FFVI is my favorite RPG of all time. I don't know what it does but I love it more then any other RPG out there.
I think it's because of the characters. Each character (save Umaro, Mog and Gogo) have very interesting back stories (Cyans was so sad) and that no one person was the true hero. It was a band of hero's. Not like Cloud with a bunch of other people. It was 15? heroes who are working together. That and for it's time, the opera scene literally blew my mind.
At the moment, it's Final Fantasy IV, though I haven't played enough of them to make a definitive decision.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
My top 5: 1. Final Fantasy VI (excellent story, music, characters and gameplay) 2. Final Fantasy VII (if only they wouldn't have made those horrible sequels and prequels...) 3. Final Fantasy IX (tribute to the classics) 4. Final Fantasy IV (old school rpg at its best) 5. Final Fantasy VIII (great story) Bottom line: Sakaguchi's era rules, Nomura's blows

I'd have to agree with you there, although I find him to be one of the most memorable main villian in an FF game. In fact, other than Sepiroth(whom I actually have to admit is a very awesome badguy, espially since he has a lot of backstory that actually makes him seem somewhat believable), I can't honestly name another main villian in an FF game. They're just all very...unmemorable, IMO.

I disagree with Kefka being lame, except in dissidia (curse you Nomura!!!). In the snes translation, he was incredibly evil and funny, plus the art of the final battle was reminiscent of the ascension: demon, crucifixion, pieta, angel. Plus, his laugh was the best
That would be Final Fantasy Tactics. Still sits at the top as my favorite game of all time. I've played it more times and put more hours on it than I'd actually admit to anyone.
