Topic: Best "Tales of" Game?

Looking into trying more of the Tales of series of action-RPGs. So far I've only played Tales of Phantasia, Tales of Symphonia, and Tales of Vesperia. Symphonia devolved into a total mashfest and it got old pretty quick, but it was otherwise enjoyable. Vesperia was pretty much Symphonia with a slightly different story, and the combat was even worse. Phantasia was great in just about every aspect, though. Especially the combat, which doesn't allow for button-mashing, and actually requires skill and strategy in order to win. Are there any others in the series that has combat as good as that?

I still think Phantasia is the best, although I wanna try Symphonia too.

I have played Phantasia, Symphonia, Symphonia Dawn of a New World, Abyss and Legendia. My favorite really is Tales of Symphonia for Gamecube.

From what I've seen, I think I'll stick with the 2D games in the series. They get too mashy in the 3D games. Actually, even Tales of Destiny 2 gets a little too mashy, but hey, I'm not playing one without also playing the sequel.

Tales of the Abyss is one of the best PS2 RPGs I've ever played. I highly recommend it to anyone who can find it.

Yeah, I might get that one just for the story. It's a bit too expensive right now, though.

Graces is apparently one of the best, if not the best, I so hope it gets localised..... which is sadly unlikely:(

Maybe Dragon Quest 10 will be so successful with Nintendo's help that it will encourage other publishers to bring Wii RPGs to the west. I have been hoping for Graces, too, though I haven't played any Tales games yet. Keep thinking about Symphonia 2, but I don't know that I want to start with a sequel.

Come on, friends,

The Story is oh so good. The humor is just everywhere throughout the game. I remember laughing a lot. The graphics are great too and it's fairly lengthy. It's been years since I played it on PS2 but I truly do recommend you getting it.

The only problem (besides the price) is that it seems a bit too mashy, much like Vesperia and Symphonia. Still, I put up with Symphonia's predictable plot and mashy gameplay. I think I can put up with more mashy gameplay for a story that's actually good.

Yeah, apparently they added a side-step and an action guage that needs to recharge once it runs out, effectively elimitating button-mashing. I'd totally get it if it comes to the U.S.

I haven't, and I don't think anyone else here has. I did see some gameplay videos, and all 3 of them look pretty good. Tales of The Tempest is more like Tales of Rebirth - not my thing, but certainly worth it for fans of that game. Tales of Innocence seems a little better, especially if you're a fan of the 3D games. I honestly thought it was a Wii game for a moment (a crappy looking Wii game, but for a DS game, it's pretty freakin' purty). Tales of Hearts has more in common with the 2D games, such as Tales of Destiny 2. I'll probably import that one, it looks like a lot of fun.

If you're a big fan of the series, I think it would be worth it to import at least of them. I know there's some GameFAQ translations if you need them, but that kinda limits the "on the go" factor, unless you print it out. (you better have a lot of ink )
