My absolute favourite would be Watership Down, with the Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy at a very close second.

of Mice and Men is a very good book, I also enjoyed The Outsiders and Rumble Fish.

A: Two, one to hold the light bulb, the other to rotate the universe.

My favorite would probably The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy trilogy. They're just brilliantly written and keep the story going at a fast pace.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, would you kindly?

I'm going to be reading Moby Dick soon, also. Any opinions on it?

On second thought, let's not go to Camelot. 'Tis a very silly place.

KarrotMan

I'm reading another Stephen King novel The Tommyknockers, and halfway through, its alright. I'm also reading Left Behind, a story of a man who faces the rapture and the end of the world while finding his family.

I always suggest books by Jasper Fforde. Any fans of sci-fi, fantasy, alternate history, or a general love of books would probably like his "Thursday Next" series. The books are full of references and little things to pick up on, but even without getting the added humor of character names and the like, the books are extremely entertaining and imaginative. The first book in that series is called "The Eyre Affair" (I believe 5 books are out so far). He has two other series, and I just read his newest, "Shades of Grey," and again would highly recommend that (the subject matter is a little darker than the Thursday Next series, but it was a terrific read)

I just got started on A Game of Thrones this morning, which a friend has assured me will redeem the epic fantasy genre in my eyes when I'm done with it. It's off to a good start at least after the first chapter. But it'll take a lot to make me think much of this kind of fantasy. I think my memories of Shannara are ruined, and I always thought Lord of the Rings terribly dull and poorly paced.

It's the poorest epic fantasy series I've read. Still readable, I'm halfway through Clash of Kings, but it's riddled with juvenile sections, completely unnecessary within the context of the book, and all the characters are so unlikable that it's hard to feel any sympathy. It's also too big. Martin has so many plot strands going on that he stuggles to bring any of them to any kind of conclusion.

Robin Hobb's Assassin's Apprentice is a far superior contempary fantasy novel, if you haven't read it yet. Or Usula Le Guin's Earthsea trillogy.

As for me, I'm reading Clash of Kings right now, and between it I'm reading Raymond Chandler's old detective fiction novels. They're great, love them.

As for favourites of all time - I like Shakespeare and H.P Lovecraft.

Maybe I just have a juvenile taste in literature, but I think the Song of Ice and Fire saga is absolutely awesome. The only point I agree with you on is that a lot of the characters are very unlikeable (and too many of the likeable ones get killed off!), but the intricacies of the plot are astounding to me. Actually another thing I don't like is Martin's focus on description, every character that is introduced has a paragraph on their appearance down to the colour of their socks, which really doesn't interest me, but after the first couple of books I learned to skim these bits and concentrate on the dialogue and plot developments.

As the series goes on I would say that overall more interesting characters are introduced into the direct narrative, than uninteresting ones, although those are certainly still present. I just finished the latest book about a week ago after starting the series about a year ago (I don't really read that much) and my life actually feels a little bit empty now. I'm considering going back and reading them all again, cuz I have no idea when the next one is out, it's been a while.

@Chicken Brutus: Never read the book, but I saw the movie. Didn't like what happened to him in the end.

Yeah, you're...not supposed to. Believe me, if anybody said, "I like what happened to him in the end," they'd have some serious problems they need to work out.

It takes a lot of bravery to end a story that way, on that particular sour note (though it can be argued that it's a hopeful ending, with the Chief earning some kind of redemption...especially since he's the narrator in the novel...) and I appreciate that.

Well, I'm only a few chapters in, Shake, but I definitely see what Waltz is saying. Each chapter, rather than build on the existing plot, starts one or two new plot threads instead while throwing out a million new terms without explanation. Pretty annoying. It's less a novel and more a memory test, a test I know I'll fail.

I definitely agree with that! My favorite book is Catcher in the Rye.

I'm a fan of sci-fi novels, especially Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams and Anne McCaffrey.

Right now I finished reading Hunting Eichmann by Neal Bascomb,

I'm reading the Earth's Children series by Jean M. Auel now. It describes life in the prehistory. Ayla, from Chrono Trigger is actually named after and based upon the protagonist even though it's not specifically stated by the creators I think it's rather obvious.

Just finished reading Shutter Island--holy Jesus. If you're into psychological thrillers or books with killer twist endings, do yourself a favor.
EDIT: Also, I was feeling dorky (as I sometimes do) so I read Batman: The Killing Joke. Not typically into comic books, but it's a damn good one. It's where Heath Ledger got most of his inspiration for his take on the Joker, so it's expectantly dark. And disturbing. And wonderful.
Surprisingly well written, interesting artwork, and a fairly interesting mystery. Good read.

Assuming the book is just like the movie, I had mixed feelings about Shutter Island. I thought the twist ruined it. All that beautiful, disturbing surrealism building up and building up, only to be explained away, wrapped up neat and pretty and tied with a bow. I wish it had been left a mystery, myself.

Have you read anything else by the author? I thought to read the book after, but I figured might as well not, though I'm sure it's at least as worthy as the movie.
