Hello! Any gamecube fans here? So I am wanting to throw it back to my childhood and pick up some Nintendo action. I already have a GameCube, so I am wondering If I should just get games for it (expensive!!) or get a Wii U and get games for that? Games I will be buying include: Super Monkey Ball, Mario Party, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Pokemon, and Bomberman. I already have Mario Party 5, Smash Bros Melee, Pikmin 1 & 2, and Bomberman Jetters. I used to own Mario Kart Double Dash, Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon Wonderful Life and Bomberman Generation and so would love to get those back.. But should I go with the Wii U and get the newer versions of these games? Basically, should I get the expensive gamecube games or go with the newer Wii U and versions of the games I want? And can the Wii U play GameCube games? Which way will cost more or less? Which way would have better gaming? Anything else you can give me advice on would be awesome! Thanks!
@NatetheGreat: It depends on what you're looking for. GameCube games cannot be played on the Wii U, by the way. Anyway, the Wii U has its own Mario Kart, Smash Bros., and a new Pikmin for example, but there isn't an Animal Crossing or Bomberman game, there are other games, however, that aren't on the GameCube.
If you'd like to play your games in HD and if you'd like to try out different games, get a Wii U; If you're looking for nostalgia and want to play GameCube games again, obviously get a GameCube. I do think that the Wii U is a lot better for multiplayer, many games support some form of co-op. Nintendo Land, Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D World, Yoshi's Woolly World and many more allow for co-op and/or multiplayer. Get a Wii U if that's important as well.
Well I suppose I'll be the person who has little nostalgia towards the GC and I'll recommend the Wii U instead. You can play online in Smash and Mario Kart as well as with the Gamepad only and Pikmin 3 is way, way, way better than the GC Pikmin games. Pokken is a great Pokemon fighting game, though I still love Colosseum and XD. Apart from that, from the games you listed the GC beats the Wii U as Mario Party 10 is no match for the better MP games on the GC (5 is my favourite) and though the GC Animal Crossing is dated the only AC games you can play on the Wii U are the Wii City Folk and amiibo Festival, and I'd say that the former is a decent AC experience (New Leaf being the best in the series) and I haven't played amiibo Festival and will leave it at that as recommending that is the third worst sin one can commit in these parts behind saying you're willing to give Color Splash and Metroid Prime Federation Force the benefit of the doubt.
There's a plethora of games across the Wii and Wii U's library that can be played on a Wii U (as well as the VC) which would be great for kids, as a lot of the GC's best games were more mature themed (Resident Evil 4, Eternal Darkness, Metal Gear Solid/Resident Evil Remakes etc) whilst the library of the latter two is filled to the brim with casual & kiddie shovelware which some of those people above would have been more than happy to tell you if they weren't so eager to recommend the system that they have a lot of nostalgia towards.
The Wii U library of games is better IMO. And even the people who would argue otherwise would struggle to argue that the Gamecube Library is better than the Wii U + Wii libraries combined.

Dang.. Thanks for all the replies guys. So I did look up Wii U backwards comp for the GC and it seems like jailbreaking an iphone in a sense? But the fact you can backwards comp Wii games on it is pretty nice. I will have to think on this decision some more! Anyone know what a fair price for a used Wii U is or should I get the Mario Kart 8 bundle?
@NatetheGreat: You're from the US, right? Nintendo sells refurbished Wii U's on their online store I believe. $200 for the Deluxe set. You're guaranteed to get one that works and looks unblemished as well.
I haven't played all those games, so I can't comment on all of them; but from what I've played;
Smash Bros. Wii U is the better version, Melee is awesome as well, but the Wii U version has a lot more content to offer. Same with Mario Kart 8; Double Dash!! is a great game, but Mario Kart 8 is the better version in my opinion. Only downside is that Mario Kart 8 doesn't really have a traditional battle mode, I never played that mode a lot, so the lack of a proper battle mode didn't really bother me.
City Folk is basically the original Animal Crossing + more. There's little reason to go back to a previous AC game, as the newer games tend to include everything that was present in the previous entries anyway.
Lastly, Pikmin 3 is my personal favourite of the franchise, however, I like the first one a lot as well. The Wii has ports of both GameCube Pikmin games. Look up 'Pikmin New Play Control!' and 'Pikmin 2 New Play Control!'. There's no reason to get a GameCube for those games, as the Wii U can play all three officially.
In short, while some of the GameCube versions may offer a few different elements, I do think that in general the better version can be played on the Wii/Wii U. Mario Party is the only franchise that I think is definitely better on the GameCube, I'm not a big fan of the newer games.

Does the Wii U has Animal Crossing that isn't a party game? No. Does it have Mario Party games that allows the characters to be separate than together? No. Does it have a full 3D Mario game that allows the player to skip main objectives for secret objectives, with a moveable camera? No. Does have good Metroid games? No. Does it have Melee? Well......Melee sucks anyway. Does it have full 3rd party support with EA, Rockstar, Sega and etc? No. Does it have Sonic Boom Wii U? No. Does it Mario kart cast have unique characters that aren't metal or costume clones? No.
Yeah it would be good if people actually read the request and saw what it was asking instead of just saying what was better for them. For party games, the Wii/Wii U is just better, unless you're determined to have the best Mario Party games. Metroid, Rockstar (WTF did they publish on the GC anyway!?), EA are all irreverent, and again Super Mario 3D World's co-op is a much better option for kids than anything Sunshine offers.
Well one thing to also be aware is that Gamecube games are harder to get without blemishes and scratches. I recently got a game that didn't work because it was damaged. Wii U games are generally much easier to return or exchange since they are newer

Which is why I made the second point. Even if you want to argue that Wii U versions Mario Kart, Smash and Pikmin "aren't as good". Even if you want to argue that the HD remakes of those two Gamecube Zelda games somehow "don't count". Even if you want to whine about 3D World or the fact that there's no Metroid game. Or somehow completely ignore games like Splatoon, Bayonetta 2 and Super Mario Maker.
... for the OP's actual question? You still have to take into account the Wii's library. You are ignoring the Metroid Prime Trilogy which is available on the Wii U eShop. You discounted Skyward Sword and Super Mario Galaxy. You can argue that the Gamecube had a proper Animal Crossing but you forget that so did the Wii. Ignoring Wii BC and pretending it's still 2005 you could have a case, but for the actual question? I don't think you have much of an argument
This isn't a debate about whether the Wii U has a better library than the Gamecube did in its day. I personally think it does but that's not the discussion. The question is whether in 2016 you will get more out of a Wii U or a Gamecube. And for that question there is no discussion, the Wii U runs rings around the Gamecube. Especially if you take into account backwards compatibility.
Well this wasn't meant to spur a huge argument, but seems like overall the Wii U would be the best option for my case. Thank you to @Octane and everyone who actually addressed my request/questions. Could someone compare the other games for me though? To allow me to make a final decision.

Hmmm didn't consider just getting a Wii... Wii plays GC games right? Most of the games I want are for the Wii. But see then I'll be missing out on Pikmin 3, Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros and all the newer versions of game series. I'll also be missing out on the virtual console. Ugh haha. If i was to get a Wii U, would I need just the console or the handheld screen thing too? So refurbished Wii's are quite cheap. Could probably just go with that, play the GC games AND Wii games I want for now, and then upgrade to a Wii U once I get bored and more games come out! What's the difference between the regular Wii and the Wii New Motion Plus?
