Something open ended that differs each time you play it, Civilization or perhaps Frontier: First Encounters.
Damn, why didn't I see this? I would've said the same thing...
Can Minecraft be played offline? I was under the impression even the singleplayer was connected to some server. Just asking, really. I played the demo for it recently, it was way more fun than I anticipated...
Minecraft can be played offline in single player.
It'd also have to be my answer honestly. I'm looking through all my favourite games, and though there are many I'd enjoy more, none of the ones that are single player would keep me entertained for as long.
Beyond Good and Evil...........I can't tell you how much I have played that game over and over again and never got bored even compared to Final Fantasy 1-13. I know it is an very short game but you said forever and so far that has been one of the funnest experiences I ever had. You can also have little things to do in the game like..... play fetch with your dog, air-hockey-table, Crash the thief, fight the Snap pictures of exotic creatures, disarm the military people, and even run around the place and stuff. It was so grand and great and only want this next game to be greater. BG&E was so fine tuned as well. It was suppose to be an trilogy on the GCN/X-BOX/PC ( sadly the PS2 version was released. It was said to have poor graphics and lacking in various areas, including the missing costume of the main character.

Quoting this for posterity. After all, it's not every day we get an on-topic post from this guy.
Fire Emblem collection 1990-2015, an unreleased collection that has all Fire Emblem games playable (including If) with all the Japanese exclusives having English translations.
Petit Computer is the most logical choice, even though I've never played it.
However if we take out all the games with level editors/in-game programming, I'd have to go with one of the DKC games, either 2, Returns, or Tropical Freeze. I'd probably end up selecting Returns, but I wouldn't be sure about it
I would have never guessed Weezing was so useful until I played a HeartGold Nuzlocke! My YouTube Channel! Video game related, of course! My Pushmo Levels

Any game with a level editor. Or even a game with an external level editor, if that counts. Super Mario World + Lunar Magic would do pretty well for a few centuries or so.
If that doesn't count... well, dunno. Maybe Wario Land 4, always liked that game.
Thanks, dude. I might have to pick it up. I want to get it on sale, though, just because sales are neat. Too bad Minecraft sales are incredibly rare.
It sucks that Minecraft never goes on sale, but it's honestly completely worth its full price. I'd also say that although you can play it in single player, having your first experiences with the game with friends or just with people you know online makes it a hell of a lot more fun. It's still great fun in single player, but multiplayer for me made the difference between 'great game' and 'awesome moments I'll never forget'.
