It's interesting how people can like music but in such totally different ways.

Quite true; and I'm certainly aware of the fact that someone might not explicitly know the theory but could very well intuitively have a very advanced grasp of what they're doing. In The Beatles, Paul clearly had a technical grasp of theory that was polished and virtuosic, but John, even though he had none of that, intuitively came up with some wonderfully complex chord progressions that musicologists studying popular music might take many pages to examine.

I play guitar and saxophone and own a harmonica that I fool around with occasionally.

Scared of the future, but bored with the past.

Drums, trumpet, baritone, and I tried to learn the guitar, I can play a bit but not very good at all.

@Corbie....dude you don't have Rock Band? The drums are excellent when you add the three cymball additions to them and get a better pedal. I just downloaded somemore stuff tonight...new Underoath and Pearl Jams Brother Live. Im too tired to play them at the moment I just put 30 hrs in at work in the last two days

I learned some piano when I was younger. More recently I've picked up the Ocarina. Does that count?

My voice is my instrument. Seriously. I am a vocal music education major right now and I will be entering my senior year. I also know how to play a good bit of piano (you have to be able to in my degree). I am a composer as well, and I love that almost as much as I love to perform. Music is my life, and pretty much all I listen to is the music of Koji Kondo, Nobuo Uematsu, Grant Kirkhope, Yasunori Mitsuda, Kumi Matsutoya...video game music is great, and very well-written (some of it, like the composers I just mentioned) and I will argue with anyone who disagrees, if it's just because it's from a video game. There's opinion, and then there's just ignorance

I have Rock Band 2 on my xbox 360, but I spend the majority of my time doing the vocals. I never knew I had such a great rock voice before. Maybe I missed my calling.

Plain old gamer :)

Just my vocal chords.

I'm super jealous, Grensworthhero. Vocals have never been my strong point. I love to write music, but it's a pain tracking down someone to sing for it, so I usually do it myself and it sounds icky.

SingStar tells me I sing well, but I've listened to the playbacks and I know better.

haha! That's why I don't like to play music games like Rock Band. Besides the fact that if I don't know the song, I can't really learn it unless I listen to it (I want to be able to read the sheet music, haha), I feel like it's an insult to my abilities that others can do better than I can just because they know how the game works, when they clearly can't sing (or play guitar very well). I know that sounds pompous, and it probably is, but think: If you dedicated much of your life to music, and some video game tells you someone who's never studied music is better than you, that doesn't seem right, does it? Well..that still sounded pompous, didn't it. Oh well, that's what studying music seriously does to you. You're required to have some degree of smugness.

Well, aside from the vocals, it's not exactly a music simulator. And the vocals are pretty accurate, actually, but the scoring system is somewhat lax. That's all. If you played it, the game would certainly award you more points than me, for example.

But I understand the feeling. I like to pretend that's how I feel when people ask me to play Guitar Hero. I say, "I'd rather play real guitar," not because I look down on it, but because I stink at it.

grenworthshero

yeah. that's pretty much it. I don't really look down on it, (most of the time) I just have a grudge against those games because I am not very good at them.

I actually went to an open jam night to see if I was any good in the real setting. I sang Man in the Box from Alice in Chains. I was actually alright. Shocked the heck out of me.

NPR was talking with a composer a week or two ago who made this statement: "If Beethoven were alive today, he'd be doing video game music."

grenworthshero

Hmm, I don't know about Beethoven. He really didn't care what anyone else thought, he just did his own thing. I don't know if he'd be into VG music. Maybe Debussy, or Schubert...coincidentally, those are two of my favorite composers.

@ Corbie....LOL thats cool. If you have the drums calibrated right on Rock Band they are awesome. I play almost all songs on Hard or Expert. Some Expert is ridicilous without having double bass pedals so have to play on Hard. .......Oh You only got 2 trophies on your PS3 account. You gots to create some LBP levels.
