Topic: Do video games lead to violence?

You know, I'm reminded of a point that I saw on television last week about this topic.

Japan is one of the least riotous and least violent countries in the world, and they've had games such as that SEGA CD one about home invasions, and a series of fighting games called Battle Raper.

Only for children under 14 and people who are already mentally unstable. I was at my friend's cousin's house for a night over the summer, and they were playing Sleeping Dogs, Halo and CoD. I think one was 15, but the other was around 8. You could obviously tell that the 8 year old was more violent and aggressive than most kids that age. We ended up dropping the two brother's old toys off a really (really) tall staircase. I may be wrong, but that's not normal behaviour. But the same can be said for any form of media. Films, TV, books, anything. Any form of media can influence a child's mind for the negative or positive.

I say 14 is the age where people can be trusted not to be negatively influenced by media. Obviously don't let your 14 year old watch the Exorcist or porn, but in general, 14 is the age where they can watch the majority of stuff responsibly.

I'm just wondering - why do you think 14 is the age people become more mature and uninfluenced?
Because I'm 14, and I'm just curious.
Is it because, do you think, that most teens have hit puberty by the age of 14, so they become more mentally mature and independent by then?

This is where I have a problem.

If a 14 year old is old enough to play a flippin' Call of Duty game, they're old enough to watch porn. Why the heck does society insist that extreme violence is more wholesome for young minds than sex? Sex is the FUN one ffs.

@WhiteKnight: Can you point me in the direction of some of the studies you've found? I find it hard to find anything legitimately good and academic on the subject that I can show my lecturers at uni. They're all on the side of VIDEO GAYMZ R BAD MMKAY

I'll see if I can track some down for you, dude. Might take a few days, it's been a few years since I looked into the topic myself.

I'm sick of all my 10 year old son's friends asking him to come over and play Call of Duty with them, it's the only reason I won't let my son go there. They're always welcome to come over and have a nice hearty Pokemon or Mario Kart session though

Because, firstly, viewing porn is ILLEGAL under the age of 18 (at least here in Australia), and it's just inappropriate at that age. CoD is really different situation here. If you are mature enough and have a good mindset, CoD will not damage you.

Yeah, two things

1) I was talking about the morality of the issue, not the legality.

2) I have a great deal of difficulty understanding why extreme violence, which is destructive, is tolerated for consumption by younger people, but sex, which is literally productive (and, again, much more fun than shooting someone in the head) is apparently something we need to protect kids from.

This will be good. Please tell me how a 14 year old watching sex will "damage" them, where a exploding head will not. I want scientific studies proving that sex is more harmful on the psyche than violence is.

You do know in some countries around the world (Spain, Japan) it is legal for 13 year olds to be HAVING sex, right? Surely that's even more harmful than watching it.

It's actually 16. While I wouldn't let my kids watch porn, my 10 year old son has seen a movie with a sex scene (no, there was nothing visible), he felt embarrassed, but he was curious about it and it became quite an educational experience.

I won't let him watch ridiculously (and in CoD's case, realistic) violent content, there's no real educational value in it for children.

You have bought up some great points there. I think this all comes to what an individual ethnically thinks is "right" or "wrong".
I have, personally, never found that violent games have damaged me in any way; when I was younger I told myself it is completely fake. Now I have no problems with it. If you're mature enough, violence in video games should not damage you.
Sex and porn, on the other hand, are a completely different issue. Here in Australia, the legal age of these is 18 (i believe) so here all that has no place for anyone under that age. I have had a talk about that at school in sex ed (always fun) about the bad things of porn.
I believe you have no problem with sex but a problem with violence. That's your opinion, and your beliefs, and I respect that.

Goodday to you sir. I need to go.
