Topic: Does Nintendo need a new iconic character?

In my opinion I think the answer is YES. I think its time to unviel a new mascot ( Not to replace Mario in any way). I think Starfy is a cool character but he isn't exactly new. I think a new fresh mascot would be awesome. Instead of new non games and new iterations of old games I want a brand new IP from Nintendo straight from Mr. Miyamoto himself.

Everybody loves Mario. No other person can play Sports so original than Mario himself and with all the Nintendo characters. Let alone a new IP.

I think a new “mascot” would be a horrible idea indeed.

Just for you.

Absolutely not. Nintendo is the only one in the game with a mascot still.

A new IP, definitely. Mascot? No.

Mario forever. Do you ask to Disney to change his mascot? This is the same.

If Nintendo didn't have that dumb "Policy" of theirs, they'd have an entire community of Fan-Made IPs.

No, I'm on board for a new IP (even though their are enough characters from big Nintendo franchises that have been ignored for a long time), but a new mascot? No. Mario = Nintendo.

It's funny though. I read an article somewhere (don't know where anymore) about how people would react if Mario was introduced right now, as a new IP.

Outrunner

Sega need a new mascot. They've ruined Sonic...

Mario is Nintendo. There can never be another mascot. As was mentioned above, they need a brand new IP, but not a new mascot.

Plain old gamer :)

New IP, absolutely. New mascot, absolutely not.

Mario made his first appearance in 1981, and since then, he's become a worldwide phenomenon. There's probably not a single person who doesn't know Mario. He's that famous.

If anyone needs a new mascot, it's the other two. MS has no face, especially since Master Chief is effectively dead. Sony has some it's platformers (where mascots are born); Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, and of course Sackboys from LBP. The hard part is choosing which. And to some extent, it would be a bad idea for anyone else to have a mascot-- how many Sony and Microsoft franchises have lasted a decade without getting stale? How many of those have lasted nearly THREE decades? Mario is still fresh and exciting; not many companies can say that about a property that old, even outside of gaming.

New mascot = Suicide
What we need is less Mario whoring, and more new, or reinvented ideas. A good example of would be how they brought over Starfy, or when they released Mother 3 after that Mother 2 released over 10 years earlier.

I don't know why slapshot82 even opened this topic, not because I don't believe in freedom of speech (I'm a big freedom of religion and freedom of speech supporter), but rather because the very idea of trashing Mario and picking up a new mascot and IP is horrible, it is so horrible that it'd be like asking SEGA to throw Sonic The Hedgehog on the trash heap or asking the BBC to change their name form BBC to NPR.

Mario is Nintendo and Nintendo is Mario. The two are inseparable, one cannot exist without the other just as Christians cannot exist without Christ or the Bible because they are one and the same. I enjoy Nintendo just the way it is. Mario is fine and there is no need for a different mascot or IP.

Now feba mentioned Sony and I would be quite happy if Sony did choose either Sackboy from LittleBigPlanet as their mascot or Ratchet and Clank from the franchise Ratchet and Clank as their mascot, howbeit I'm in favor the former as opposed to the latter.

Howbeit this is very much off topic but I must mention it while it is on my mind. I'd like very much for Nintendo to also focus on porting Mii's from the Wii to the DSi. I'd be very happy if I could take my Mii from the Wii to my DSi.

SORRY GUYS I WORDED THAT COMPLETELY WRONG!!!!!!!!!!

I didnt mean to replace Mario. Mario will always be Nintendos mascot forever and always. I just meant that I think a new Mascot character in the likes of Link, Kirby, Starfy, etc should be created to add a fresh new face to the line up of already great Nintendo characters. That is what I meant. I NEVER want Nintendo to replace Mario. That would be the craziest thing Nintendo could ever do. Man I guess the Loratab that got me on really screwed up my thinkin when I wrote that one

SORRY GUYS!!!!

LOL I was reading these post and was like OMG that is NOT what I meant at all. I really would love to see what Nintendo can come up with. Honestly I want to fall in love with a new Hyrule (whatever the new place is) if you know what I mean. Instead of goin back to Hyrule some new place.

Mascot is a poor choice of wording. You mean iconic character. The last big one was Olimar, more recently Starfy, and while a lot of so called hardcore gamers have hated it. The Miis are considered "mascots" as well (hey, don't knock it, it helped with the expanded audience like Mario did in previous generations).

Overall though, I think they could stand to have a few more characters to call there own or even supply more recognition and games from lesser mascots (Chibi Robo should get more top notch games as to be recognized by the average game player. Same goes for Jill Dozer).

Yeah, I agree. They are making some new hardcore titles including a Mario and a Metroid as well as a new Zelda, but those are all, while really awesome, old friends. I want to see new faces too, aimed at the experienced gamer.

I often wonder if twenty-five years from now when Mario and Link are about fifty-years-old if they'll still be going on adventures. Their games are aimed at kids who haven't played all the old games, so they'll never really be that old to most people, and their stories are simple enough to rehash again and again, as we well know, while gradually improving the actual game play.

Also, we have to remember that both characters are Miyamoto's doing, and he recently said at the E3 round table that he doesn't think he is going to be making new characters -- that we should look to younger developers for this. I hope Nintendo sees a new star developer rise up the ranks soon. Link was looking tired in his last adventure. At least we still have Olimar to look forward to, if Pikmin 3 is ever finished. That series is still quite young and full of potential.
