Topic: Funniest film of all time?

I was recently asked by a friend what I felt the funniest film of all time was. I took a moment to think, and answered The Big Lebowski, but I knew that this answer didn't satisfy me.

Later on I realized that the CORRECT answer would have been This is Spinal Tap.

Hovering around third place would probably be Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

But I'm curious about the choices other people would make. Remember...this isn't "best comedy." The movie doesn't have to be good at ALL. The plot can be awful, the acting can be atrocious...it just has to be funny. What are your choices for the out-and-out funniest films?

Spaceballs. I've never seen funnier.

Plain old gamer :)

I'm not a huge Spaceballs fan, but you did remind me of another prime contender: Blazing Saddles!

Hard to say... Comedies tend to grow old quicker than other movies, at least for me. I'll say The Ten, though perhaps only because I have already watched Holy Grail, Spaceballs, and Wet Hot American Summer to death.

I really like Annie Hall - I just think it's a fantastically warm and very charming film. It's always one that springs to mind when I think of funny films.

I also really like Young Frankenstein, the Princess Bride, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and a really, really rubbish film called Derailed starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, where the train sequences are done with a toy train. It's hilarious because it's so unremittingly poor. The others are ace though.

I agree with the sentiment that the typical classic ones I might list have grown old and irritating due to watching them too much or being too saturated with lame references to them.

As for recent-ish films, I found I Heart Huckabees to be hilarious.

The Room.

The first time I watched it, I laughed once, maybe twice.

The next day, after I knew what was coming, I laughed throughout almost the whole thing. Tommy Wiseau is so unbelievably entertaining.

I'd have to say Tropic Thunder Robert Downey Jr. is hilarious in it!

@irken004: i really hated Tropic Thunder for some reason, lol. to each his own, i guess. :3

anyway, as for funniest... Robin Hood: Men in Tights is good stuff, i've still got most of that movie's dialogue memorized. As for newer films, Kung Fu Hustle is freaking hilarious.

Hilarious movie. So epic As for the "older" films, I'd say SpaceBalls as well. Monty Python I'd most rememer for their skits and such rather then the holy grail, but a hilarious movie non-the-less.

EDIT: Also, I second that Robin Hood: MiT is funny as hell.

Hot Rod (starring Andy Samberg, Danny Mcbride, Bill Hader and Jorma Taccone) is an epic movie too.

@Shadx: omg, 'hot rod'... you totally just reminded me of Super Troopers! love that movie, but you gotta catch it uncut... actually, most of these movies you've gotta see uncut to fully appreciate them. movies edited for TV lose like half their funny.

My friend keeps telling me to watch that. He says it's kinda like Reno 911 which I love. Guess I'll have to next time I see him.

Yeah, any movie or tv show that gets cut for whatever reason usually loses alot of the best stuff.

...aaaaand if you like Reno 911 (or Wet Hot American Summer) you'll love The State, which was an EXCELLENT sketch comedy show the same crew did in the mid 90s. Coming to DVD next month.

Seriously.

Get it.

It's incredible.

You'd also of course like The Ten if you like Reno 911 / Wet Hot American Summer since it's mostly from the same group of people. I will certainly be getting the State DVD.
