@antdickens Trying to sell an idea to a seasoned sales & marketing professional. Got to get up out of bed a little sooner than that to persuade me, son...

I don't count payments per day, I only count what I actually have to pay in a year. What that reminds me of, is like how employers/contractors always tell you what they will pay you per month: I couldn't care less about any gross income, I need to know what is actually going to be deposited on my account. Can't pay the bills from a gross income, now can we?

As for those Firefox add-on screenshots, here you go:

@ThanosReXXX Okay, I will give it a shot. I just noticed that my topic history was wiped out again and even though I am signed into the website, under the Topic History it said that I needed to sign in again. But now that I have gone into a few forums it is populated again only with my very recent history. It does that all the time.

@Hikingguy Yeah, I'd be curious to get to the bottom of the issue you are having... if you're not seeing your avatar top right then you no doubt have a Javascript error - which the screenshot will help me understand.

As for the topic history on the right-hand panel, yeah, that is only for your current visit/session on the website and therefore data won't be kept between visits.

@antdickens I have no idea how much the ads generate per person, but if it's any similar to YouTube, most say that €1/$1 a month on Patreon generates more revenue than having one user watch a bunch of ads every day for a month.

Octane

antdickens

@Octane it's a scale thing. If 1% of users signed up to a paid version of the site, even at a $2/month it would probably earn more than we do currently. That said, convincing 1 in 100 people to pay is a very tall order...

@antdickens I see. I was more thinking along the lines of, if I paid a small fee, it would be an improvement over me watching ads. Let's say you earn €0.50 per user per month, I gladly pay the €0.50 for an ad free version. I'm just thinking that if I was paying €3 for every website I visit every day, it would all add up rather quickly!

Relying completely on users signing up for a paid version seems a difficult task indeed. But an ad model for ''free'' combined with paid version without ads seems like a good middle ground. Admittedly, I have little knowledge about how advertising works behind the screens so to speak!

Octane

antdickens

@Octane yeah of course, it would always be a combined model. Thing is, if you only paid €0.50 and we know not many people do it, the amount of time/effort to setup the system probably isn't worth it. Especially as there would be a transaction fee too, and if in the UK we'd have to charge 20% VAT too. You might end up only getting about €0.25 or less...

I think you'd only do it for sites that you a) want to support and b) really don't want ads. So it wouldn't be for LOTS of sites.

I believe the barriers at the moment are an issue too, asking someone to give their payment info etc is always an ask (hell, even asking people to create an account is often too much). I think when the big browser vendors (eg, Google) have something built into the browser to subscribe to a website with a single click (using your Google wallet for example) we'll see a big shift. Apparently, all this is in the works as we speak.

@Hikingguy That part also happens to me, about the forum topic history. That's normal. It's not going to remember a forum topic that you were in last year, and that also wouldn't make any sense. If you want to know which topics you've been in or have commented on, go to your own profile, and then switch from the Profile tab to the one that says "Posts", and you will see your entire forum conversation history there if you want to re-read or re-visit older topics.

Not having an avatar picture in the top right corner of the home page screen (or any screen for that matter) is another issue entirely, so you should definitely make a couple of screen shots, and then give ant a heads up, so he can help you out with it. Did wonders for me, so it's clear he definitely knows his stuff.

@antdickens No offense, but I think you are over-thinking some of these things. Your belief is almost putting thoughts in other people's heads. Me, I would gladly pay €1 a month for an ad free site, and I would also be willing to support the site regardless, meaning I would still be okay with a €1 fee per month if you don't do anything to make the site ad free, and then I'll simply keep using my ad blockers, but on the other hand, I would still be supporting you guys anyways.

So, like I said yesterday, it's not even about making the site ad free per se. It's about asking for/getting sponsorship regardless of that.

And the only barrier that there is, is the one you're making yourself. I'll take my job as an example: in sales, I expect to get around 60 to 80 no's before I get to a yes, and that doesn't bother or faze me at ALL. It's a numbers game and on average, I get 5 yes'es out of those 80 no's. I'm not bothered by the no's because I know and understand that I need to work through them to get to the people saying yes. It's just a check list that I have to complete, so to speak.

I don't know how many members Nintendo Life and the other sites you manage have, but let's just say that out of every 60 members, one or two decide to sponsor you with the equivalent of a euro per month. That could rapidly become quite the sum, and remember: now they're not paying at ALL, and advertising revenue is highly overrated anyways, especially if you don't want to scare off any users by over-populating your websites with them. The user experience is the most important, in that respect.

A Dutch saying says 'You've already got the no, but you can still get a yes", which simply means that if you DON'T ask, you'll definitely never get a yes. You will basically never know, until you ask, so why not make a poll or whatever, and see what comes out of it? I'm betting you might just be pleasantly surprised...

As for the actual payments: I'd say get the answers you need first, and by that time, you can start figuring out what to use to safe guard people's details or allow them to anonymously donate, which by the way is also an option...

Me, I'd simply used PayPal...

Sorry for not responding sooner, my power went out shortly after my last post. I went outside and saw a huge lightning strike very close to me. It was close enough that it made me jump and then all power was gone.

Maybe what I am experiencing is normal. My avatar is at the top of the screen at all times. I am typically always just signed in. I do not have to think about it very much.

My issues has always been with the Topic History. Who knows, maybe it is doing exactly what it is suppose to do, but it seems like I get a very short amount of time with my Topic History before it blanks out.
I do not need a year's worth of history, but an hour would be nice.
It really is not that big of a deal. I must have understood the topic wrong. Just forget I said anything.
But thanks for telling me how to post an image to that website. That will be useful.

@Hikingguy Haha, fooled us all then...

But one question still remains: you said you didn't get any notifications of people replying to you, and that you had to do it all manually:

Hikingguy wrote:

@ThanosReXXX I do not see notifications. I keep checking back, especially if I am in a conversation. Like for example, I did not get any notification for this post, but I saw you posted something so I looked. But my reply buttons are there. It is like I am half signed in and half not. It was strange, but you are correct, I do have to search for any topics manually if they are not on the the main page.

And that is strange, because if everything is working as it should, that should be clearly visible in the top right corner normally, signified by a red circle with a number in it:
Untitled
Clicking on that, will show you the message(s), and clicking on a message, will take you to that topic immediately.

If that isn't the case on your computer, then there's still something that isn't working quite right on your end.

@ThanosReXXX So I must have really misunderstood the topic. I guess I was referring completely to the Topic History not retaining any history for me.
Because between my last post and this post, my Topic History has already cleared out. Now under the Topic History it again says
"Your recently viewed topics will appear here. Login or Sign Up"

So when I said half signed in and half not, what I meant was, I am 100% signed into the website, but for some reason it always tells me that I am not signed in to keep any Topic History. I always thought that was strange. And since I have no history, if the topic is no longer on the main page, I have to manually find it. I guess that is what I was referring to.

But historically for Forums I always just check back. I have no good reason that I do it this way, but that is the way I have always handle it. I guess I do it different then when I post in an article. Because in an article I never really expect anyone to respond to my stupid comments lol

@Hikingguy The topic was that due to changes made to the site, people like me found that although they were logged in on the main site, the top right image still gave that stupid white smiley that said Login or Sign Up, fooling people into thinking that they couldn't log in or weren't logged in. Luckily, that annoying problem is all fixed now. Your confusion probably stems from the title of the topic, but the Login problem was the same across the site, so it wasn't specifically tied to the forum.

But on with the rest: do you get notifications, like in the picture I posted in the previous comment, or not? Any and ALL notifications should be found if you click on that red circle with the white number in it, both comments/replies AND forum conversations, so there really is no need to hunt or browse through forum topics manually at all.

Provided it all works like it should on your end, obviously. And the forum history thing works the same for everyone. That's why it also explicitly says: your RECENTLY viewed topics will appear here.

And it never remembers more than a couple, unless you've visited a lot in the space of a day, in which case, the list will be a little longer, but once you close the browser, or turn off your computer and go to the site again afterwards, all that should be gone. It's simply how it works. Have to agree about the whole Login or Sign Up thing to view topics on forum pages; that's kind of misleading.

Perhaps @antdickens can shed some light on that part, because it certainly doesn't make any sense if you're already logged in, and it also happens to me, so it's not just you and I actually always wondered about that myself, so let's wait and see what he has to say about it.

@ThanosReXXX All is good. I looked and I saw exactly what you were talking about. I found your post and everything.
I guess I just really misunderstood the forum topic and I did not realize that when someone posted a reply to me on the forum that it also notified me via the red dot above. I sometimes just let that number get really big and then just delete them in one fell swoop. I will pay more attention in the future.
This conversation also reminded me that I get emails. And sometimes if I am not just checking for a reply, I would also be reminded by an email. I forgot about that. I am sure the way I do it is about the least efficient way possible. But it is the way it is.

Thanks!

@Hikingguy Haha, don't mention it, man. No trouble at all.

Yeah, most of us get the emails as well, unless you unchecked that option in your profile. The thing for me is that I've set up a special email account for website memberships and so on, that doesn't have my real name, simply because I am my own company, and I like to keep my private life private, for multiple reasons. And that second inbox is the one I check the least, but there's no need for it either, since I check all replies here on the site.

Which by the way does mean that I sometimes have to erase/mark as read a heck of a lot of emails once every while when I actually DO visit that other email address...
