Topic: Does HP's departure from the PC market signal the end of PC's?

I've spent the majority of the day trying to update my wifes HP laptop, which constantly fails to update. I despise this stupid laptop and even if HP decided to stay in the market, I'll never purchase another one. I've just had way too many problems with each and every HP computer I've owned, especially the laptops. ASUS, Dell, Apple and Sony all make Laptops that all leave HP in the dust anyways.

HP leaving the game won't change a thing. My hubby liked his HP laptop just fine although he hardly used it so the battery kinda died on itself. it was weird. I'm a Dell laptop girl myself although I did like the HP all in one computer because of the touchscreen. But then I had take it in to Best Buy to get it fixed because something happened with the memory or the hard drive or something. I can't remember. Since then I've been a Dell girl. Their laptops rock!!!!

The PC market will get smaller as people who don't need to do "higher tasks" such as graphics, programming and the likes move to iPad and other tablets, because that's enough for them. I know I personally do almost everything via iPad and bluetooth keyboard now.

But will the PC market disappear entirely? Not likely.

Please stop generalizing things, You make it seem like the entire world is buying tablets. The computer market is much much bigger than the tablet market. Will this change? No one knows. The tablet market could just be a fad for all we know. The only tablets that sell above expectations are iPads. HP's TouchPad tablet was a flop, and there are many Android tablets that aren't doing much better. If it wasn't for the iPad, the tablet market would be nowhere as popular as it is now.

Comparing an iPad to a full-featured PC is like comparing a Ford Focus to a Mercedes. Computers are just so much more versatile and advanced than tablets. You can't do much programming on a tablet, you can't develop animated films on a tablet. Most of the software that tablets use is developed on a PC. If the PC market crashes, what will animation studios like Pixar use to make their movies? What will game developers use to make their graphics-intensive games? Not everyone has the need for a tablet. Plenty of people are satisfied with their laptops and desktop PCs. So please... stop. Just stop.

@tendoboy1984: The only things I use my computer for anymore are programming and graphics; all of my casual stuff is done on my iPad. Tablets are incredibly portable, reliable, and enjoyable to use. They're not a fad - they're awesome.

Also, don't criticize tablets for not doing what they're not designed to do.

That's my point. Until Apple makes a tablet that has all the features of a computer (including a full OS), tablets will never be a good replacement for PCs. They are very limited in their functionality. They are only useful for casual things like gaming, videos, music, drawing, etc. I highly doubt Apple will ever put the Mac OS on an iPad, since that will cut into the sales of their computers. And Google doesn't even have a real PC OS, Chrome is just designed to run on the web.

I'm saying if the PC market completely crashes and they are no longer being made or used, then the entire internet would die.

Remember when the video game industry crashed? Yeah.

The internet will never die. Not so long as it lives on in our hearts ...

you understand the death of the internet is about as likely as the death of internal plumbing, right

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

so long as server hardware is still being created (which is what IBM — and now HP — still do) and also devices that access it, the internet will never die. it may change or evolve eventually, but society is too closely linked to it now to allow it to die out entirely.

Oh lord, you really can't read and comprehend, can you? I said that tablets aren't for everyone. I said that the PC market will still be around for people like Pixar and game's designers.

So to repeat, and please for the love of God listen this time, Tablets will eat away SOME of the PC market, because for some people iPads are enough. It's enough for me, for both my job and home. And I'm not the only person there, either.

Long term the PC market will shrink, because for many people iPads and tablets will be far more covenient and comfortable to use. Some people are happy with just a Ford, others want a Ferrari as well. And don't worry, even if the PC market crashes completely, there will still be demand for custom-built hardware for places like Pixar (who already don't use off the shelf computers). And where there is demand, there will be suppliers. It might be a B2B transaction, but it will still be there. That's entirely hypothetical, though.

Oh, and for the record, it's quite easy to develop an animated film using the iPad. That's the beauty of applications.

Now if you do decide to reply to this and argue some more (as I'm sure you will), do yourself a favour and don't say stuff that supports my argument this time around.
