So, are you having trouble with a boss, and want to get helpful tips from fellow NL users? This is the thread for you!

Of course, I wouldn't have started this thread if I didn't have a question myself, so here goes:

I'm currently playing Dragon Quest IV, and am at the part of the story where I have to take part in a tournament. One of my opponents is the Abominable Snowman, and for the life of me I can't figure out how to beat it. Every turn it creates fake clones of itself, and there's no way to determine which one is real, and which ones are the fakes. Is there some trick to this that I'm missing, or is it really just draw of the luck whether or not you actually hit it?

For the record, the character you have to use in the fight can't use any sort of magic, the only items you can use are healing items, and I've tried to see if any of the Abominable Snowmen are animated slightly differently (to give some sort of "hint"), but to no avail.

It's just luck. There might be some strange algorithm that the internet has figured out, but I've always just guessed.

The original version had no animations, other than the tongue move when you miss. Fun fact... in the NES version he (it?) is named Linguar... no idea how I remember that.

@RR529 you should've posted this on a gaming thread man. To me, this topic is about talking stuff outside of gaming.

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

Well if that's the case, maybe I'll just have better luck next time

Thanks for the reply.

Just as an update, I did end up beating the boss the last time I played

Of course, anyone can still use this thread to ask their own boss related questions. Thanks to those who helped.

If you don't know, his first weak spots are not a part of his body. Once those are gone, start shooting him. Crouch jumps are vital for that fight.

Hello, all. I'm now on DQV, and am needing a tip again.

I'm fighting that meddlesome Sabercat for the people of Hay, and this thing just won't go down. All my party members only do about 10 damage apiece to it, and this is despite the fact they are equiped with the best equipment you can get at this point, and are adequately leveled (the other, normal, enemies in the dungeon are almost laughably weak compared to my party).

Due to that, I don't think you're supposed to beat it in the traditional sense (the boss itself isn't overly aggressive either, and when it does attack, it does similarly miniscule damage to my party), and I'm thinking I have to do something special (like use some sort of special item) to win, but I can't think of what it could possibly be (I didn't die, mind you, it's just that after 15 minutes without any side getting anywhere in the fight, I figured something was up). I know that this is likely to be a "certain special sabercat", which makes the idea that you're not supposed to kill it more likely.

Maybe @Mode7 knows what to do here as well?

@RR529

haha I think I got you covered... it's been a while since i've played V, but didn't you get some sort of ribbon? ... or something like that that the cat will recognize from the past. I think you use it in battle. My memory is a bit hazy on that one, though.

You're really making me want to break out those games again. It's been too long.

Ah, I forgot about the ribbon! I'll try that next time then, thanks!

As for the games themselves, IV was the first I played, & I fell in love with it so much that I had to jump right into the next one when I finished, lol.

You need to pair the Final Attack Materia with the Phoenix Materia. That's all I know.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

You'll like VI too then. I must also recommend IX, which isn't a remake and was built from the ground up for the DS. Actually, just play them all haha.

I've never played III or VII, but I imagine they're also good. I just wish the VII remake and X would come to the west...

Well, I'm playing the Android versions, and they don't have VI, VII, or IX yet, so I can't get them, but I'm sure they'll eventually release them. So far, Android has I, II, III, IV, V, & even VIII interestingly enough.
