Topic: Do You Ever Get Into Verbal Arguments With Family Members Who Are Less Tech Savvy Than Yourself?

I constantly get into arguments with my family regarding technology because I have the best understanding of how it works, but my family doesn't really take my knowledge seriously and sometimes completely ignore me when I warn them of potential issues despite the fact that they don't even have a working understanding of how those kinds of things work. It's really irritating. Do you guys ever experience these issues with members of your family?

I still get into arguments of me buying my own games with my family members... I have my own job so its even more irritable.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

Not really. I'm no expert, but I do know more than the rest of my family. It's never caused arguments though. If I offer advice, it's generally taken seriously. They don't always take it, but you have to know where to set boundaries. People aren't obligated to take your advice just because you give it and know more about something than they do.

Plus Google is a thing. 99% of all tech issues can be solved by googling it. Having or being that family member who knows stuff about computers is kind of an obsolete concept now, no?

@SpookyMeths: Oh no trust me there are many people that would rather ask than learn and still think they know everything. My third job is Tech Support for a pharmaceutical company to support their sales reps. I've gotten people from age 21-62 and all of them, ALL OF THEM need to be banned from using computers (and ipads, and phones and printers) for life. There is a line between job security and maintaining your sanity. Half of the time I almost want to be like, Google is your friend; in the time it took for you to get to me you could have had an answer. Yet these same people will argue me down about something in a heartbeat.

Not especially. Seeing as it is my area of specialty, they usually just go along with my advice if they can't figure it out for themselves.

Now my close friends on the other hand...

Most of my family is normally pretty good at taking my tech advice, though I don't pretend to be all-knowing and will defer them to more experienced sources if needed.

What I run into is that not everyone realizes that software development (which is what I do) and computer tech support (which is another aspect of the company I work for) are very different things. Everyone expects me to be able to fix their computers. While I can solve simple software issues and clean less nasty infections (I call myself level 1 support), if there's a major hardware or software issue or if the computer has something truly nasty (like cryptolocker), I can't do anything for them.

That said, all of our field techs run into stubborn or clueless customers from time to time that should never be allowed near a computer; you'd be surprised how many people are still running Windows XP.

The worst thing (and I've even dealt with this):
Support: Please open your web browser, so we can set up a Screen Connect session.
Customer: What's a web browser?
Support: The internet browser.

Support: ...Please click the blue letter E.

No, not really. If they listen they listen and if they don't then it's not my problem.

I think probably the most frustrating thing is when I give a suggestion about what hardware to buy and they flat out ignore it. Or worse yet they'll listen, get the thing and then not use it. A few years ago my brother was complaining about how his computer was running slow. So I offered to fix it. Threw in some more RAM, put an SSD in there for boot, clean install of windows 7. Standard stuff. A few months later I ask how it's running and he replies with "oh, we don't really use it anymore, I can do everything on my tablet". Kinda annoying..... but he paid for it so I can't complain.

Not really, but it can be a pain actually getting my parents to watch a movie in HD.

We only have one HDMI cable, which is usually plugged into the cable box, while the PS3 is hooked up using the standard R/Y/G component cables that came with it (that only do 480p).

Whenever I wanted to watch a movie, I'd simply unplug the HDMI cable from the cable box and plug it into the PS3, and then switch over from the component cables to the HDMI cable in the system's settings (all this takes about maybe 3 minutes), and simply put everything back when I'm done. However, my dad is convinced that it doesn't make a difference, so we hardly ever do it when we watch a movie together.

Earlier this year I even set Netflix up on our 360 (which is hooked up using that five pronged HD component cable that came with our original 360), so watching HD movies is no more complicated than watching them in SD on the PS3, but after doing it a few times, he just went back to the PS3...

Nope, not really. Sometimes they listen but most times it goes through one ear and out the other and if they what to think they know more about it, I just leave it for them to learn the hard way. Especially when they take tech advice from a store specialist over me. I know their personal preference, set-up, etc. compared to them who are trying to get them to spend more for features they wouldn't even use or can't use.

I give the more technical aspect for them a pass since to can be hard to take in, but it's the common sense parts that makes me face palm. Be it clicking on those "your computer is infected" popups and downloading the "recommend" program to remove it, to asking where's so and so place when they asked for and have a iPhone 6 with 3 map apps and Siri.

I get asked about everything around the house, even devices that I've never used before (such as smartphones and Samsung tablets). Sure I have a hand-me-down iPhone now, but even before I got my hands on one I was expected to issue tech support on the bloody thing.

@RR529: I dont know about this particular situation, but component video can be used for both HD and standard video signals. Maybe you meant composite cables which can only do 480i.

My brother argued with me aggressively once saying that I "broke our internet" because I changed the Wifi password (It needed updating). He said this because a couple of days later after I did this, the internet went down. At the time I had poor internet and it was always going down. It annoys me just thinking about that day, mainly because of the aggressive way he was shouting at me. He apologised eventually....

Nah. If anything, they probably depend on me a bit too much considering I'm not really that tech savvy and just Google most things. ^^;

Argue with family who aren't tech savvy? Of course not, that's really petty and over-the-top. I think it's a little amusing, especially when it comes from my mom because she's absolutely ridiculous. Everything's a pronoun with her: it, the thing, another it... Half the time, I'm trying to decipher what it is she's actually asking me, hehe...
