ignorant and irrelevant? it seems perfectly logical to me. mario games are very unemotional and (obviously) shallow in terms of story. i dont think it would hurt if mario games could go more into detail on the backstories of the characters. seriously, for the past 30 years, all we know about mario and his relationship towards peach is... well, nothing. i think it would good for mario games to actually give us a reason for saving the princess.

The complaints against SMG2 and Limbo were legit. He's clearly not ignorant of either game because he played both and enjoyed both. However, to compare the two games is unnecessary. They are totally different and each do things miles better than the other.
I though that SMGs (first game) backstory involving Rosalina was very emotional. Still many people complained about it because "Mario shouldn't have such a serious story." SMG 2 had a very little story, and suddenly people started to complain about that. Jesus... I guess you just can't please everyone.

Agreed. I don't get why they keep comparing apples to flamingos, other than to incite more pointless arguments.

Oh man, I certainly do. I don't want to have to sit through cut scenes between goomba-stomping, especially when the cut scenes--no matter what they say--can't do anything to disguise the fact that we're doing more goomba-stomping.
The core Mario series, in my opinion, continues to succeed because of its comparative simplicity. Nobody goes in expecting some sprawling tale of emotional depth, and so nobody's disappointed when there is none.
A few of the core Mario games (such as Sunshine) do have cut scenes, but they're infrequent (...I wish they were even more infrequent, to be honest) and don't attempt to drag us through back-stories for our main characters. Relationships (both positive and negative) in the Mushroom Kingdom are the very definition of superficial, and that's just fine. Start treating them as anything deeper than that and it automatically rings false, especially at this late date.
Leave that sappy "O Timpani, my mighty heart is breaking" crap to Paper Mario plzz.
I would like more voice acting like in "Super Mario Sunshine"
But keep Mario from saying too much. but he dose talk more in Mario Kart games then he do in others.
And when it comes to gameplay, I felt that this game play it safe, as it had too meny boring things to fight, and Bosses were too easy.
Bower was harder to Fight in SMG1, and he had an Epic Theme too. But I was hopeing for a Classic remake Fight with Bowser "Mario64 Style"
And one more thing: A Better Muiti-player and DLC would had been great too,

any kind of deep story is what the Mario RPG series-es are for, whether it's SMRPG, Paper Mario, or Mario & Luigi. In terms of 2D/3D platformers, all I want is more levels to get through.
to make an example of serious story attempting to enter the Mario platformer universe, the Rosalina story felt horribly tacked onto SMG. It just didn't belong there at all IMO... ugh, too sappy and annoying. I would've understood it if it'd been one of the RPG titles, and i may have even found it quite touching in that context, but as a platformer I just wanted her to shut up and get outta my face -- Mario already has Toadstool, he doesn't need another chick to save. i didn't care where she came from or why she was on the ship, i just wanted to play more levels and find more stars. :3

I agree with pretty much everything TBD and CB are saying. I understand where this article is coming from, but it just doesn't work in the context of Mario. Also, aside from both being platformers, the games are nothing alike.

Meh. Another pointless article on the internet that people are getting angry about. While he does speak about legitimate complaints of both games, those problems are just what happens when you try to make a specific game, which is what the creators were aiming for.

The Super Mario series is simple. plain. fun. and Galaxy 2 is the pinnacle in that series. It's probably the most fun I've ever had in a video game. I don't see any problem with that. Limbo can be Limbo, but Mario is Mario, and I don't want anyone to mess with what Mario is.

Ignorant and irrelevant? Yes. Mario's atmosphere is so cheery and filled with joy I don't how people can see it as shallow. It's never been shallow it's always been fulll of life. Just play it and look for it. If your looking for spiders crawling on the mountains you may be disapointed but neither does Limbo unless your talking about the big one at the beginning of the game of course. Galaxy 2 is very emotional in every way. Very moody in Boser's Castle and very moody in the very first Galaxy where Yoshi is.
i dont think it would hurt if mario games could go more into detail on the backstories It's Mario dude... What do you want? A Metal Gear Solid quality storyline where Luigi is actually made up of Mario's genetics to actually kill Mario because DK is actually a secret scientist in the plains of Africa and towards the end of the assigned Luigi, he gets hit on the head and forgets everything, and is thus scared of everything? No. (But yes I just pulled that out my you know where.)
