Back in November last year, it was revealed that a change.org petition had got close to reaching its desired target asking that the Star Wars franchise be removed from Electronic Arts.
Now, just a few months later, IGN, Eurogamer and Edge amongst others are reporting that EA may indeed be about to lose that licence with Disney reportedly unhappy with how they have used the licence in the gaming World.
Disney would prefer UbiSoft to take on the Star Wars baton so do people think this would give us Nintendo fans a better chance of seeing the brand flourishing on the Switch?
@Baldspur They should do away with the exclusivity altogether. Licence the franchise on a game-per-game basis. Allow anyone to pitch a concept and develop a Star Wars game.
I don't think I would want to see Activision getting the rights to Star Wars, they're basically EA 2.0 already. And Ubisoft will do some always online DRM nonsense. I'd like to see what Square or Insomniac can do with Star Wars. I could even see one of Sony's studios doing their take on a Star Wars game, but that would have to be a PlayStation exclusive.
I would imagine the Star Wars franchise is better served over multiple consoles rather than just one so would hope that it doesn’t become a Sony exclusive. I would love to see BattleFront on Switch.
@Baldspur If it's on a game-per-game basis, I don't really see the issue. That also means Microsoft could give it a go. And Nintendo (although I find that a bit hard to imagine).
Battlefront is an EA property though. So if another company gets to make a Star Wars game, it won't be Battlefront.
Giving it to EA was a horrible choice to begin with. I personally agree with @Octane that they should license on per game basis instead of teaming up with a single publisher.
Yeah, it was quite clearly a mistake to only allow one publisher to make Star Wars games in the first place. It's been really sad for me, who honestly got into Star Wars because of the games more than the movies. and really misses the type of great console Star Wars games coming out during the Prequel years.

I like this idea absolutely, but it wont happen. Disney doesn't care about Star Wars. They care about profits. They don't really care if quality games are made, they just want to sell toys.

@Heavyarms55 And Star Wars is only profitable as long as it's good. If they ruin the franchise with the next few films and games, most people will stop caring about it.
@Octane Nope, they will just keep rehashing bland ideas and making movies with flashy special effects and no quality writing and it will keep selling and toys will keep selling. Star Wars is too well established, they'd have to absolutely BUTCHER it to end it.

@Heavyarms55 They are already doing so, and ticket sales show that many people think the same way. Even if Solo is a good film, I expect it'll do worse because of TLJ.
Let's put it this way; Star Wars is too important for Disney to screw up completely; films, merchandise, games, etc. EA on the other hand couldn't care less, their license ends in a few years anyway.
@Octane The Solo film wont be good. But it will be good enough. Which is all Disney will do. It will be good enough to turn a profit and let them make new toys. To anyone who wants a quality version of Han Solo's backstory - I point them to the Han Solo Trilogy of books in the "now scraped" Expanded Universe.
