Is it too good to be true?!? Make my own RPG?!? I'm sold. I am downloading as I type. Is it very user friendly? Or does it take a while to learn the in's and out's?
Hi Spoony - I'm still pretty new to it myself - on the surface, yes it is easy.
But there's a whole lot of customisation you can also do, right down to Ruby programming and sprite editing to come up with something much more original, and that's much harder. I've had a look at various forums and tutorials on sites, and OH my God some people are creative.
Anyway, I'll post up my first effort soon when it's finished. It's only a couple days work, so it's very simple, short, and rough, but it'll give you an idea of what the software is capable of.
I know the game back to front (of course), and I can run through it to completion in about 30 minutes. I'm predicting it'll take anything up to 2 hours - depending on how quickly you discover the secrets you need to defeat the end boss.
Please do give me some feedback - as far as I can tell there aren't any glitches in the game - but any feedback will help me with the next one (which I indent to be far more in-depth).
Oh - sorry about the tripple post. I didn't realise.
Thanks Andy _ It's great fun. I'm in the planning stages for a 'proper' game now, one that'll take me a few months to do, but I'm hoping to have original graphics etc, rather than the ones provided with the software.
I spent most of today messing around with graphical styles - I quite like the high-contrast noir-ish look.
Also, I don't know if anyone at Nintendolife wanted to help out and make this a collaborative project - but if anyone is good at spriting (graphics) or music, I'd love to have your help - I really want to make this a high quality project (I'll post demos to get feedback as it goes along, too).
Now this topic's been around a while, I hope a few people have been inspired to give RPG Maker a go! It's awesome software!
I downloaded the free trial and it's pretty cool, the one thing I'm having trouble with is linking areas together so you can get from one place to another. How do you do that?

EDIT: Also, how do you make houses?
To link areas you want to make an event, so first click the red "ev" button on the top of the screen.
Next, right click on the area you want to link to, and select "quick event" (or words to that effect), and then "transfer"
A window will open up, and just need to select the co-ordinates of the place you want to transfer the characters to.
Hope this helps! If you're interested, go to: http://www.rpgmakervx.net/ - there's quite a few good tutorials for newbies there.
As for making houses - use the tiles provided to you - first you want to build the walks using a brick tile, and then the roof using a roof tile.
Can you give me a list of the of locations/levels and events in the game e.g.Woods, Battles, Boss Battles, Undersea caverns, Someone dies in the story.

Well, the first few locations - Wintery Overland, Wintery Village, Graveyard Dungeon, Battle, Title Screen and Gameover.
I'm going to have look into this. It looks interesting, but I had some trouble finding a download that made it clear where. If anyone has a link, please post it.
EDIT: Waltzelf, I downloaded your game. So far it looks pretty good. However, I don't have an account on the site you download it on, it won't let me get the instructions for another 1600 seconds .
All right I'll start working on them. In the meantime here's one I knocked up while I was waiting for the locations. It's sort of a theme to some sort of main altar, Like the temple of time in Ocarina of Time. http://www.mediafire.com/?tl1mv1ey5y3

http://www.rpgmakervx.com/ - if you click on 'downloads' it will direct you to a few portals - as far as I can tell they work. That said, I can't remember which I downloaded it from.
Glad you enjoy the game _. It's silly and basic, but it was good fun to put together, and because it only takes me a half hour to play I've finished it a bunch of times, and you'd think I'd be sick of it by now, the number of times I had to playtest it
Making RPGs is a very, very addictive experience. I'll put up an early teaser demo of the 'proper' one I'm working on now once I've done it. So far? It's a million times better.
FATEM - that's really good work! I might use that for the title music. Do you want to e-mail me your name/ username to mattsainsb... that you would like me to credit in the game?
