Topic: Do You Create Your Own Narrative for Game Series Without an Overall Story?

Some series, such as Super Mario, Kirby, Smash Bros. & Donkey Kong really don't have an overall story, so do you create your own as a replacement, or do you take them as is?

Personally, probably since I've been doing so since childhood, I keep one up for the Super Mario series, lol.

Yoshi's Island - The story is the same as the game, mostly. Baby Bowser's transformation is caused by a stone of Galactic power that Kamek has set in his wand (it's destroyed at the end of the game, and Bowser's later transformations are caused by a different source of Galactic power).

SMB - Bowser's initial offensive against the Mushroom Kingdom.

SMW - Bowser went into hiding underground after his last defeat, where he builds up his army in secret & invades Dinosaur Land.

Paper Mario - Same as the game (Bowser's second attempt at the Mushroom Kingdom). If you remember, Bowser was sent flying into space at the end, making this next transition in my homemade order more cool, IMO...

Super Mario Galaxy - Bowser obtained Galactic power while in space, and invaded the Mushroom Kingdom once again, with a galactic armada, taking the fight to space. Mario must borrow the Galactic power of Rosalina & the Lumas to beat him (he is literally paired with a Luma at all times, I believe).

NSMB - While Mario & Bowser were fighting in space, his army conquered the Mushroom Kingdom for him, which Mario has to liberate upon his return. Bowser, weak from the recent battle, hasn't had his Galactic power restored yet.

SML - The space pirate Tatanga's interdimensional prison breaks open (weakened by damage done by Mario & Bowser's space duel). His Galactic power is so strong it warps reality (Sarasaland is just a warped Mushroom Kingdom in my version. The Egypt stage is just Bowser's castle, and the Sphinx Bowser, as Mario would suspect him first).

SML2 - In a last ditch effort to survive the final battle of the previous game, Tatanga causes many Galaxies to crash into the Mushroom Kingdom in an attempt to lay it to ruin (the off the wall "Zones" in the game are really crashed Galaxies). Mario once again returns to space to defeat Tatanga near the end of the game, and while victorious, Tatanga manages to create a dark clone of Mario (Wario) who takes control of Peach's castle for the final arc (yes, it's really Peach's castle in this version).

SM3DL - Having time to rest, Bowser's Galactic power is restored, and he tries to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom again (without Galactic power of his own, Mario has to dodge around Bowser's offense, trying to find a way to make him slip up, resulting in the style of boss fights seen here).

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story - Story roughly the same (the Dark Star naturally has an abundance of Galactic power). Bowser's ability to transform into a giant is because Mario & Luigi's attempts to supercharge him briefly increase the flow of his Galactic power.

NSMBWii - Bowser tries to invade the Mushroom Kingdom again (his trump card is his transformation into a giant, which Kamek has learned to tap into and increase his Galactic power).

SMG2 - With his giant transformation perfected, Bowser once again takes the fight to space.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star - The story is mostly the same. The Sticker Star is a source of great Galactic power (like the Dark Star before it). In the end, Mario uses it's power to erase all Galactic power from the Mushroom Kingdom (including Bowser).

Of course, this doesn't include every Super Mario title I've beaten (which also includes SMRPG & SPM, which I haven't placed yet), but I hoped you enjoyed it, and would like to see if you guys have your own created stories.

Not really. I'm ok with whatever excuse for a story the game comes with.

Of course, I can't imagine playing these games without doing that. I also make up dialogue for characters that don't talk much. Though admittedly it usually doesn't get too complex these days.

I seem to do this in games that have a very loose story, like Affordable Space Adventure.

My favorite game to do this in though is Scribblenauts Unmasked (a guilty pleasure), I just love to imagine the entire Green Lantern Corps. fighting Doomsday.

I always do it in games like Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, and Sims.

Sure, the entire Mario series can be explained on the assumption that Princess Peach is a chronic sufferer of Stockholm Syndrome. She orchestrates the entire thing. Tips bowser off as to when security at the castle will be low...etc etc
