Just figured I'd ask here, as we had a big discussion about this at work recently, and it's always fascinating to me that while everybody seems to agree that Alfred Hitchcock was one of the greatest directors we've ever had, there's rarely any agreement about which film is his best work.
Which do you guys prefer?
I've got to say that North by Northwest swings it for me...everything about that film is perfect. The pacing never lets up, the music is fantastic, it's got my favorite Hitchcock blonde (Eva Marie Saint...mee-yow), and Cary Grant's suit is cool enough to carry a film on its own. It's also such a perfect mix of action and comedy...from an era when such a mix wasn't nearly as common as it is now.
I'd follow that up with Vertigo, and Rope. But just choosing one...I'll cast my vote for North by Northwest.
God there are soooo many lol. I would have to say that probably my favorite was Rear Window. I like Jimmy Stewart alot hes one of my favorite actors, but I love the plot above all. I wont say too much just in case anyone hasnt seen it but its one of the best suspense movies I have seen.
A little trivia fact the part of the songwriter is played by Ross Bagdasarian, Sr the guy that created Alvin and the Chimpmunks.

Rear Window, probably followed by Psycho and Vertigo.
QUEEN OF SASS
It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
North By Northwest, no question, for all the reason CB said and of course Mt Rushmore. Probably follow it up with Vertigo and Rear Window, though I haven't watched these in awhile.
What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets!
I don't think I've seen a Hitchcock movie. I rented The Birds once as a joke because it sounded so terrible, and there was a time when I used to get chased by birds every time I went out to kick a soccer ball. But I don't think I watched it long.
So I'd have to say my favorite is Weekend at Bernie's.
Damn, that's hard, haha. I don't think I could pick a favorite. I'd say my top three favorites are North by Northwest, Spellbound, and I Confess (haven't seen the latter two in about a year or so, though). The Man Who Knew Too Much was good, though predictable. I liked To Catch a Thief, but I saw it when I was around 10, which is too young to fully appreciate the plot twists and too old to forget them.
I haven't seen Vertigo, Rear Window, Notorious, Psycho, or Suspicion yet, though I plan to remedy that as soon as possible. :3
Glad to see so many Rear Window mentions. It's not really my favorite Hitchcock film, but I adore Jimmy Stewart, and he does such brilliant work in a movie that doesn't even let him stand up. Definitely one worth savoring...just not as thrilling (to me...) as Vertigo or NxNW.
Regarding The Man Who Knew Too Much, I saw the remake with Stewart, but not the original (both of which were made by Hitchcock, for those who don't know!). The scene with the symphony near the end was pretty great, and I particularly love the last few seconds before the end...but overall it didn't do much for me. Should probably watch again.
@ChickenB: Yep, that was the version I referred to. I saw some of the one with Peter Lorre, and frankly it was pretty boring, haha. I'm really looking forward to seeing Vertigo.
Rear Window and Vertigo (i love Jimmy Stewart) are the tops; Psycho also since Anthony Perkins is such a gem, and Rope if only for its "single-shot" innovation (which was also done quite well in the film "Running Time" starring Bruce Campbell, directed by Josh Becker, another member of the Raimi Crew).
I haven't seen Strangers on a Train yet, but from the clips I've seen (in documentaries and such) it looks like something I'd really enjoy. I need to track that one down.
I finally saw Strangers on a Train, and it was incredibly great. Maybe not one of my absolute favorites, but such a wonderful experience.
It was actually part of a 4-movie set for $10, which also came with I Confess, The Wrong Man, and Suspicion, none of which I've seen. This is going to be great! Four never-seen (by me) Hitchcock films in October. Happy Halloween, Chicken Brutus!
