Here we can talk about traditional board games like Chess, Shogi, Checkers, etc., as well as more commercial board games like Monopoly, Sorry!, Scrabble, Battleship, etc.

Discuss your history of the game(s) as a kid, how you may still enjoy it today, and heck, if you know of any good digital versions on consoles, mobile devices, or computers, go ahead and mention them!

I'll go ahead first.

  • When it comes to traditional board games, I'm most familiar with Chess & Checkers, as back in middle school, me and a bunch of friends would always gather in the library & play a few games before we had to head to class (as well as a few rounds of Yu-Gi-Oh! occasionally, though I guess that's a topic for a different thread). We played Chess the most though. That's been years ago now, and the most experience I get these days is a rare round or two on a PC.
  • As for more commercial games, like most people, I've probably had the chance to try out a lot as a kid (I distinctively remember playing Connect Four, Life, & Monopoly, though never able to finish that last one, lol), but I really remember that my family played a LOT of Sorry!, especially at my grandmother's place, we'd always get it out during New Year's Eve (as well as the card game Uno), and played it until the ball dropped (though this turned into Poker when we got older...).

I decided to download an app called Chess Free on my tablet, and it's pretty crappy...

It has a simple but polished look that works well, but my goodness, it doesn't let you win.

  • One game, one of the CPU Rooks had my King in Check, but it wouldn't allow me to use my Queen to take out said Rook (I was forced to move the King, and the Rook took my Queen instead). Later on in that same game, my King was again in Check, and I was allowed to take out the Checking piece with a Pawn, meaning there's no reason I shouldn't have been able to use my Queen in the earlier incident.
  • I actually managed to get the upper hand in that game, and I had a Rook & Knight cornering the CPU King, when the game suddenly declared the match a Draw due to "repetition". (That happened in the next match as well, when I was about to corner the King. Once again in my most recent game, my two Rooks & a Knight were cornering the CPU King, and once again it declared it a Draw, though without giving a reason...).

I'll probably try finding a better Chess app.

I've replaced the previously mentioned Chess app with a different one called A 3D Chess Game.

Uninspired name aside, this one is actually really good. It features really nice, polished 3D graphics, and you can even lightly customize the color of the pieces beyond the typical black & white if you so choose (though I personally like the traditional colors). Even the taken pieces sit along the outside of the board, and you can rotate the camera as you see fit, giving you the best view of the board at all times (I opt for an easy to view overhead shot). I've also never had a single problem when it comes to making moves (it works really smoothly). It doesn't have online, but it's free, so I really can't complain (it does have local multiplayer for two players on the same tablet though).

I'd really recommend it if you like Chess, or want to give it a try (it has a rule guide, I believe).

Sorry for the double post, BTW.

Chess is the best. Others.....not so much.

I guess the problem with board games is that its more of multiplayer that of single player.

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why
