I know, the title sound dumb but it a little bit more complex, here it is,
Pay $60 for a Amazing Story but little Gameplay.
Pay $60 for Great Gameplay but a Generic Story.
Choose and explain how it's better than the other. it may sound dumb, but hey... :/

When you buy a game you expect it to have both great gameplay and story. But, when it comes to Nintendo games, you only get one of each.
Like Mario, great gameplay, little to no story, and Zelda, all story and reused gameplay from the series.

Not every game can be like Skyrim or Batman, which have both.

For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday.

Im gonna put it straight. I'd rather have better gameplay than story, just cause thats what video games were originally supposed to be, ya know? So yes, story is great, but not ALWAYS neccasary.

I'm not sure I understand? But I do think stories, even the smallest stories, are necessary to provide narrative context and motivation for what you're doing in a game. Even Donkey Kong had the most basic setup, and it was better because of it. I can't see how you can have a game with no story whatsoever anymore.

I rather have good gameplay than a good story. You can have the greatest story ever but if the gameplay is bad to the point of being frustrating I probably wont complete the game and never see the end of the story.

Gameplay > Story

Don't get me wrong, story is always a welcome edition in my book, but if the gameplay is bland or bad, then I just can't get into the game.

No, story isn't necessary. I mean, a die hard Mario series fan. Most of my favourite games have practically no story whatsoever.

Gameplay > Story (by a millionfold).

Games should games, not virtual movies.

I don't demand gameplay from my books, and I don't demand story from my games.

Just let me play and stop talking to me.

Dat question.

Anyway... I do appreciate a little backstory and setting in my games. It makes the game world much more interesting and enjoyable.

They have a story - Just a very basic one. The most recent game with no story whatsoever that I've seen is Minecraft. Otherwise most games haves even the most basic premise. Do you really think Mario would be as fun if you didn't know who Mario was and just went through a much of levels with not even the smallest context? And the game just ends when you reach the last level for no reason? Personally, I'd find it very odd. I'm not sure I'd want to play that game.

I wouldn't honestly be too bothered. I mean, I played quite a few fan games and enjoyed those too, and some had literally zero story. Not even an excuse plot.

Of course, it depends on the genre. Story in a fighting/platform/shoot em up game? Not really necessary. Story in an RPG? Oh so necessary.

@CM30 There hasn't been a good fighting game with no story since...ever. If nothing else, the characters always have backrounds, and that always makes them way more interesting. And what few shmups I've played are usually made better by having more plot to them, or at least made more memorable. I've played a lot of Shooters and the ones that always stick out in my mind are games like Zero Wing, Sapphire, Trouble Shooter, Castle Shikigami, and Touhou which all have actual plots and cutscenes. Maybe it's not necessary, but it can really boost the game quite a bit, IMO. As for platformers, I don't think I've ever seen one that didn't have even the most basic premise.

I mean, I'm a guy who thinks of Story as a nice bonus, but I don't think I've ever seen a game that wasn't improved even a little bit by having a decent story, even if that story was just a basic premise. So long as it adds context for what you're doing, it stops feeling like a waste of time, at least for me. Like I can't find any reason to progress in those romhacks. I'll play a level for a while, but it just feels pointless. I mean, if a game has no story, I tend to forget about them, too. Do you remember the contents of those romhacks you've played at all?

You don't necessarily need a story, but you need a scenario. If a game doesn't have a scenario, it's really hard to keep players engaged. It doesn't have to be complicated; it just has to be there. Some games are able to get away without doing this (puzzle games like Tetris and many Namco arcade games) but for the most part, I really like a scenario in my games. And very rarely do I play a game with a decent story and not appreciate it.

I do think that if a story in a game is spectacular, you don't necessarily need spectacular gameplay. Visual Novels in particular can get away with this, since the story is the central focus of the experience. A game like Zero Escape doesn't really have gameplay in the traditional sense most of the time (although that game in particular actually uses narrative as a gameplay device; to elaborate more would be heading into spoiler territory). Also, games like Deadly Premonition are able to greatly garner a fanbase due to its incredibly unique scenario and story. Then there's games that have decent gameplay but have a very memorable story (Spec Ops: The Line, etc.). So I think that story can indeed make a game worthwhile.

Basically, if a game is focused, driven, and immensely successful at a single aspect of its game design that is key to making a game worthwhile (story or gameplay) it can work, so long as the other aspect doesn't take away from what makes the game successful (think Mario Galaxy for gameplay, Zero Escape for story).

Wut? Even your mad logic makes no sense. Zelda has quite a bit of gameplay. Don't Skyrim and (later) Batman games recycle old gameplay too?

No. Not to the degree Zelda does, at least. Skyrim has a remarkably different combat and leveling system from Oblivion from what I've played so far, and it's structured a little differently, hence why I could get into Skyrim but not Oblivion. Arkham Asylum is a Metroid-like game and as far as I can tell is way different from Arkham City, which is an openworld game more akin to Spider-Man 2 on the PS2. The differences in those games are very obvious.

I'll take a good game with a bad story over a bad game with a good story. My top three favorite games all have a relatively strong story, but those games got there because they were fun to play AND had a good story. I've never understood why this battle is still being fought. If you want good game, you play a game. If you want a good story, you read a book or watch a movie. When someone can balance the two is when you have a truly good game though.
