No contest, actually. Sunshine is the least aggrivating and most exploration-heavy Mario game I've ever played. The levels are vast and fun to explore, and always rewarding. The levels are rarely pocketed with bottomless pits outside of the later levels, and the challenge levels. The story is fairly interesting, and quite a departure from the usual fair. I actually felt that FLUDD was a great addition to the series, and made platforming far more painless, as well as added a wealth of interesting level design mechanics. In fact, outside of a few camera and control quibbles(why can't I crouch??), I really can't find anthing to complain about - I absolutely loved it, through and through.
I guess Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island would be a close second and third, respectively. As for the non-main series games, I'd say the 3 Paper Marios and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time are also among the best in the series.
SMS is an extremely aggravating game. I written why so many times that I can't make myself do it again.
Oh yeah, I read one of 'em...you know there's a back way up the farris wheel that's a lot easier, right? With the grates that you can just climb on?(do have to warn you that the camera's at its worst their - there's at least one occasion where you have to make a blind jump because something is blocking your view no matter what you do. Not a big deal, I think I only missed the jump once, but it can be annoying)
Other than that, I'd say most of your points are valid, but personally I wouldn't diss the whole game because of them.
I know about behind the ferris wheel. That's the way I tried to climb up. It's just a chore and I didn't enjoy playing the game as I'd hoped. $20 I should've spent on Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Old Door.
