Yeah, that was the objective of this thread. By the way, Ive been reading 1984. And the only think I can think of now is Obamacare.
Obama? Sigh I don't want to say much about this guy because this forum doesn't have enough space for my thoughts on our president. Politics give me a headache anyway.

Just tell me if they are positive or negative. That gives me a pretty good idea.
Mostly negative, but some of it's not his fault. One big problem I have is the media's treatment of Obama. Everything he does is a good thing, even if it's something Bush did. Obama is just over-rated in my opinion, no offense to Obama supporters.
I also mean no offense. What I meant is how the govt. wants to take over healthcare and how it relates to the govt. controling everything in 1984 the book

Ah! More politics! Why can't we discuss something more intelligent like our favorite brand of soda, or coke if you're from the south

I'm from Tennessee, but I go to school in Mississippi. Down here, tea is either sweet or unsweet, macaroni and cheese is a vegetable, and we don't (usually) say "pop", we say "coke", even if it's pepsi I really like the south for its approach towards everything, if that makes any sense

As a matter of fact, I've never been north of Tennessee! I've been to New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. Last time I was in Texas, I was enjoying a wonderful bowl game against a Texas college team!

I read 1984 whilst in the States earlier this year, and I have to be honest it resonated more with Britain than the US, for me at least. Although, perhaps that's because I'm British... anyway, fantastic book - just look at how much of its parlance and ideology has passed into everyday speak. I'm not just talking about Big Brother and Room 101 - the Thought Police, doublethink, newspeak, Ingsoc... from a literary and linguistic point of view, it's fascinating.
Today is my niece's fourth birthday bless 'er, she's so awesome! I shouldn't tell you this but I lost a whole two hours in town yesterday playing with looking at kids toys and stuff, it was so much fun.
Back on topic ish, I haven't read 1984 yet as my mother forced me to watch the movie when I was about 10/11, needless to say it freaked me out lots and I couldn't watch it again for years. I should read the book now I'm old enough to appreciate it. And will.

Well, actually I don't think 1948 was an attack on government run health care or government interventions in general. It's more of an attack on Fascism and communism. George Orwell himself was actually a dedicated leftist supporter of the Labour Party and his books have often been misinterpreted as an attack on socialism of which he was a supporter. 1948 was written as a critique on ideologies that claimed to liberate the masses but turned against them instead such as what happened with Stalin and Hitler. He just wanted to point out that liberating or protecting the people should always be done in a democratic way and not with violent coup d' etats or revolutions like in Russia or use democracy to create dictatorship like in Germany.
But most of all it teaches that every person should think for him- or herself and not let the government think for you and abuse terms like liberalism, socialism, freedom and democracy to do opposite like in doublethink.

I'm not really a fan of the south. Not for its politics (although I do find myself at odds with the conservative climate there) but I love cold winters. What the south considers a cold winter just can't cut it for me.
"The government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion."

Yeah, I bet you would be at odds. In Tennessee there are cold days sometimes where the temperature literally drops. I don't know much about long, cold winters, but I'm also not a huge fan of the freakin' hot summers here.

I currently live in Texas, but I used to live in Mississippi and Missouri. In fact, I was born in Mississippi. Long live the South!
I get the feeling that this thread is gonna jump from one topic to another topic that had little to do with the first. Sounds like me talking for two minutes straight
