If you think you have figured out The Legend of Zelda timeline, give out your thoughts here. We'll happily read over it and see if we can agree on it.
Here is my theory on the timeline: The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past | The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening | The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and Ages | The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass The Legend of Zelda Zelda II: The Adventure of Link | The Legend of Zelda: Four Sword The Legend of Zelda: Twlight Princess |The Legend of Zelda: Four Sword Adventure The Legend of Zelda Wii 2 | The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Track
You may excuse the Phillip-CDi and Link's Crossbow Training for the Chronicle timeline that you attempt to solve. BTW, you can judge other theories..
Ocarina of Time -> The Legend of Zelda -> The Adventure of Link -> A Link to the Past -> Link's Awakening -> Oracle of Seasons/Ages -> Majora's Mask -> Twilight Princess Though I fear I may be mostly wrong.
Thats what Nintendo says, but thats not gonna stop the theorists from theorizing. Which brings up the question, if there is no timeline, why did they say Spirit Tracks was 100 hundred years after Phantom Hourlgass?
On topic, I've never really thought/cared enough about the timeline to make my own. Although I do believe Minish Cap to be the first.

There's no real timeline. Except for a few the games are all games on their own and have nothing in common story wise with the other Zeldas. @hylianhalcyon well Spirit Track is a sequel to Phantom Hourglass so of course there needed to be some info how long after PH it played. Same with Phantom Hourglass. It basically starts pretty much exactly where Wind Waker stops.
That seems rather counterproductive to their whole "there is no timeline" statement. They could have just as easily not said that Spirit Tracks takes place 100 years after Phantom Hourglass.

I haven't played enough Zelda games to come up with one. But I do think there is one, I don't really care what a Nintendo Automatic message fail says. Miyamoto said there was one in 1998 and Eiji Aonuma said there was one in 2002. However, Miyamoto could have been overcome with greed with Zelda and just tossed the Timeline aside, but who knows.
Well, back on topic, from my understanding it goes something like this...
Minish Cap -> Four Swords -> Four Swords Adventure -> Ocarina of Time (Future) -> Link to the Past -> Oracle of Seasons/Ages -> Legend of Zelda -> Adventure of Link Minish Cap -> Four Swords -> Four Swords Adventure -> Ocarina of Time (Past) -> Majoras Mask -> Twilight Princess -> Wind Waker -> Phantom Hourglass -> Spirit Tracks
Links Awakening can potentially go anywhere, though if I had to place it, it would go after Link to the Past.

Yeah but they had to explain why there are characters from Phantom Hourglass/Wind Waker and why it doesn't play in the same region where Phantom Hourglass plays etc.
Yeah I understand that. But I still think that if they really were backing the statement "there is no timeline" that they could have come up with an excuse to why there are similar characters in it. They could have gone the Majora's Mask route and said that it is set in an alternate reality or something.

I could attempt to solve the timeline, but I have a life! =D
Yeah serously
But in all seriousness, there really is no timeline in the series. You literally cannot connect the games together and have it all make sense. How about a Metroid topic of the same concept of this. Much more intriguing in my opinion..
zelda 1 (nes)- it started it all zelda 2 (nes)- i remember sumwhere it said it was a direct sequel link to the past- started the whole master sword thing ocarina- continued the master sword thing majora's- direct sequel to ocarina twilight- cuz of windwaker windwaker- hyrule is flooded phntom hrglass- windwaker sequel.
Someone mentioned there is no timeline and that Nintendo confirmed this. Actually, Nintendo has repeatedly said they do have a timeline in mind but don't want to share it because people like theorizing it so much. I call baloney. I don't think they know or care for the most part but give little hints just to keep those who do care about it happy. I prefer the simpler, more interesting concept of the legend that changes form as its retold in each generation, maintaining only the basic plot and characters. It's the "Legend" of Zelda, after all, implying that this is something that happened long ago and is being retold to us. Of course, it's also a huge cop out if you like the idea of a timeline! Just thought I'd throw my two cents in.

Metroid isn't needed as it actually has backstories. Zelda, has its groups of games that have their own storylines parting from previous games. OoT > MM, WW > PH > ST, OoA = OoS. What Zelda does do greatly is offer many different stories that all make sense. I think most of the handhelds are an exception for the lack of Ganon.
