It's times like these when I wonder why people really think Nintendo has forgotten them. I was pretty ticked at the new approach at first (closing NSider, closing NintendoWiFi.com, renovating the main site, no Camp Hyrule etc.) but I got over it. Here's an article of a person who just couldn't take it.

The classic stuff was a little better and have nostalgia on their side, but the new games have their own charm as well. Nintendo is my favorite and always will be.

Well they have the, "how Nintendo went casual", story all wrong, but it was a good read.

Is it after 9PM EST? You should probably ignore the above post.

I said the same thing a while back, I think it was around the time I got a PS2, and again during E3 of '08(although the entire event was disappointing on all sides). I think Nintendo had forgotten its fans, at least for a little while, but it seems like they're trying to turn things around. At the very least, it seems we're getting better service and more and better games than before.

nostalgia is the problem with articles like these. If these 80s gamers don't understand that you can't just pull some game series revolution out of your butt every year, then they're crazy. Nintendo tries their hardest and, in my opinion, DO care about the gamer, but they have started to focus on the casual gamer too, which people deceive as bad. Have we not had The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess? Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Trilogy? Super mario Galaxy? So those people need to stop whining and appreciate that we can have both Wii Sports Resort and Metroid Prime Trilogy. Nintendo's focus on both types of gamers should be a good thing.......

No offense to the 80s gamers I'm just saying these article writers are like this.

at first, i thought the article was truly legitimate, but about 2/3 through the article i started seeing that it was more of a hardcore whiner. I mean, look at this sentence:
How could the company that has served gamers so well and for so long be more concerned with concocting a more appealing Frisbee-tossing, wrist-flicking collection of mini games than the next epic Hyrulian masterpiece?

well it seems a lot of people like frisbee tossing mini games because of how well Wii Play sold. and also, im pretty sure that they ARE constantly working on a new zelda. since 1998, there has been a zelda game every or every other year.

Don't forget, we also got sequels we thought we'd never see, like Wario Land: Shake it! and Battalion Wars 2. And some great third party games, too. Part of Nintendo's problem is that people focus too much on the First Party stuff, and the Third-party games don't sell as well, so I could see why they wouldn't want to flood the market with their games like they did with The Gamecube(Out of all the great games on it, I'd say half of them were made by Nintendo). I mean, they still have that problem regardless, but man, you'd think the Wii had only 10 good games the way they talk. I doubt any of 'em have even heard of Dead Space: Extraction, No More Heroes, or Okami.

Weird article. It's talking about innovations control wise and then totally forgets the motion control from the Wii and touchscreen from the DS. It's talking about taking a risk and forget to mention how big a gamble Nintendo took with the Wii and the DS. Then it continues with talk about an "arms race". Like Nintendo isn't doing anything innovative just because they stopped with cutting edge graphics. That is very, very true. But they used other "weapons" in this "arms race", while MS and Sony were merely powering up there systems. He calls it a smokescreen, like Nintendo isn't planning on creating Mario and Zelda's games and solely concentrate on mini game like games. If that's true, then why Mario Galaxy, why Mario Galaxy 2, why New Super Mario Bros Wii, why the new Zelda, what about Metroid Corruption and why the new Metroid?

Is Nintendo aiming more to the casual market? Yes, but it's not ignoring the fanbase. Could they do better for the fanbase? Absolutely. How long have we been complaining about a new Kirby, a new Kid Icarus, a new Star Fox, a new F-Zero or any other older franchises. But it's not like it has completely crossed over to the dark, casual side.

When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth.

This was more of an "**** you Nintendo!" article then anything. But here are the pros and cons, as it isn't all that bad.

Here are the Pros: They were better back in the 80's and 90's, but not sustanically, which means they were always an amazing company, I believe Nintendo was losing touch with it's gamers during the Gamecube era, and Pokemon and Animal Crossing series have gotten lazy recently. They were considered one of the most innovative companies back in the day.

The cons: For every postive, there were multiple cons. First off, Nintendo is the same company we all know and love, they are just appealing to the more causal gamers. Secondly, Nintendo would never back out of the modern gaming industry. What did the writer expect, to be like Microsoft? Third, they still make Mario and Zelda game obviously. Fourth, the writer probably outright hates casual games and the Wii. There are many more cons, but I'm actually glad it wasn't from IGN, because otherwise, we would have seen hundreads of hate comments towards Nintendo.

What a moronic article.

The dude wrote this whole love letter for the quality of games Nintendo made for the "hardcore" games in the 80's and 90's, and then pretended that Nintendo doesn't still make high-quality games in this decade.

They clearly do - Nintendo's casual games lineup is awesome - ITS JUST DIFFERENT FROM HARDCORE GAMES.

FFS there are so many idiots out there that make the moronic leap of (lack of) logic that casual game = bad.

Nintendo isn't GONEWAHWAHWAH at all. It's just awesome in a different way.

Stuffgamer1

I believe the main reason we've got such a steller lineup of core games coming this year is that Nintendo knows when to quit flooding the market with games that will appeal to their casual market. Unlike the majority of their third party publishers.

Think about it: With Wii Fit Plus, Wii Sports Resort, and to a lesser extent stuff like Mario Party 8 still selling like crazy to a consumer base known for buying not-very-many games, why make more stuff specifically for them? Add to that the excellent cross-market games like Mario Kart Wii and NSMBW and it's simply time to bring out the games for the people who WANT to buy a whole bunch of games a year.

Of course, we were getting plenty good support even before this year (and really, it seems silly to suggest otherwise when I look at my game shelf), but it's only getting better! So no, I do NOT agree that Nintendo has gone downhill in the way this moronic article suggests.

Honestly, I mean, does this guy think that he's the only person Nintendo has to design games for? If he doesn't like Nintendo's new direction, that's his loss. I mean, I know it's sad to see Nintendo give a smaller amount of attention to "mainstream" games as we have come to know them over the years. But we have to admit that Nintendo did its hardcore gamers one of the biggest favors ever by opening up the casual game market. It brought millions of people into the gaming world that wouldn't have touched it with a ten foot pole mere months before hand. I mean, when has playing video games with your grandma ever been an option? When have we ever seen so many females interested in video games? For one time in the history of video games, video games are not just a nerdy past time for teenage males with a lot of acne, but for one time video games are cool, and accepted by almost all, and the majority of that is thanks to the Wii!!!! These games may seem simple to us, but the games that we started with on the NES (or beforehand) were pretty simple too. Now, if we want more "hardcore" gamers, then that is our job, not Nintendo's. We gamers must introduce them to less casual, and more deep and involving video game experiences if we want to see more "hardcore" gamers. But Nintendo has more than done its part by creating literally millions of new gamers!!!! They also still make plenty of high quality "core" titles as well as many of you have already mentioned. So there!!!!

I'm one of these 80's gamers & I completely agree with you. there are many good to great games on the wii, not counting VC or Wiiware. I myself have 20 disc titles, & only 1, Wii Sports would I consider a casual game. Many people that grew up on the N64 say that was the greatest system ever, but frankly, I find more good games on the Wii then I did on the N64. Same token, these same people that think the N64 was the greatest system of that gen, thought the Gamecube was the worst of last gen. For me, I played my gamecube a lot more then my PS2.

On this gen I have a Wii & a PS3, & while yes, game do look pretty on the ps3, that's not the major selling point on any game for me. I want a game that is fun to play, I don't care about all the bells & whistles that "hardcore gamers" today think makes a game good. I don't care how great the graphics are, how much blood, gore, cussing, & sex is in the game, if the gameplay itself isn't good, the game is not worth playing.

Flandre Scarlet, she's cute, she's colorful, she can blow up entire cities, she's also a vampire. Start running sparklepants.

I hate to be one of THOSE people, but 3rd party games on Wii are typically third rate. I can count on one hand just about the truly exceptional third party games, LKS and Boom Blox come to mind, but we're really short on games that are truly designed around the controller. Games that blow you away with innovation. Most games use motion as an afterthought, even some Nintendo titles. Personally I don't think Nintendo truly "revolutionized" anything core/casual whatever since gaming went 3D with N64.

I personally though, do appreciate the occasional title in the Wii series more than most as Wii Fit and WSR are the fantastic. As a gamer, however, I'd like to see more inventive ideas come from such an unconventional controller.

As for what I read in the article and the whole nostalgia thing, 4 words: Virtual Console, Wii Ware.

I guess I am stupid. I do not think NIntendo has forgotten any person alive. They are a company and companies also change marketing, make new strategies and ultimately sometimes vary their direction. My perspective on Nintendo is if they make a game I like, I will fork over the money. Same with third parties.
