I don't really drink alcohol, but I always wanted to come up with a mixed drink and call it the Nihilego. Considering what Nihilego actually does in Pokemon, it'd be a fitting name for a mixed drink.

Also, Ravens fan for life over here. I was born and raised in Baltimore, and even though I don't live there anymore (I moved to Delaware), I still follow them closely.

I am a tee totaler have been for a few years (never had a problem just stopped one day) however I used to be fond of a few drinks. As well as old regular of an Irish whiskey with water I was known to drink a whisky with martini rosso. I was also know to drink a cocktail that was two measures of Jonny Walker two measures of sambuca and lemonade to taste. It was a extreme love or hate for many.

@bluemage1989 - Sounds delicious. I’d probably go a bit lighter on the Sambuca, and maybe add a drizzle of honey. Johnny Red is about the highest level of scotch that I’ll still mix into a drink. Anything nicer, and I just drink it over ice.

@bimmy-lee the kind of bars I used to frequent sadly never kept honey otherwise I might have tried that. Getting it right for each person can be tricky some preferred two sambucas and more lemonade others the one sambuca and less lemonade. I introduced it to a few people some loved it others were almost being sick so definitely an acquired taste but one worth trying. Quite a strong mix was my way but caution required on a night out as it can sneak up on you.

Yes Jonny red would be the highest I'd go for mixing as never went much on the lower quality scotch. Black was nice over a bit of ice.

If you like your whiskey I'd definitely recommend the usual Irish go tos of Jamesons, Balladoyle and Bushmills. Irish whiskey often uses old sherry casks so there flavour differs heavily from the usual Scottish brands. Should you be inclined Bushmills Black Bush offers possibly the best flavour of any Irish whiskey best enjoyed with the smallest of small dashes of ice cold water (not ice in this case) although some might say that is heinous to use the ice cold water.

@bluemage1989 - It seems like anise flavor elicits extreme responses in people. I like it as a subtle flavor, but it can overpower food and drink quickly. I like flavors to blend together to become a single flavor, and I don’t really like when one jumps out above the rest. It takes a good bartender to really nail down a drink with Sambuca, but they’re really refreshing when they do.

That’s a fine list of Irish whiskies. Mighty fine. I acquired my taste for scotch via many years of Irish whiskey drinking. It took me way too long (a decade maybe) to realize Irish whiskey makes me 10 feet tall and 10 times stronger in my mind. When I realized this and started to drift to Scotch whiskey, the subtle, smokey flavors intrigued me, and I didn’t get the tough guy side effect.

I’m not a stickler about ice and water either. I take it on a case by case basis. Some spirits taste better neat, some over ice, some with a splash of cold water. It’s fun to experiment.

Did you use tea totaler as an expression, or do you enjoy tea?

Haha meant teetotaler (long day) unfortunately for medical reasons I had to give up alcohol completely other than a few units a year.

Anise is a hard flavour to work with as it does appeal to people in different ways outside of this one drink I never actually liked anise. A good bartender as you said can make two flavours become one although I think there's something to be said for a good mix that can give you a prominent flavour but also leave a different more lingering one. Mixing can be an art and I don't think these days people give enough thought to the work that goes into it.

Scotch there are some great Scotch whisky's out there a literal library to choose from and while it can be intimidating its nice to know there's always something new to find. Irish whiskey was definitely my go to for evenings out but for a good sipping whisky or after a meal scotch. Funny you should mention the ten foot tall effect I often found some Scotch would bring that out in me!!

I don't know if your a dark rum fan but here in winter after finishing work on the docks in the small hours we would often drink a hot toddy here thought we would use dark rum instead of spicy or whisky some would use various spices but for me a strong glug of dark rum some sugar and a touch of syrup with some hot water was one of my favourite way to drink rum.

Nowadays on the rare occasion I have a few drinks (normally Christmas) I will stick to beer or a dark rum and port mix. I don't know if your a beer man but I always have and will always be very fond of my favourite Kingfisher. Many write it off as a curry house beer and nothing more but to me it can't be beat.

Alcohol is worse than people think. You shouldn't drink much regardless of your age.

@bimmy-lee Personally, I'm not into whiskey/whisky at all anymore, but before Bacardi & Coke became my alcoholic beverage of choice, I did also drink Johnny Walker Red Label & Coke, and other than that, the occasional pure Bourbon on ice, such as Four Roses, which I sometimes also mixed with Coke.

Some other brands to look out for, if you don't know them yet, or haven't tried them yet, are Dimple, Famous Grouse, William Lawson's and Glenfiddich. They are all Scottish brands.

@bluemage1989 If you like spiced rum, then you might want to look into Stroh Rum. Or perhaps you know that brand already. I got acquainted with it during winter sports in Austria, and have really grown to like it.
You can drink it pure, mixed, and it is also frequently used as an ingredient in cakes and other pastries.

@BlueOcean Of course you shouldn't drink much, but that also counts for eating, snacking, gaming, working, and even for exercising/playing sports. Anything with "too much" in front of it, is bad.

But indulging in life's pleasures is never a bad thing. It's okay to have the occasional larger than necessary dinner/buffet, and it's also okay to have the occasional drink, to enjoy.

If we would only do all the things that are healthy and necessary, then life would ultimately become REALLY boring, and in my opinion highly unsatisfying. No drinks, no meat or no red meat, no candies, no pastries, etc. etc. I would possibly live a longer life, but I wouldn't enjoy a single day of it, if I had to constrain myself all the time. And just in case: no, I would never get used to that, since I'm a Burgundian, and I love to eat great food and drink tasteful drinks.

But I almost never overdo it. Only sparingly, which is probably only a handful of times a year, and mostly with food rather than with drinks. And I would bet that nine out of ten people do the same, such as during Christmas and the end of the year festivities.

They say the alcohol that doesn't make you feel sick is the most dangerous of all.

I'd worry about the sugar content too.

Don't overindulge.

@BlueOcean "doctors" also used to call coconut oil healthy, and only until politicians no longer paid them to say so did this change to it being a horrible thing. Just saying

@bluemage1989 - I’m sorry to hear of the health problems, but it sounds like you’ve identified and taken steps to remedy. Dark rum is really the only rum I enjoy. I like Coruba, it’s a Jamaican rum. Any dark will do though. I have a holiday party at my place every year, and I always have a dark rum and ingredients for Toddys and a bottle of cognac for hot, spiced cider. Something I look forward to all year. It’s such a treat.

I’m much more a beer drinker than spirits. I started a forum about it a while ago, but it seemed to fizzle out. Not much on wine either other than an occasional port. So, you mix dark rum and port? That sounds intriguing even if you don’t. While I like a mixed drink to be even, beer is where I enjoy flavor layering and foreground and background flavors. I’m kind of shocked to see you reference Kingfisher. Honestly, it’s one of my favorite drinkers. I bought a six pack one day about five years ago because I like beer in green bottles and it has a beautiful label. Instantly fell in love with it, drank it for years, and now I haven’t been able to find it anywhere for the last six months. Fantastic beer. Clean, smooth, and leaves you wanting another. If people don’t want it, I’ll gladly clean it up.

For all we have in common, we’re opposites on whiskies when it comes to feeling no pain. I’m convinced everyone has an alcohol that unleashes the mad dog.

@ThanosReXXX - Hello friend. I’ve had several of those labels at least. I don’t try as many new scotches as I’d like because a bottle can last a couple months around my place, even with two of us enjoying it. We’re also not going out for dinner and drinks regularly enough right now to try new varieties.

On indulgence, I’m right there with you. A good meal, stiff drink, fine chocolate, powerful coffee, whatever. I need these experiences to be okay. I over indulge alcohol from time to time, but a smart man once said, “If I don’t go crazy, I’m bound to lose my mind.” Someone I love died from drunk driving, and I’ve seen people I love sink into the gutter of dependence; but I’m at a point in my life where I believe my intake to be a healthy indulgence, if not always for the body, but for the mind.

@bimmy-lee I can definitely relate to that: sadly, I'm two for two with the alcohol-related tragedies in the family and friend sphere, had a drink & drive friend, and my uncle was an alcoholic, and currently, one of my favorite cousins also has a drinking problem, which is really making me sad.

But as for my own situation: I also have the same frame of mind (that you have), more or less, but I guess you may very well have already figured that one out all by yourself...

My own point of reference is simple: with the tragedies in mind, I most certainly never binge-drink, and only drink what would be considered too much on parties and festivities, which are sparse these days, since now that I'm older, the family has fallen apart somewhat, and contacts are rather irregular.

I also almost never drink during week days, unless it's a real hot summer's day, but then I just drink a light beer or a Radler, so nothing too hefty.

So, that leaves the weekend, or rather: Saturday, to indulge in some drinks. And you know which ones, namely Bacardi & Coke. I start after dinner & coffee, and I just relax and enjoy my drinks, and you've seen the glass, which is pretty big in real life, so usually, I don't drink more than three of them, and on occasion a fourth, but never more.

Not because I can't hold my liquor, but simply because I don't feel the need to drink any more, at which point I would just think it would be a waste of Bacardi, to drink more than that. I like a slight buzz, sometimes like you, to take my mind off of things, but I feel no need to get really drunk.

And I usually make a plate of some light snacks or tapas to go with the drinks, so three of these mug-sized glasses will easily last me the whole evening, and then some...
