Topic: Does Miyamoto still deserve his reputation today that he had during the eighties and nineties?

Everybody speaks fondly of Miyamoto for what he has done in the past, and rightfully so. There's no denying that he was responsible for Nintendo's successes for its first two - three decades of designing videogames.

But now? Based on his current work alone, is he still relevant? It feels like he's still stuck in the past while the world, technology and gamers have moved on without him. Sure, he can still have some good ideas and as good as Nintendo was in the past, it is still the past, He can't remain there forever. He makes games based on what he personally wants rather than what everybody else wants.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

I haven't had too many complaints with any recent games he's been involved with so yeah I'd say he's still got it.
He is getting up there in age though. It's scary trying to imagine a Nintendo without Miyamoto.

making games based on what he personally wants has worked so far. until people stop buying them, i get the feeling they're gonna keep going with what works, lol.
and before people reply with 'BUT IT'S NOT WHAT I WAAAAANT ASDFKJASDFJASFKJ', let me reiterate: people are still buying the games he has a hand in. Until that stops, they're not gonna fix what isn't broken (according to their wallets). vote with your money if you feel that strongly about it.

Why does this thread sound like a trademark Waltz/tendoboy question?

Anyhow, yes, I believe he does. If nobody is complaining about what the man makes for us nowadays, I don't see reason for us to boot him out.

Seeing as the games he's based on what he likes have been smash successes how has he become old.

Also how have Technology and Gamers moved on so far. Care to elaborate.

tbh, i think miyamoto still tries to cater for the same age group for each gen of consoles.
most of us who played mario on the nes and snes will prefer those games, while younger gamers will probably enjoy the more recent mario games instead.
i suppose it`s because of the japanese culture where video games are more aimed towards the kids rather than all age groups.

Have you ever noted where Miyamoto works now? He's more of an adviser than a director now. He's not as involved in the games as he was in the past.

I think he really needs to come up with a new idea and actually work on a new IP for Nintendo instead of just advising others on how to do things.

When I close my eyes, I see pixilated blood.

Many would argue that gaming was better in the past anyway, so if he sticks to those same ideals/philosophies and isn't interested in all the modern bells and whistles then that could be seen as a very good thing. Refreshing even.

Many of the games that he's been involved with in the past decade have been among the biggest selling and highest rated, so I think he is definately still relevant.

You do realize most of the Mario games and a few other things come from his Idea's but is usually made by another team, He's always mostly been a producer with more input. In the lastest Iwata ask's he says he must shot down at least 70 idea's a day.

To note these are the games he's directed or been directly involved in.
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong Junior
Donkey Kong 3
Super mario bros
Legend of Zelda
Super mario bros: the lost levels
Super mario bros 3
Ocarina of time
Wii music
Pikmin

At this point he's the Ideaman and quality overseer.

yes, yes, and also yes.

Sure, he can be a bit old fashioned and against putting storytelling in many games, but as others has found ways to make storylines work without putting too much as to annoy him (see: Link's Awakening, Super Mario Galaxy) that are far superior to the forced and annoying overdone storylines of certain games (see: half of Square Enix's game, Metroid Other M), it's not really much of an issue.

While I do agree that Nintendo's old fashioned qualities are becoming more apparent (What with this silly technological doohicky called the internet or something) It seems that they understand that online capabilities are important to us, the consumers.

However, from a quality standpoint, I think they're doing amazingly well. People's reputations don't just go away because they stopped working or because they died, if that was the case, we wouldn't have history classes. Miyamoto will always be a legend and something that designers should aspire too, even if they never did fight octoroks during their childhood.

Thaaaaaanks for noticin' me.

Hokori

yes just like Gumpei Yokoi still deserves reputation.... and he's dead. I mean come on he does make some of the best games, even in the 21st century (even though people like there 5 minute apps and there COD)
