Spirit Tracks -> Majora's Mask -> Four Swords Adventures -> A Link to the Past -> Twilight Princess -> Ocarina of Time -> Oracle of Seasons -> Zelda II: The Adventure of Link -> Phantom Hourglass -> Link's Awakening -> Wind Waker -> Oracle of Ages -> The Legend of Zelda -> Minish Cap

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
Why thank you Adam. It took all my powers of shenanigan deduction to find my way through that mess of a timeline.
my favorite part is the OoA/OoS games...I've never even played them... : D

But Zelda 2 takes place after TLoZ. You've created a timeparadox!

Ugh, the "Zelda Timeline". Watch this video to hear my feelings toward this tangled mess.

Thats what Nintendo says, but thats not gonna stop the theorists from theorizing. Which brings up the question, if there is no timeline, why did they say Spirit Tracks was 100 hundred years after Phantom Hourlgass?
On topic, I've never really thought/cared enough about the timeline to make my own. Although I do believe Minish Cap to be the first.
Oh, I'm just being a contrarian. I like trying to decipher the timeline, too. It seems like all the 3-D Zelda games have a pretty set timeline, I couldn't begin to try to guess the 2-D ones (except for the DS games)
First is Ocarina of Time, then Majora's Mask, then Twilight Princess, then Wind Waker, then Phantom Hourglass, then Spirit Tracks.

Someone mentioned there is no timeline and that Nintendo confirmed this. Actually, Nintendo has repeatedly said they do have a timeline in mind but don't want to share it because people like theorizing it so much. I call baloney. I don't think they know or care for the most part but give little hints just to keep those who do care about it happy. I prefer the simpler, more interesting concept of the legend that changes form as its retold in each generation, maintaining only the basic plot and characters. It's the "Legend" of Zelda, after all, implying that this is something that happened long ago and is being retold to us. Of course, it's also a huge cop out if you like the idea of a timeline! Just thought I'd throw my two cents in.
For those who hate links, apparently someone sent in a timeline theory to Nintendo and got the response "there isn't a true frame or reference or time line possible for the series."

I just thought every Zelda game was sort of its own story, asside from those that are supposed to be connected, like Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, or Zelda 1 and Zelda 2.
Ah, that's odd that Nintendo's customer service / support team would contradict the developers and producers. Of course, that's not exactly the go-to source for canonical information, either. I wouldn't think it'd be official until Aonuma, Miyamoto, or a script writer said this, though I would have to agree with this random rep, nonetheless. Aonuma or Miyamoto has definitely said there is a timeline. I might try to find where I read that later, but too lazy to bother right now.
For everyone who enjoys the Zelda series, I just found an article that makes for an interesting read and has to do with the zelda timeline. The author brings up the question "Has the Zelda timeline restricted advancement?" http://www.zeldainformer.com/2010/01/has-the-zelda-timeline-r...

I just skimmed the article, but I don't really see the point. Windwaker is evidence enough that the timeline doesn't hurt the series at all, if it even exists. Want to do something that wouldn't work within the normal timeline? I know, set it thousands of years apart so that anything could theoretically be explained in all that time between! We've seen Hyrule ripped into two different dimensions, we've seen it flooded, and we've even seen the invention of the locomotive long before the technology should be available if its surroundings are any indication. Nintendo does whatever it wants with the series regardless of the timeline, which I still think is either a hodgepodge afterthought or doesn't exist.
Or maybe the Zelda games take place in MULTIPLE timelines that may not be related to one another
that's what i always thought, anyway, 'cept maybe the more recent games that actually reference what came before (the child link series) :3

@Adam: I agree, I don't really see why the timeline should interfere with how the games turn out, and I think the author even points out in that article that Miyamoto and Aonuma have said that the timeline is more of an afterthought. I posted it up to provoke thought thinking in the minds of the forum goers.

(url=http://www.palaiszelda.com/articles/article62.php) this article explains everything about the timeline and make so much sense. Unfortunately, it's only available in French. Once you read it, there is no way you can think of another timeline.
