Post about your favorite fighting games, your first experiences with Fighting games, and the like.
My first fighting game was probably Clayfighters. I had a lot of fun with it playing with my bro, although it was obviously broken. After that I played Mortal Kombat, which pretty much turned me off fighting games for years...yeah, it was that bad.
It wasn't until I heard about Samurai Shodown that I ever expressed any interest in the genre again, and just my luck, that summer I went to a hotel that happened to have a surprising classic: The King of Fighters '94. While the game was fun, and I did spend about half my snack money on it, it seemed that it was way too difficult to get into for the uninitiated. But it did give me the taste I need to begin pursuing a good entry-level game in the genre. I started with the obvious choice - Soul Calibur II for the GCN, which I found on sale at a rental store. My brother and I played the hell out of it, but it seemed that no matter how much I practiced, I never really seemed to get any better. It was, as many people have mentioned, a button-masher, and in the end, I yearned for something more.
On a whim, I decided to spend the points I had gotten for F-Zero X on Super Street Fighter II, and that's where things finally started turning around. I was hooked: I played it for hours, either in the practice mode or in the singleplayer, trying to conquer my next foe. It was amazingly fun and accessible, yet incredibly intricate, I couldn't believe a game would ever be this much fun! I never got to the point where I mastered every character, or any character for that matter, but the lessons it taught me were invaluable. SFII was my key to the entire Fighting genre, and I'll never forget it.
Afterwards, I went on to play tons of other fighting games, due in large part to MAME. I played all the best games, from the rest of the Street Fighter series, to KOF, Samurai Shodown, Darkstalkers, the VS. Series, and so much more. I think I had almost a hundred different roms at one point. Of course, I don't play any of them anymore, since I vowed to stop pirating such fantastic games. KOF was the one that Hooked me the most, and it's still one of my favorite series, even more than Street Fighter. Yet so far, I only have two games that aren't on MAME, and I never really play any of them, since one of them has a really cheap and annoying boss, while the other I played so much on MAME that I can't quite get into it anymore.(plus, it's on the 360, which I don't have access to). I definitely plan on changing that attitude soon, though.
Anyways, enough about me, lets here your story. Or just post about your faves, what good ones are coming out, etc.
I remember as a kid loving Mortal Kombat so much that I read about half of the Mortal Kombat paperback book that was out .(about 300 pages, with small text) Would have finshed the book to but without action for aleast 20 or so pages I had to let it go..... would love for a good fight game to drop on dsiware though, as I havent played one in years(a good one aleast) @mac, never got into clayfighter because none of the charcters seemed as ″cool″is MK
I've played some fighters in my day(starting with Street Fighter 2), and I'd have to disagree with the idea that Soul Calibur 2 is a button-masher. Perhaps you can play any fighting game casually and be slayed by someone mashing buttons, but I actually have been playing that one again a lot lately, and it feels like there is still a lot of strategy to master. Often it seems like the ones that are most guilty of being button mashers are in two dimensions(Mortal Kombat) since there are fewer ways to avoid attacks, but in the Soul series of games you can move around in all directions, block and guard impact so the only way that you'd get mashed on is if you are unexperienced. Granted, there's a lot more to memorize as far as the characters' move sets and that makes real mastery of multiple characters difficult, but the end result feels more rewarding. My real criticism of that game is that the characters could be better balanced, but that is a problem that occurs in pretty much every game in the genre. I really need to delve into some of the older 2D fighters, I've never played a KoF game and I'd like to see what the hype is about.
I know now how you're supposed to play it, but I didn't back then. I was just too tired to mention that.
And if you have a PS2 or Xbox 360, get KOF '98: Ultimate Match. It's fantastic, has all the fighters that was missing from the Neo Geo version, plus the best gameplay the series has ever had, IMO.
What is the difference other than more characters between SF4 and SSF4? I don't have SF4, so I might get SSF4.
According to the site, Super Street Fighter 4 will have new online modes, a new challenge mode, more stages, the return of bonus stages, and of course more fighters and new moves for older fighters. They're also rebalancing the gameplay from the last one, so it should be a little more fair.
I think I started off my fightinggaming with the AMIGA port of Mortal Kombat, or Best of the Best for SNES. Not the best games ever, but at least they showed me the adrenaline rushes of a one on one fighter.
My first own figtinggame was Supter Street Fighter II for SNES, and I still love that one. Intuitive controls and a great set of characters. My favourite fighters apart from that one are the Hilarous Marvel vs Capcom, Soul Calibur 3 and Street Fighter 3: Third.
I´ve just started to play TvsC, see you online when I´ve refined my skills!
Man, I have some awesome memories of fighting games and its crazy that all of my faves are Capcom classics, the character designs in these games are so rich, how cud u not fall in love?:
Rival Schools (I wish they'd do a next gen revival similar to TvC it rocked so much!)
Tech Romancer
Street Fighter Alpha/2/3
Marvel Vs Capcom
Tatsunoko Vs Capcom (which im addicted to rite nw, its THAT gud!)
I would play all of these rite now til my fingers bleed, oh sweet memories!
I just got Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and am enjoying it, the graphics are amazing. It's difficult though, I can pull off all the moves and stuff but knowing when to do what is very tricky indeed. I got to the final boss (on easy) but can't beat him. Any tips would be nice
Hmm, Mickeymac's "So, who else here likes fighting games?" thread has disappeared. I can't find it anywhere and I wanted to revive it. Fortunately I found this wrinkly, ancient thread instead, so... /me uses Gill's Resurrection
I was browsing game music on Youtube and remembered how awesome the King of Fighters music from the older games was. Check these out!
