I think the same. Football is such an out of place name for a sport like American football, or as I call it, American Rugby. America really has caused quite a mess trying to steal the name away and calling football soccer.
Which sport deserves the title? Everywhere-else-football. (Hey, I kinda like that...No more using the word "soccer" for me!) Good luck getting America to change it, though. If there ever was a footballer vs. footballer fight, I'm putting my money on us Americans. Our linebackers would tear you guys apart!

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

That would be impossible because the sports/rules are way too different and senselessly pushing eachother is something everywhere-else-football players aren't stupid enough to do. Not everyone like jumping on men and breaking their bones.

Pretty much every sport is about footwork, so you really can't say you barely use your feet, but that's just being technical. I don't see how anyone could say American football "deserves" the name, but regardless, that is its name. It can most readily be compared to rugby, which non-Americans (non-US citizens, that is) often conveniently forget is also technically a type of football sport, despite mostly carrying the ball with their hands (I know next to nothing about rugby, so correct me if I'm wrong).
It's confusing that we refer to it simply as "football" instead of something more specific like "gridiron football," though. As someone who dislikes gridiron football and watches a lot of international soccer matches, I find myself referring to association football as simply "football," which unfortunatedly causes considerable confusion.

@StarWolf: I didn't mean in a everywhere-else-game-of-football, I just meant in a fight. A big footbrawl, if you will.
Wow, was that awful...

Association football, more commonly known as football, and also as soccer, can be traced to traditional football games played formerly in Europe, particularly medieval England. The modern game of association football originated with the formation of the The Football Association (FA) in England in 1863.

Some people say association football originated in China. I don't think it's actually known. The game is too straightforward and obvious to lay claim to.
The origin of professional football can be traced back to 1892, with William "Pudge" Heffelfinger's $500 contract to play in a game for the Allegheny Athletic Association against the Pittsburgh Athletic Club. The first Professional "league" was the Ohio League, formed in 1903, and the first Professional Football championship game was between the Buffalo Prospects and the Canton Bulldogs in 1919
The ancient Mayan's (around 2000-4000 years ago) had a version of football where the losers were sacrificed to the gods.Makes losing the european cup seem not so bad.I reckon cavemen used to knock a boars head around a bit too. It's a sport that's built into us as humans/monkeys. Proper football that is,not the american version.
Heh, if that is the same sport I am thinking of, you do kick a ball with your foot, but it's not the same. I believe you're thinking of that net sport more similar to footbag than football. I could be wrong though.
The mayan game had little hoops that you had to get the ball in,they even had a proper rubber bouncy ball (clever dudes them Mayan's) and if you think about it a lot of ball sports involve throwing/kicking a ball into a net/hoop.They are all variations on the same theme so as you said it would be impossible to say when and where it originated.Thank god it did though, thats what I say
