Topic: Be There Any Shakespeare Fans?

I've recently taken a renewed interest in the annals of Sir William Shakespeare thanks to the new Shakespeare expansion NEXON rolled out for the online MMORPG Mabinogi. I find Romeo and Juliet, Othello, Hamlet, Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing and The Merchant of Venice to be my personal favorites. Personally I didn't realize that Hamlet, Macbeth and The Merchant of Venice were actually true stories; You can imagine what a happy surprise that was for me.

So be there any Shakespeare fans among us? What thinkest thou of the great bards tales?

I loves me some Shakespeare. I haven't read all his stuff, not necessarily by choice, but I like everything I have. He pretty much created the English language.

I've read Macbeth and liked it well enough.

From the few plays of his that I read for the English classes back in high school, I thought they were good.

Of the plays I've been forced to read in school, Macbeth was pretty cool but Romeo and Juliet is pretty bad.

Yeah Shakespeare is pretty good. I go the Canberra Theatre twice a year to watch Australia's most famous Shakespeare company perform various works. Also gives me brownie points with my lady because she is a Shakespeare nut!

It doth make my heart spring with joy to see that thee, my fellows in this fine Mushroom Kingdom Tavern ahem, forum are Shakespeareans! Let us pour fore one another a glass of your finest Apple Cider and let us breake forth into merry gay songs whilst the Silver Moon abathe us in her shimmering silk light and the luminaries afresh from the hand of Providence shine in their innocence from the celestial skies!

Okay, so enough with the Grande Olde English poetry, but ah have you guys read any of these?

Guys if you really want to kick things up a notch please try the Mabinogi Shakespeare expansion pack, its free with no charge and it's so much fun. It follows Shakespeare's poetry to the absolute letter. I'm really enjoying it. So far I'm on Act 1, Scene V and I'm loving it. BTW have of read those Shakespeare mangas? I've never seen them at my bookstores so I shall try to encourage my library to get them.

I would love to know if there are any Shakespeare anime as well.

So what's wrong with having the writings of Shakespeare, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien or L. Frank Baum in manga, anime or comic form?

I'm a big otaku geek and I love all things manga and anime related. I know of lot of people who've become big fans of The Wizard of Oz and The Lord of the Rings thanks to the manga and anime adaptions of The Hobbit and The Wizard of Oz by Japanese companies. Even Marvel is giveing X-Men, Iron Man, Spider Man and Fantastic Four the anime twist.

Anime and Manga are fast overtaking the West and there is even a new television show called "American Otaku". Instead of dumping the dirt on this new effect one would think that you'd be happy that many people who'd never give a penny to read the wondrous works of Shakespeare are being reached by the medium of manga.

I know many young adults and teens who at one time loathe the Shakespearen writings and who at times even skipped their literature assignments to avoid reading Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and Shakespeare but now thanks to the manga adaptions of the aforementioned authors they've come to really like and appreciate them. Manga has a special commanding power and it is a marvelous medium to reach many.

Even the world of faith is being advanced by the story telling medium from The Land of the Rising Sun. Many people who wouldn't even set foot in a Church in the past have confused to taken an interest in faith and Christianity thanks to the new blazing path that has been made by manga and anime.

Two new examples of this are the amazing stories on the radio, internet and television news of how "Manga Messiah" and "Manga Bible" are causing young adults, seniors and children to take a deeper interest in the faith based realm and even attend Churches and in some cases these same people admit that at one time in their lives they'd never any cared about religion and the hereafter.

With all of this in mind, I think it quite good that manga is effecting every aspect of our lives.

Because it's like chicken and ice cream. Two excellent things that just don't work when mixed together. I'd sooner put my tongue through a meat slicer than read a manga adaptation of Shakespeare.

Overselling manga much, Tokyored? If you like it, then super for you. That doesn't make it any less of a bastardization of classic works.

I love Shakespeare.

I've seen those Manga Shakespeare volumes on shelves and I couldn't be less interested. The best way to enjoy Shakespeare is to watch it in performance by a troupe who understands it. There's nothing quite like watching a Shakespearean comedy at The Globe in London. The next best thing is the script itself, preferably with a guide at hand.

I hate that. The west is losing its realistic style for an wannabe-anime-big-shiny-eyes look that ends up being amateurish in my eyes. Leave the manga/anime to the Japanese because they do it best. That detailed, sophisticated graphic novel look from the west is extremely appealing to me and I much prefer it to wannabe anime.

Well, I'm not trying to sell manga lol, but I am really interested in why some people find it to be a "bastardization" in regard to classic literature being adapted into a comic or manga/ manhwa. I know that a first there was an uproar when Marvel announced they'd be producing a series of comic adaptions of The Wizard of Oz and now all of a sudden those same people are quite as a mouse and the comics are selling quite fine.

I'm not annoyed with you guys about your position on manga and Shakespeare. I simply would like you guys to give me a sound and intelligent explanation and that is all. Other than that we can move on and continue discussing Shakespeare's original works and leave the manga behind us. There is no need for arguing or fighting over the matter. I'm open minded and want to keep things cool and civil, after all, we're individuals with different tastes and opinions, likes and dislikes.

To be quite honest I'd like to find some good movie adaptions of Shakespeare's Hamlet, Macbeth and Othello, if you guys know of any please let me know.

@ HolyMackerel, well what do you think of anime-inspired Western productions like Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Samarai Jack or Young Justice?

I sit in the boat of people that like Manga, and like Shakespeare, but will never read a Manga adaptation of Shakespeare.

If for no other reason than Shakeapear wrote plays, not books. Manga is a very poor attempt to visualize Shakespeare when compared to a theatre performance.

There are some very rare cases where a Shakespeare play has worked in a non-theatre setting (Romeo + Juliet, for instance), but in the other 99.999999% of cases... Well, if Shakespeare were still alive he would never sell his IP to a manga writer, let's put it that way.

you say it's great that manga is reaching out to so many people, I find it awful that so many people are too lazy to pick up a damn book or go out and watch some of the most renowned plays ever written be performed by a proper cast. the dumbing down of literary works of art for popularity's sake (as opposed to abridgements for necessity's sake or parodies of the original works) is a horrible thing IMO, and furthermore, if you didn't want us to discuss the manga, why did you even bring it up?
