Topic: Best way to unlock extras?

I'd love your opinion again!
What do you think about games allowing people to unlock extras (sound test, more levels, etc) by earning coins through playing, as opposed to locking those extras to achievements that must be completed? Which one do you find more enjoyable?

What makes it difficult to decide for me is that players that are less skilled may never unlock certain items if they can't complete the achievements. Using coins would allow anyone to unlock things if they played enough times, but might take the challenge out of it

Any feedback is appreciated!

@shaneoh Nice idea! I hadn't considered that. What if the game is not story based though? Like a racer or fighter.

Some games let you choose to go either way. For instance by collecting a LOT stuff instead of attaining bonuses you get from skilled performance.

So something along the lines of having the main unlock method be achievements, but then allow players to buy the unlock using coins they've earned during regular play if they prefer to?

Personally I think there should be things that only the best players can unlock, but that they shouldn't be anything too significant - just shiny bragging-rights rewards, like maybe a gold car that has the same stats as some other, easily obtainable car. It's just nice to get something for being really good. I can understand why you might not want to do this, though - some players tend to feel like they have to get everything, no matter how pointless.

Fun is better and more important than challenge. I would use coins instead of achievements. At the same time you could put achievements that give a big amount of coins at once so the ones that can beat it have their special reward anyway

I used to be a ripple user like you, then I took The Arrow in the knee
