The Fox and the Hound was my personal favorite. Robin Hood also holds a special mention. I enjoyed many of the other "usual" picks as well (Aladdin, Lion King, Fantasia, etc.).
Side note: I know Ferngully wasn't Disney but I enjoyed it just as much as the classic Disney animated films... and Tim Curry is awesome.
As a self-processed Disney nut I find myself drawn to this topic like honey to a bee~
1. Beauty and the Beast Amazing film beautifully put together with fantastic animation and top notch songs. The film flows so well and the songs envoke enough emotion without slipping into the sickly sweet territories that so many cartoons verge into. Check out the subtle change of the Beast from animal-like to almost-human and Gaston's opposite hilarious-foil to manipulative warmonger
2. Treasure Planet Incredibly underated film that suffered from some poor Marketing and being the follow up from the disastrous Atlantis. Plays with some fun ideas and one of the few Disney films to have a protagonist with some real issues and a villian who isn't simply "evil". Jim's flashback and his relationship with Long John Smith will make anyone weep (maybe). Gets maybe a tad too action packed towards the end
3. Lady and the Tramp A film based on a story written by one of Walt's storymen, Lady and the Tramp has a fantastic contemporary soundtrack and a story that manages to keep steam throughout. Lady's Naive personality is charming throughout
4.Tarzan Tarzan is a breathtaking movie, with some great action and romance plus CGI use that doesnt get in the way of the 2D animation, the Phil Collins soundtrack really suits it. However the romance does edge worryingly close to being too sweet.
6. Aladdin A lot of people love Aladdin, and it is a great film and Robin Williams as Genie is great but it hasnt grown as well on me as the other films above. Whole New World is still one of the best musical scenes ever despite that
7. Lion King Lion King is a great film: but it doesnt rate as high on my list as some may consider. Its a lovely film, great soundtrack and story, But loses points for being almost a Disney version of Osamu Tezuka's "Jungle Emperor/ Kimba the White Lion" without credit and a iddy bit of plodding in the plot. Still deserves to be here however, pair it with Lion King 3 for giggles
8. A Goofy Movie It's Goofy, in a movie
...but seriously. Despite not really being considered part of the Disney Classics set, Goofy movie is a fantastic film that doesnt sugar coat the Teen to Parent relationship. Includes awesome music. Pair with Extremely Goofy Movie for added awesome
9. 101 Dalmations Delightfully quirky and british, remains as close to the book as can be managed in the time available and Cruella is one of the best villains ever. Also highly reccomend the original book
10. Snow White I cant have a top 10 and NOT add Snow white: first animated feature film ever: an amazing achievement when only 5 years before release cartoons were just stings of gags put together with crudely drawn characters. Disney wouldn't be what it is now without it
BTW Note: I believe Brave Little Toaster was actually outsourced, its technically not a Disney movie but Disney Distributed it. Fun factoid: Brave Little Toaster was originally pitched to Disney by John Lasseter when he worked there prior to his Pixar years, Disney rejected it and a bunch of Lassetters friends produced it
@RebeccaGunn Good call with A Goofy Movie. That's very under-rated. And I'm going to have to see Hunchback again. I only saw it once when it first came out, and I was really little so I don't remember it at all.
