@SuperPeach: I'm sorry SuperPeach. Were you fired or let go? Where was it that you were fired or let go? Was it directly influenced by you being unable to sufficiently communicate with customers? Keep your head up, I'm between jobs too, not every job will be the right fit for you no matter how hard you try.
Update: You're not a complete failure or a loser. You'll find better.
@sykotek Yes, I was fired, from the Hobby Spot (click link in sig for website) And yes he told me it was influenced by you being unable to sufficiently communicate with customers. Now I'm very sad.
@jwl: This may be different, but I don't like leaving messages. I end up feeling way more self conscious leaving a message because there's no one else to talk to on the other end. Maybe its that I feel I'll sound stupid or I lose confidence that I can quickly and easily get my point across. I'll even go as far as hanging up and writing a script if I have to leave a message.
In regards to Aspergers, I didn't know what it was either, as I've never heard of anyone having it growing up, so I checked it out on youtube and looked it up on wiki. I'm glad that those with it that are here are able to find a common interest in gaming and as far as I can tell, I wouldn't know from your posts until you've come forward. Thanks for sharing, I feel anywhere else online you'd get negative comments, glad NL isn't one of them!
@SuperPeach: I'm sorry you got fired from your job. We each have our own strengths and weaknesses, and while it IS possible to learn to overcome shyness, it may be that wasn't the right job for you. I hope you find a new one soon. In the meantime, though, don't hate yourself. I always find that I learn something and grow as a person whenever something bad happens to me. I hope that this turns out like that, so that you'll come out of your temporary troubles stronger and better than ever.
Moco Loco If you find yourself spiritually drifting (as I was for far too many years), remember that Jesus can and will walk across the water to reach you and bring you back to shore.
Sorry about your job SuperPeach. You seem really nice, so it's a shame. I'm sure you'd be great at customer service if you weren't shy!
Try working at a movie theater. They really break up the roles so for the most part, you aren't really going around and talking to customers. They come to you and 95% of your interactions are routine (one ticket for xyz movie? ok that will be $10, enjoy the show). You also might be able to find an office type job that's more organizational than customer service work.
You do get the occasional complaint/jerk customer, but as long as you are basically not a jerk to the customers, they're usually so strapped for people it doesn't really matter. They'll just schedule you depending on what role your best at (concessionist, box office, or usher). Plus also, you get free movies, popcorn, and soda. Pretty good deal.
Good luck. I know I used to hate (and I mean freak out have panic attacks) cold calling people. Then I got a job that required me to do it all day. I still don't like to do it, but I'm not afraid of doing it anymore. It sucks that you got fired, but it happens to a lot of people, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.
We'll it was my first job and that just makes it so much harder. A movie theater sounds cool. Are there any other jobs for a teen who has the social skills of a rock? I wanted to try to get one at gamestop because video games are my life, I might be better at that because I'd actually know what I'm talking about. One of my problems was that the store had more than just video games, so when I talked to a customer they'd ask about things I don't know.
I could quite easily be shy if I allowed myself to, instead, I have a series of masks that I use to meet new people. I spend time figuring them out, before deciding if they are worthy of the real me.
As for strangers, if I feel nerves setting in I just remind myself that I will probably never ever see them again, so it doesn't really matter how bad or good it goes. I have found that if you are uneasy around someone, they pick up on this and there reactions change. You notice this, and the whole uneasy situation snowballs.

@SuperPeach Really sorry to hear about your job. :/ I agree with Token Girl, you should try and get a job where there's a clear routine when working with customers. The ticket booth at a cinema sounds great because everything is laid out plain and clear. They specify movie, you ask what seats, they choose, then you hand the tickets over and wish them well. Once you have that routine down without any worries (and you'll lose the worries over time as you fall into the comfort of the routine), you'll find you're more relaxed with people and then you'll be well on your way to something more complex.
i was more shy and quiet but I got a job where I had to greet people and try to sell them things. I worked there for about a year and now I have no problem talking to people. Sometimes I will compliment a stranger or start small talk. It gets easier.
