Nope, in fact I've read the first and second books and enjoyed then. I've seen the movie and boy did I enjoy that to but I didn't find anything in the first or second book that was immoral or bad but I did think that the second book pailled in comparison to the epic scope and tone of the previous book. Furthermore, I was on various message boards and to my horror I read that in the third book people were saying they dumped the books because they kill God and Adam and Eve in the third book. I didn't want believe it so I've never read the third book.

However, my Church's leaders posted an essay online saying that didn't happen in the Amber Spyglass but I still never got around to reading it. The last controversial book I thumbed through was HP and the Order of the Phoenix. I went instead and read Eragon, Funke's Dragon Rider, The Alchemist and Artemis Fowl.

The controversial nature of the book is actually what drew my attention to it. It seems to touch on many intricate issues such as the nature of science, religion, life and death, the universe, philosophy, good and evil, among others, which so far is why I like it so much. It is a book aimed at teenagers, but Pullman is not afraid to touch upon such mature issues, much like Rowling does with Potter. From as far as I can judge at this point, Pullman seems to go one step further, by forcing the reader to reflect these issues upon themselves much more than Rowling does. This, to the dismay of quite a few people, catholics in particular, goes even as far as questioning the existence of God and the Church. Pullman was greatly inspired by the classic poem "Paradise Lost" by John Milton, which is a reimagining of the biblical story of the fall of men, and decicded to flip that around, by making good (in this case God) bad and bad good. The title "His Dark Materials" is from a line from the poem, in which "His" refers to Lucifer.

I'm well aware of Milton's Paradise Lost and I remember reading a excerpt from that in the opening panel of 'The Golden Compass'.

Actually, I am familiar with the religious themes of the Harry Potter franchise. However, the Harry Potter saga isn't Anti-Religious nor is it Anti-Christian as some have interpreted the His Dark Materials Trilogy. In fact, from my own personal view Harry Potter is more Pro-Catholic while His Dark Materials came off as being Pro-Protestant and Anti-Catholic to me as I read the books which is why the members of the leadership of my Church, namely the General Conference of the Seventh Day Adventist Church openly stood in defense of the His Dark Materials Trilogy just as they did for The Lord of the Rings/ Narnia which are blatantly Anglican/Christian although JRR Tolkien was more Catholic than the Anglican (Church of England) C.S. Lewis.

BTW here are links to what my Church's thinkers had to say in defense of 'His Dark Materials' http://cafesda.blogspot.com/2007/11/is-golden-compass-anti-ch...
http://cafesda.blogspot.com/2007/12/golden-compass-part-2.html

In fact in the second link they prove that the books aren't Anti-God. In fact the 'His Dark Materials' was admitted by Pullman himself as an attack on the Catholic Church and against Catholic behavior toward non Catholics during the historical 'Dark Ages' AKA 'Middle Ages' and a supportive tale in defense of Freedom of Religion, Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Thought and so much more.

The daemons in the story represent our own 'Conscience' and it's convictions which were being suppressed in the story as they were 'cut away' from the children. The Catholic Church in the Middle Ages sought to silence the moral and spiritual convictions of all those who would not succumb to her dogmas and they were burned at stake and tortured.

I haven't read the books in about two years although I have pretty much memorized the first few pages of the first book. In fact it is because of the Catholic Church that they never finished the movie adaptions of His Dark Materials although the news media made it out like Hollywood was afraid of 'controversy'. I wish they'd do a video game adaption of each of the books like Sierra Vivendu Universal did for the LOTR Trilogy before the movies were produced.

BTW Rensch did you notice that Korra is riding a polar bear in the trailer for 'The Last Airbender: The Legend of Korra'? I noticed it in a flash and I shouted to my sister 'The Golden Compass'.

Wow, I can't believe this a real topic. Well just wait until Harry Potter rises from the grave. Scientists even know there is a god, even if they don't know they do. Evolution is real, but where did everything originate. The big bang theory doesn't even tell us how the point of singularity was created, it just explains that it once existed. (<:

@ TokyoRed: Haven't actually ever watched the movie or show so I wouldn't know, but it seems like there is inspiration from Pullman there.

I've seriously been eyeballing the Game of Thrones season 1 on blu-ray. I don't have HBO and I'm frankly sick jealous of hearing how chock-full of awesome the series has been so far. I really enjoyed all of the books (even book 4). Some people complain about how it mainly focuses on the secondary characters and my probably-not-too-informed counter has always been: Sheesh, when you've practically killed off all of the main characters, who do you have left to write about?

I haven't read book 5 yet but I'll get around to it eventually.

I think he's referring to Morgan Freeman's series on Discovery Channel 'Through The Wormhole' in which Freeman takes viewers on a journey combining Faith and Science as they discover God in the depths of the cosmos. In the series Freeman shows how Science proves God. It could be either that or Stephen Hawking's recent statements of which WiiAboutU was inspired by in his thoughtful post.

So far Stephen Hawking has said the following: “If you like, you can call the laws of science ‘God,’ but it would be a personal God that you could meet, and ask questions.” That last statement reminds me of the season 2 episode of Regular Show "It's Time".

Nonetheless, lets go even one step further, for matter, energy, space or time cannot actually explain the existence of information. Infomation is and can be only created, and creation infers a mind or intellect. In the way of this, Stephen Hawking in his 1988 book, 'A Brief History of Time' stated that in a complete theory of everything "we would know the mind of God."

Furthremore, Genesis 1:1 says, "In the beginning (time) God created the heavens (space) and the Earth (matter). All three are mentioned in the first words of the Bible.

However, in the Lord of the Rings commentary JRR Tolkien quietly alludes that the Universe itself is the 'Mind of God' much like the great scientist Michio Kaku has done in these past few years.

Sorry TokyoRed, you lost me at the fiction part.

About five years ago, there was a movie about a family that went to live in a relative's house in the woods. The boy used the dumb waiter in the house to get into the attic where he discovered a book which chronicled some of the fantasy beings that lived around the house. Apparently these beings were invisible unless you used a particular instrument to view them or if one of the goblin-like things spit into your eyes. Does anyone remember what the movie was called and if it was based on a book series? I don't remember it being terrible and would like to see a sequel.

I almost thought you were talking about My Neighbor Totoro but that's when I realized you were talking about Nickelodeon's 'The Spiderwick Chronicles'. Yes, I loved that movie to!

Man, that film was better then all the Potter movies after Year 4: The Goblet of Fire.

That's it! Now off to find news on the possibility of a sequel...

Thanks TokyoRed.

disappointed edit: no sequel. I've never read the books but it seems the movie was a combination of all the books so there is no possibility of a sequel based on that series.

I've noticed that Viacom Nickelodeon aren't to keen on starting an ongoing movie trilogy or cycle like Disney has in Pirates of the Caribbean and John Carter or DreamWorks in Shrek, How To Train Your Dragon and Mission Impossible. Still, why do I get the feeling that we might see Rango turned into an ongoing saga? I also wouldn't be shocked if they try taking Avatar The Last Airbender back to the silverscreen again now that Korra: The Last Airbender has garnered a lot of praise at this years past SDCC.

Yet, it is still sad that The Spiderwick Chronicles aren't getting a sequel. That was a great opportunity for Nickelodeon but it looks as if they are done with that pizza. I'm looking forward to seeing Disney finally get Artemis Fowl out of development purgatory. It seems as if they've been working on prepping that movie for the longest!

Have you heard that the third time is the charm? Well in the case of an innocent girl who seems to be continually fleeing the wicked grasp of an evil porcelein skinned Queen only to encounter seven grumpy Dwarves and find her life in peril thanks to a evilly juicy Apple the third time really and truly is the charm!

Untitled

The Walt Disney Company is pushing forward with the final development stages on a campaign that shall take us back into life of Snow White for the third time and this time we see her life through a very different Mirror, Mirror on the wall as the reflection in this magical glass shows us a far east, ninja-focused version of the tale; called "The Order of the Seven."

In Order of the Seven we witness an ancient action prose that will feature a band of dwarven warriors from around the world that, once downtrodden, are galvanized by meeting an English woman in China.
