I hope someone can put words into my mouth because I am speechless.

♫ Now his life is full of wonder but his heart still knows some fear
Of a simple thing he cannot comprehend
Why they try to tear the mountains down to bring in a couple more
More people, more scars upon the land ♫

Best part of that article:

“Lanzhou’s environment is already really poor, it’s all desolate mountains which are extremely short of water,” a spokesperson told the Guardian via email. “Our protective style of development will divert water to the area, achieve reforestation and make things better than before.”

Sure it will.

Have they actually run out of space to buid cities?! I know they have alot of people but they must be getting kind of despaerate to need to do this. But then agian it doesn't cost very much accroding to our own government. (the U.S that is)

Currently playing: Fire Emblem: Awakening.
Current backlog: Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (part way through) and the Unfinished Swan (unplayed).

Those mountains had it coming. People just couldn't take their high and mighty attitude any longer.

I'll think of something...

Hey @WesCash, I think you meant high and mighty altitude! :D However, I do think it's a shame that the Chinese take the mountains for granite. (boos, hisses, laughs, sneezes)

on a more serious note, this probably isn't as dumb as it sounds. A lot of China's arable land is rice pasture (and they're sure as anything not flattening that). The rest is either the Gobi desert or mountainous regions. Overcrowding is now a pretty big problem, especially since the business district of China is all in either Beijing or Shanghai. In Beijing, which traffic jams can last for days and housing space is really tiny (my grandparents squeeze 5-6 people into their two bedroom apartment, and they're considerably well off), news of a good new city might just be lifechanging.

hopefully.

You don't normally build a city because you want to, you build a city because you have to due to overpopulation.

Those insane barstewards.
