Topic: "Dragon Ball Super" - New Dragon Ball Anime is Set for July

Dragon Ball Super, a brand new television anime inspired by Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga, will premiere on Fuji TV and other channels in July on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. This will be the first new Dragon Ball television series since Dragon Ball GT, which aired from 1996 to 1997.

The story of the anime is set a few years after the defeat of Majin Buu, when the Earth has become peaceful once again. The voice of Goku, Gohan, and Goten, Masako Nozawa commented on the new anime, saying, “We've always used the word 'chō' (Super) with Dragon Ball in commercials, games and the like, but the fact that the series titled Dragon Ball Super is beginning is the best thing ever.”

Fuji TV producer Osamu Nozaki commented on the new series as well, saying, “As I read the plot [of the series] I've already received from Akira Toriyama, my dreams for this begin to expand. An enemy even stronger than Buu or Freeza may appear...”

Toriyama is credited as the original creator, as well as for "original story & character concepts." Toei Animation's Kimitoshi Chioka (Hakaba Kitarō, Kamisama Kazoku) is the series director, and Naoko Sagawa (Yomiko Advertising, Inc.) and Atsushi Kido (Toei Animation) join Nozaki as producers. Kido entered Toei just as the company was animating the Dragon Ball Z anime's Freeza arc.

Last I checked (...3 years ago...) we had enough Dragon Ball fans to make this news worthy of its own thread. Who's excited?

I love the Dragonball franchise and some of the games. But... Akira Toriyama needs to move on. Get him working on Dragon Quest or a new manga. This announcement for a new anime isn't exciting because nothing really changes. Goku wins. Over and over. New enemy kicks butt but Goku wins. Over and over.

Akira Toriyama isn't writing this one, he's only writing the movies. In fact, last I checked, he said he's basically retired from writing Manga that isn't a collab, and will only supply scripts for animated works from time to time (I believe he said it in the afterword of Jaco the Space Patrolman somewhere, but I'm not completely positive. I know he said it somewhere, though). The dude's old, man. He'll probably officially retire soon enough. :/

That's awesome, I love the Dragonball series but seeing the same reruns of a "remastered" version of a series (DBZ Kai) from one channel to the next over and over for years killed my buzz.

I was kind of hoping it would take place from where GT ended, you know like the next generation of Z warriors (thinking back at the last episode). I guess since the Z series is the most popular of the 3, might as well stuck with it.

Actually, the "next generation of warriors" was how Z ended as well (sort of, the world was at peace and Goku was going to train that one guy). I'm hoping they'll run with that idea, but I we'll see.

My son and I will watch it. Turns out my 2yr old likes fairytail and other anime that's action packed. So this should good to go for him....lest there be dismemberment of some kind...then no....other than that, I'm pleased with this turn of events.

If you watch it on Nickelodieon or whatever channel airs it over here, I can guarantee the most you'll see are some "sweatdrops".

Unfortunately this isn't going to be a sequel to the Dragon Ball series timeline, but at least it isn't just a remaster of the existing series.

I actually miss the Toonami version of Dragon Ball Z...the music in that version was by far superior to the Japanese and Kai versions of the anime.

...what? It's taking place after the movies, which take place after Majin Buu is defeated. Unless I'm not getting what you're talking about, this very much is a sequel to DBZ within the timeline (the movies basically take place a few years before the Final epilogue-ish chapter, anyways...there was plenty of space to fill with more story).

This is exciting! Since Toriyama is involved at some level, I'm sure it'll be better than GT (which I don't think he was involved with?).

So, does this officially overwrite GT? While the two recent movies and this will take place before GT, they introduce new characters & transformations not even referenced in GT, meaning they contradict, so one or the other has to take precedence canonically (and I'd assume that'd be the storyline with more involvement from Toriyama).

So hyped for this man. I just hope the dub can come ASAP.

The press release from Toei says he's "overseeing the project" So, think Goerge Lucas' role in the new Star Wars movie...

I found out about it today by sheer accidence, and i still dont think how i feel about it.
I mean, were at the point of Goku turning blue and Frieza turning gold....

Gokus new hairdo, i can kinda understand. Its the stages a flame takes. If its merely flickering, its yellow / golden.
So basically, a regular Super Saiyan. It burns, but it wastes a lot of energy doing so.
If a flame gets hotter and more concentrated, it burns red (SSJ God, Kaioken). Much more efficient (IF the Kaioken would cause so much body strain, fixed with god mode), wastes less energy.
And if a flame reaches its peak, it turns blue. This stage is basically SSJ1 during god mode. It looks goofy, but its kinda explainable.

But lets be honest here. I get the ironie of Frieza turning gold. Its basically the "Batman" thing, become what you fear the most.
But come on, even though Cooler isnt technically canon, couldnt they at least design Friezas "5th Stage" after him ?
