Also a game a few people may like called Jade Empire had a great story.
Ah yeah, I remember playing some of that. I couldn't stand the pacing at the beginning of the game, though. Sure, it had an interesting story and all that, but I didn't need to know everyone's life story right at the beginning of the game!D=< I'll have to play more of it someday, when I actually have the time.
The style, not particularly high def' graphics but a good art style. TWEWY and Devil Survivor are great example. What i also like are fast turn based battles and Action rpgs. Oh, and likeable characters (:
insert witty text here i would normally write something funny, but i feel like a nublet here.
Games like KOTOR, Dragon Age and Morrowind were all excellent in the amount of choices that you were presented and the number of options you have when making your choices, each option having a different effect on the game.
2 of those games you mentioned are made by the same developer, Bioware. They also made Mass Effect (another great RP), which reminds me, Mass Effect 2 is coming out soon. For western RPGs, I like how one can customize their character. Lots of different combinations. (Mass Effect, Fallout 3)
What can I say, I like Bioware and they are widely known for making quality games and game engines. A well known RPG developer from the late 90's to early 00's, Black Isle Studio's, made some good RPGs using Bioware's infinity engine, including the Icewind Dale series and the acclaimed Planescape: Torment. (I have been hoping for a re-release of that game for a long time, I want to play it. From everything I heard, the game takes story telling to a whole new level.) Mass Effect and Jade Empire are two of the Bioware RPGs I have not had a chance to play yet, but I hope to get my hands on them some day.
And of course Morrowind is from Bethesda, who also did Oblivion and Fallout 3, though I still think Morrowind and its expansions are superior to both those later titles.
An engaging and not trivial story. The worldexploring, and I have to admit I kinda like levelgrinding Depends on the game though. Levelgrinding can be fun if there is alot of different kind of enemies to kill.
I like the side quests, and exploring the overworld. But I struggle to keep playing a game if there are a whole lot of random battles. I like to be able to explore the overworld freely without having to stop for a battle constantly. That's why I generally enjoy Action RPG's a lot better.
I like it when you can do new things as you grow, ie "charizard learned flamethrower" or "pikachu is evolving", it gives me a sense of acomplishment to learn new things as i grow
Music for me. It sets the entire mood for the scene and makes things more engaging and memorable for me. I love when I'm playing through a game and I catch myself humming the soundtrack as I play. Also essential is a good story and if a game has voice acting, then it needs to be decent voice acting.
Definitely the strategic turn-based battles and equipment management. I love finding new towns and new equipment, and you can't beat an intense RPG boss fight. :3 I enjoy grinding in some RPGs too.
I like rewarding exploration and some good puzzles. Golden Sun was awesome because it had plenty of puzzles in the dungeons instead of just walking though and killing dudes.
Sean Aaron ~ "The secret is out: I'm really an American cat-girl." Q: How many physicists does it take to change a light bulb? A: Two, one to hold the light bulb, the other to rotate the universe.
The battle system, without a doubt. I like RPGs that require a lot of tactics and strategy.
Dragons are cool~ Wii FC: 8902 4871 6029 9319 http://backloggery.com/ninten
[19:48] Ninten: lz, your avatar is weird. [19:48] Ninten: Reggie is like..."Duh, no Mother series for you Americans!" [19:49] lz2010: That was the point Ninten ;)
I love turn-based RPG's. Every game I purchase that is not a turn-based RPG is just "filler" until I get my hands on another turn-based RPG. (Did I mention "turn-based rpg enough?)
If I were forced to pick one thing I like most, it would have to be a good story. It has to be compelling and create some sort of emotional investment for me. I also like creating an entire party from scratch. Good graphics are a plus.
I rarely care about the music unless there is a particularly annoying song that I must be forced to listen to over and over again.
