As someone who has actually played the games, there's more to it than what first observations lead you to believe.
But really, I don't feel like trying to dragging the thread out with pointlessly bickering on a subject that you've already made your mind up on.

It just seems to me like they're catering to kids only and that also goes well with the fact that most people who play Kingdom Hearts is of young age.

What? Setzer is awesome. Who doesn't remember him?

I didn't remember him, and I've played up to the World of Ruin several times, and saw the rest on a marathon stream. Wasn't he just the guy you get the airship from? EDIT: Wait, he was playable? Jesus, was FF6 so unmemorable I don't even remember all the playable characters?...actually, yes, yes it was. Okay.

I forgot that you're that one guy that doesn't like FF6.

I also forget that you're the reg whose only been here a year and therefore haven't seen me dis that game a thousand times by now...sorry for the slip up. I'll be sure to rail on it harder so you don't forget again.

^No. Kingdom Hearts is about a bunch of original characters going through a series of obtuse events that occasionally involves Disney characters sometimes. I'm 5 hours into my replay of KH2 and I have yet to see a single Disney character. In fact, I've seen more obscure Final Fantasy characters than Disney characters. (Setzer?! Who the hell would remember him?!)

That doesn't change the fact that the game is trying to appeal more to children with the inclusion of Disney characters.

So is Harvel Birdman okay for kids because it has Hanna Barbera characters?

Kingdom Hearts is pretty clearly intended for teenagers. A niche group of teenagers, but definitely teenagers.

Which I guess does make the inclusion of Setzer questionable. Or any pre-FFVII character, for that matter. Are NES/SNES FF characters even culturally relevant anymore? Maybe FFIV, as they're everywhere and something of company mascots.

Like @SpookyMeths says, KH seems to be aimed at teens.

The Disney movies kids these days know are stuff like Cars, Frozen, Tangled, Wreck it Ralph, Wall-E, UP, etc., and none of those series have been represented in KH.

So far, KH has mainly tapped into movies of the 90's (or earlier), such as Aladdin, Lion King, Little Mermaid, Mulan, Sleeping Beauty, etc., which probably appeal more as a nostalgic pull for teens/older audiences, than they appeal to younger audiences (and on the off chance they adopt something from the past 10 years, it's been action stuff like Pirates of the Caribbean & Tron Legacy).

I will say Frozen has a good chance of making it into KHIII, but that's probably more to do with how popular it's been with audiences of all ages.

Updated the title, seeing as how Kingdom Hearts heavy the discussion has been.

No. The humor is very much adult humor.

I like the first seven FF games, and FFIX. I didn't like VIII, X, or XII, and XIII just doesn't appeal to me. Not including XI or XIV since they're MMOs, but I did get a free trial for XIV recently. FFVI is by far my favorite. I don't have many problems with it at all. In fact, it's my favorite traditional JRPG.

Also, I've played Kingdom Hearts ever since the first game released in North America, and I personally prefer it over FF. It's been going slightly downhill since the first game in my opinion, but it's still a lot of fun (My username should also make it obvious that I'm a fan).

As for FF spin-offs, I play Dissidia and Theatrhythm. Not much else, though. I want to get into the Chocobo Dungeon games, but other games have taken a higher priority.

Sorry about that. :-/

Not a problem. It is technically a FF spinoff, so it's not off topic

I don't know but once Final Fantasy games went to 3D with FF 7 I just didn't enjoy them anymore. My favorite has always been Final Fantasy VI followed closely by FF IV (II on the SNES). The first Final Fantasy on the NES has always had a special in my heart as well since it was the first RPG game I really got into and beat all by myself. I tried Dragon Warrior before that (Thank you Nintendo Power for a free copy) but I just couldn't get into it,

Anyway I played 7 nearly got to the end of it before I got bored of it and moved on. The story and characters just didn't appeal to me like the story and characters in VI. I kinda wish they would make an old school 2D style FF game again just for giggles on the 3DS or at least release the older games on the VC. Ah well at least I have them on GBA.

Did you stop at VII? Because IX was pretty much a love letter to the SNES era. Itou (FFVI) came back to direct, Amano (FFI-VI) came back to do the art, and Sakaguchi returned to writing. Then XII was made by the creative team behind Ogre Battle, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Vagrant Story. Also very different from the other 3D FF games.

I agree that the series changed for the worse after the SNES era, and I have some theories on why that is, but IV, V, VI, IX, and XII are my sure top 5.

On the topic of 2D VS 3D (and this goes for RPGs in general), I find it much more likely I'll actually finish them if they're 3D, rather than 2D.

As for 2D FF games, I never beat the GBA games I played (I, II, & IV), though I did beat KH:CoM (though not Riku's story).

As for 3D FF games, I've beaten X, Crystal Bearers, and the rest of the KH games I've played (I, II, 365/8 Days, Re:Coded, 3D). The only one I didn't beat was XII, and that had more to do with me getting distracted by the Wii & 360 we got later in the year. Heck, I'm currently retrying IV on Android (which is the DS version), and I find myself enjoying it more than I did in 2D.

I played VIII and after about six hours into that game I was done with the series. By the time IX came out the previous two games had left such a bad taste in my mouth so to speak that I didn't even care about that one. Also when that game came out I no longer had a Playstation (a friend of mine broke it by accident) so I never played it. I have seen a few of the PS2 ones but they didn't do anything for me.

FF9 is probably one of the best high-fantasy RPGs ever made. Except for the last third of the game.
It's far closer to FF4 than FF7 or FF8. Play it!

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

I remember my friend telling me a bit about FF IX when it came out saying stuff like oh it goes back to the old FF games but like I said I didn't have a PS at the time and the last two games I didn't like so I just ignored him. I might have to check this one out some day now.

A bit of a FFIV update. Beat Baigan & Cagnazzo and now have an airship! I remember getting stuck here (particularly the Baigan fight) on the GBA version for awhile, so I'm a bit pleased that I beat both on my first try this time.

Time for another FFIV update. Just beat the third archfiend (her name was Baraccia, I think?). Rescued Rosa & Kain, who are back in my party (at the expense of Tellah...).

One thing I like that I may not have appreciated as much when I played it back on GBA, is that your party is ever evolving (moreso than almost any other RPG I've played). You have new characters added, old friends leaving..,, and then reuniting later on in the adventure. Almost after every dungeon there's some sort of shakeup, and not only does it expose you to all sorts of different personalities, but it really causes you to re-think your battle strategy after every switch up.

@ RR529 yeah that may be what I liked most about FFIV too, the revolving roster. It really kept things fresh and interesting. Getting characters back, or even just seeing characters again, after a long time of no updates like Rydia (spoilers on a 24 year old game lol) was really cool.
