' you mentioned - but I still feel that the N64 holds up pretty well - I've got no problem with the graphics whatsoever...there's the odd dodgy in-game camera here-and-there but, gameplay-wise, I think that the N64 library holds up far better than some give it credit for!

My set-up at home currently consists of a PC, PS4, Switch, Wii, N64 and a MegaDrive Classic - when I have friends over, the N64 is still pretty popular! ..maybe us older blokes just grew up with a deeper appreciation for polygons!

Pokemon Sun/Moon are so overrated. I have never put down a Pokemon game so fast as I did Sun. I beat the Elite 4 and all, but the motivation for me to even do the post-game quests was lost. The game just felt so cramped and it felt frustrating. The difficulty was all over the place, sometimes the AI was super smart. Sometimes the AI was brainless. The battles just felt very weird in the game (like my Pokemon were weaker than ever before, and the AIs Pokemon were more powerful). I'm a casual Pokemon fan. If I wanted to have to think about stats and raising my Pokemon with proper EVs/IVs I would enter the competitive scene, however that's not where I'm at. I want in-game Pokemon battles (as far as the storyline goes, the post-game battle facilities they can do what they want) to be simpler, like they were in all previous Pokemon games.

I feel like Super Mario Galaxy 1&2 are overrated, too. They were praised to the high heavens, put on such a pedestal. It's a complete wonder that Nintendo decided to try a game like 64/Sunshine again after that.

@Xyphon22 almost any game becomes awful if you play it the wrong way, it is just a normal thing. It is very weird that sticking to the main quest in a game is the wrong way to play it, I know it's weird but if you know that and you know you are spoiling your own game doing so I don't think you can really say it's a fault of the game. I love Oblivion, and its main quest is bad, I know, it's just like it is something that they added to the game and you can even completely forget about it and pretend a main quest does not even exist, that's the best way to play the game... It can seems weird I know that I'm saying such things about a main quest, but can you really blame a game because one superfluous thing in it is bad?

Yeah, out of all the rainfall games I felt Xenoblade was the weakest, the imo superior Pandora's Tower I felt was always overshadowed by it.

@Xyphon22 I had the same experience with Skyrim, but actually the other way round. I mostly ignored the main story and just explored the land. Unfortunately, I started getting bored relatively early, which is when I decided to go back to the main quest. Without knowing though, I had already finished the 2 expansions, and only had to finish the main one. When I finished that I had a feeling of "that's it?".

For this reason I was initially worried when I heard BotW was taking an open world approach, though I have so far not been bitten by the boredom bug, and I've yet to finish it. I can't quite put my finger on why this is unfortunately.

It could partly be that I didn't really grow up with the N64 or the systems before it. I had a ton of fun with the SNES and N64, but my family only bought a few games for it, whereas the first console that I could call my own and actually had a decent library for was the GameCube.

Either way, I definitely agree that the N64 as a whole was really impressive for its time.

KirbyTheVampire

@OfNullAndVoid Just walking around and doing the main questlines would definitely be boring. The real meat of the game comes from the sidequests and guild questlines.

I love Xenoblade, but I agree wholeheartedly that Pandora's Tower is a better game. Xenoblade kind of has the same effect House of Cards does. The score is so good, I overlook major flaws during my experience. If you don't like the music, you will see the flaws faster.
