It could be related to the format of the game itself. Correct me if I'm wrong, but since soccer runs continuously and doesn't have convenient areas to place commercial breaks as opposed to games like baseball and American football, so advertisers don't spend as much money to advertise during soccer games since they can't keep a captive audience focused exclusively in them (i.e. commercials) as much. So, less advertising = less money to market the sport = less exposure = fewer fans. However, with greater incorporation of Mexican and international culture into America in recent years, soccer has begun expanding its fan base in America and has been rising in popularity over here. It's not as big as baseball or American football, but it's growing.
cough cough half time cough cough
cough cough what about the 2 45 minute no-pause halves in between the 15 min. halftime? cough cough
cuz we have much cooler sports like real football and baseball and basketball.
It's just a pity you Americans suck at the sports that are actually good.
Like Cricket and F1.
I don't think they even play cricket
Actually, they do. One of the things that surprises people about cricket is that there's actually around 80 nations registered with the ICC (Cricket's FIFA). The US, Japan, Afghanistan, UAE, France... It might not be a huge sport in these places, but they play.
The US also plays Australian Rules Football, strangely enough.
@bezerker99 Please, lets not make america look even more ignorant to other nations than it already is.
I disagree — what he's stating is probably what an average joe would say about the question if you were to pull in people off the street for opinion. there are other sports that people here in the US like more than soccer... It doesn't make the average joe 'ignorant', it just means their tastes lie elsewhere.
BEST THREAD EVER future of NL >:3
[16:43] James: I should learn these site rules more clearly
[16:44] LztheBlehBird: James doesn't know the rules? For shame!!!

I don't get it. We have American teams in the World Cup, yet soccer is always riduculed by the general public.
With the huge success of the FIFA games, will things change? Will soccer become more accepted in America? Will we ever have our own nationwide professional soccer league?
Reguarding the last sentence, you guys have MLS (Major League Soccer). It seems to attract some of the English League's footballers too so it's getting there.
Regarding the question itself, I guess America likes being different, hence why American Football and the NBA are only played in America, even if any other country did take to Basketball and American Football (where I live we have a Basketball team), they would never allow it since it would no longer be an American Tradition.
What the hell? Basketball is a very popular sport outside of America. The NBA is the American league, but that's like saying that soccer doesn't exist outside of America because Manchester United doesn't play in your league.
There's a full basketball league in Australia, and many other places in the world.
Gridiron is also played outside of the America, it's worth mentioning while I'm here.
You mean, in the US? Because football is really popular in Latin America, actually it is the most played sport (at least in Mexico, Brazil and Argentina). However I don't think that the FIFA franchise will make it more succesful in your country, it is not as fun as play it by yourself :B

Really?
America is very passionate about it sports yet, last I checked, American's have never killed a goalie in soccer because he happened to miss blocking the ball causing their team to lose the match. To me, it's those fans and that mentality in sports that is most appauling to me.

Yeah. That's exactly what the millions and millions of soccer fans have done over the 100 odd years of the sport under FIFA: killed the goalie every time their team has lost the game.
I'm surprised there isn't a FPS mini game in EA's FIFA titles, given how common lynching is.
Meanwhile Ice Hockey players and teams are oh so well behaved, right?
I just find Soccer so boring. Hockey too unless they're fighting. Then I can take a few minutes of it. I generally stick to NFL Football as I've watched it my entire life. I've tried to get into Soccer and I just can't.
