@zkaplan: I think your original explanation was enough, lol. it's not a life-or-death situation, here, and if this game really does make it into production someday, he can always keep Maus as a 'working name' and change it right before release if it becomes an issue.

You're right, Des, sorry to get this turned off on a tangent. I agree, it's much improved with the imaginary line of action. And a hand-drawn platformer already has something great going for it that most other platformers don't and that will automatically attract you an audience, just based on the personal feel. Keep up the good work!

Your second attempt looks much better. Really cartoony. This imaginary line of action really makes a difference.
And also like others said before:
You should draw all the characters that they look like they belong in a single world. Either all detailed and complex or very simple forms with few details. But not mixed. It just doesn't fit.
Just look at an anime character (They're usually very detailed) and a Simpsons character. Now let's ignore the Simpson's color but still they look like they come from two different worlds from the opposite ends of the universe because detailed and simple characters just don't mix.

(I don't watch Anime so I have no idea what that picture's from. Well actually I do, because of the filename )

You are right of course, however, he can use the different world look. He can have some characters literally be from different worlds. He can use more detailed characters to portray a difference between bad and good characters. Stuff like that can work quite well when done in the right places.

A: Two, one to hold the light bulb, the other to rotate the universe.

If you really want to get serious about cartooning, The Simpsons and Anime are useless to you. The Simpsons (while brilliantly written) is one of the most un-cartoony and artistically uninspired cartoons ever. As far as cartoon animation goes, Anime is really not something to look at for inspiration either. It might teach you something about mildly abstract form, but the actual character animations aren't nearly as fluid or exaggerated as a proper cartoon should be.
Watch lots of old Looney Tunes and Disney cartoons if you want to see some seriously good character animations.

I must disagree with Roopa on another matter, though--you should mix characters with simple designs and complex ones. Not only does it give a strong sense of contrast, but it can help define your character's personalities.
For example: let's look at the show Ren & Stimpy. Ren is a fairly complex creature, while Stimpy is made up of simple ovals.
http://analogmedium.com/blog/2007/04/ren%2Band%2Bstimpy%2Blos...
But both of them are very simple looking compared to their friend, Kowalski: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_8fMZ7tW4GU4/SixQHi7g4hI/AAAAAAAAAiI...
To make a character look really big and hulking, you have to fill him in with lots of complex little details--this not only makes him look bigger, but it gives him a contrast to the other characters.
Another good example is the graphic novel, Bone. Bone himself is an exceedingly simple character. But the humans and monsters are quite anime-like in appearance:

Yet somehow, together, they form one perfectly flowing world. Characters don't all have to follow similar principles to make them look as if they belong in a given universe.

I'll keep that in mind about the worlds.

Anyhow I really really liked the name Maus... Can I still call the comic Mauspek? It's a made up word... Anyhow what names do you guys suggest for the little guy? I really like the color green, maybe we can work something into it.

Don't worry, I bet you'll find a name you like even more than Maus. I suggest just waiting for inspiration to tell you, it'll come to you and you'll know that's what he should be called.

Another place to look for inspiration for hand-drawn platformers, if that's what you're aiming at, is The Behemoth. They're a games studio created by the founders of Newgrounds and while their most popular title is the XBox Live Arcade game Castle Crashers, their first release was the beautiful, quirky and all hand drawn Alien Hominid for Gamecube and, in the UK, Game Boy Advance (or was it DS? can't remember). Castle Crashers might be hand drawn as well, but I can't speak to that as I've never played it.

@KaiserGX: the name of 'Maus' for a mouse character in your game could potentially get you into trouble, is all, considering the other 'Maus' is also illustrated.

That book sounds like a madman made it.

it's based on the author's father's actual experiences during the holocaust. no madmen involved.

oh ok.
Anyway, nice drawings Kaiser!

Actually the makers of the Simpsons didn't want the show to be a conventional cartoon.
They wanted it to be a bit more realistic; e.g. no doors bending like they are made of rubber when they are slammed.
When they got the first episode from the animation studio they rejected it because it looked too cartoony. ("This is sh*t." - James L. Brooks)
Because of this most scenes in that episode had to be remade and instead of being the first episode, it became the last episode of the first season.

By the way, Death Note (the picture) is probably my favorate Manga/Anime ever. It is very well drawn/animated and the story is thought through very thoroughly.

I know its not what she meant and its taken out of context of the conversation, but for the record, Adolf Hitler = madman.

@KaiserGX: Your drawings are awesome, best of luck to you with whatever you hope to accomplish. Maus will most likely not be possible as a title/unwise/offensive. I like the pic where he looks like he's doing a Shoryuken, he kinda reminds me of Ryu there, maybe you could call him Myu, but pronounced like how everyone I know calls Ryu in the bastardized American way, Myu [mahy-yoo]!

What is the meaning of life? That's so easy, the answer is TETRIS.

I realize that. That's why I said it probably wouldn't be the best place to look for inspiration--it goes against everything that makes a good cartoon. Except it's written so well that it's still brilliant. I was saying that, if he wants to get into animation, watching classic Looney Tunes, classic Disney cartoons or Spumco cartoons are masterful representations of what cartoons should look and feel like.

Actually a bit of the comedy is a bit Simpsons inspired, but not completely. At least not about celebrities and stuff. More like Homer's antics and the shaking of the fist, the yoink and stuff like "Gym,, what the heck is a gym! walks in OH a GYM! It is no where realistic animation wise as you can see. Looney Tunes is a big plus. I want to try to bring that style of those classics with some minor dialogue. Most of the humor is in the actions but then there's some jokes that I don't know if some people will get. Like one were the mouse is on his laptop trying to connect his newly purchased wireless router, He looks at the PC and says he needs the MAC Addressee. He says, "MAC? BUT I HAVE A PC!" He then goes to return the router and talks to customer service. There's no major plot, it's more like random episodes.

It might be funnier, since Mac/PC jokes are so over done, if he thinks that it means a mailing address. As in: "MAC address? It's the same as my address, you stupid computer! You live in my house!"
I don't know...that seemed funnier in my head
