Topic: Biggest Surprise of the Year?

I forgot the most obvious one. Ubisoft DOMINATING EVERYTHING. I should have noticed this sooner and Ubisoft's been a major gaming company for a long time but they single handedly saved E3 this year and used it to show how they would dominate.

Seriously, at this point in time, Ubisoft has one of the biggest casual gaming series in the world (Just Dance), one of the most highly praised games of the year (Far Cry 3), one of the top selling hardcore games of the year (AC3), a game single handedly making survival horror and 3rd party Nintendo titles relevant at the same time (ZombiU), a platformer that many are already calling superior to a Mario platformer launch title (Rayman Legends) and have one of the most hyped games of next year that could possibly be the best GTA-like game ever made (Watch Dogs). This is Ubisoft's world, and we're just living in it.

@kkslider I also second Ubisoft being quite awesome this 2012. As the very least, then win the award for being the most diverse publisher of 2012.

Kid Icarus: Uprising is my unexpected GOTY. The game was so unexpectedly awesome in nearly every way that I can't help but love it unconditionally. Yeah, the controls weren't suitable for everybody, but they worked for my and everything else deserves my attention for being absolutely great.

Torchlight II is also engrossing me to no end. Mechanically the game is utter genius, with almost nothing making me think that the game is wasting my time in any way, shape, or form. The story is nothing more than bland, but I mainly play games for the gameplay and TL2 handles that masterfully.

Biggest surprise for me was not only that the Walking Dead games were excellent but they managed to avoid going the obvious route and turning the franchise into a lame survival horror or FPS cash in.

Unfortunately, I knew that Little Inferno would be awesome the second I heard about it/saw the teaser trailer, so it being my GotY wasn't a surprise. However, the game itself blew away my expectations in a way I absolutely didn't see coming.

Out of all the indie titles I played this year, Little Inferno is definitely my favorite

Yay LZ! I always knew we would agree on something.

The announcement of Little Inferno alone set my expectations to an unreachable degree. The game itself didn't reach those expectations, but it still is one of my favorite games of 2012.

Another was Kid Icarus: Uprising. For some odd reason, I had low expectations for this. Color me surprised the day I woke up mad early to get it.
