This thread could get pretty long. If I have to choose one, it's definitely Republican, but I'm personally not really against a lot of Republican things like outlawing pot, and I don't really care about gay marriage...hey, why not? I'm a semi-religious person, but let people have their way if they want. Besides, the Bible can be interpreted in different ways on the subject. But I agree with the Republican stance much more than Democrat, especially on gun control and abortion. I really did like McCain, and it's a shame so many people were too ignorant to pay attention to what he was about and focused on past leadership. But, I'm going to stop there, because I do not want to get into a political discussion. Generally, I'm not a very politically outspoken person. Do your thing. I don't really care. Just don't bother me. Please, no one post a rebuttal to this. I'm just stating my beliefs. You have your own. That's why we have the polls. Arguing on a thread does no good.

I don't believe this left/right paradigm. I think it's bull**** since both Republicans (conservatives) and Democrats (liberals) obey the same masters so my advice would be not to vote and not to support them. This way you won't be responsible for the mess. And don't riot! This would encourage the creation of a police state where you have no freedom. Just my 2c.

Republicans scare the crap out of me. No offense.

I couldn't bring myself to vote Labour right now, what with the smarmy unelected Brown. But I could NEVER vote conservative, my mother taught me well.

@Machu: Democrats scare the crap out of me. Only a little offense.

I could NEVER vote liberal, my mother taught me very well.

There, you see what happens with this sort of thread? I like them better when they DO turn into discussions, but I won't reply to grenworthshero's post as per his request. Which is a real shame, because he has some great discussion material there, especially the way I agree with some of what he said but not all. Anyway...go conservatives!

@Stuffgamer1: I'd love to discuss politics with you, but I'm on a game website, taking on the persona of Machu, so as to have some fun. I do NOT want to talk politics, I'll save that for real people, no offense.

I just yaaawned a really big yawn btw.

i think there is no good party, call it republican or democrat (this is for every place in the world)

it's just a race to the power, everybody is ready to wave the flags of Peace, Rights and Life, but when they are in power, they forget all those good things, and walk over poor people's back.

of course if there is some convinced politician follower here (or related of some small politician) will come and tell me, this is the death of the democracy, eventually democracy is also who doesnt believe in any party, not to set for one side.

i don't trust the modern politicians, who CASUALLY all end up having million of dollars, lands, and villas, after (if not before) they have been presidents, senators, etc

i want to be a politician too, so at the age of 50 i have my 5 million dollars empire (empire, eh eh eh)

you see a big politician earning 10-20-50.000 dollars x month, who claims he wants to let all Old People have a decent pension,
in my situation, we have old people earning 400 dollars x month (not being able to do many things)

so how can a person earning 10-20-50.000 dollars x month (with all the free stuff they have - cars-bodyguars-free flights-free meal in expensive restaurants-new expensive dresses, mobile traffic, free flights for all the family, unlimited gasoline) be at the service of who is poor or who gets 400$ x month ?

LETS GIVE A NORMAL SALARY TO A POLITICIAN (is it a matter of salary or of rights and better society ?????????????????????????? )
and you will let 10 OLD Pensioned People have a decent Pension ! (not 400 dollars x month but lets say 800!)

NO WAY, i keep my huge salary and free gifts, and you old crappy believer keep your misery (how politics works)

then someone stands up saying BUT THEY MUST DO A HUGE WORK ! (is it as huge as normal teachers, or researchers ?)
START EARNING LIKE THEM ! WITHOUT ANY SPECIAL FREE GIFTS (if you wanna earn a lot, you will pay all the things you spend, if you earn NORMAL you will have some BENEFITS !, SOME!) no, they earn a lot and they h ave all the benefits of the planet

it's all a lie and a joke
a disgusting one

the people who skips the Camera-Parliement or Senate Sessions for more than 40-60% of times that they should be there discussing problems
(and gets paid anyway)
if we skip our workplace 40% of the times, we will end up unemployed

Both the Democrats and Republicans are more conservative than both of Australia's major parties. To the point that the idea of spending MORE money on public hospitals and giving MORE money to University students to make tertiary education more affordable by INCREASING taxes for people with higher incomes are all things that the majority of Australians have no problem with. If you suggested that sort of policy in the US someone would say "communist" and you would never make it to office.

Not only that one of the major issues at the last election was whether or not the next government was going to commit to cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Something that one side of politics is half-pushing, the other side is divided on and the "greens" are trying to put into high gear (it going through is somewhat of a formality now). If we could only kill our antiquated game classification system (more like game censorship system) this would be a pretty cool country.

Seeing as I'm not an American it kinda doesn't apply to me but if I were I'd be a democrat, even though none of them really apply to me. On a political compass both republicans and democrats are in the upper-right section, even republicans are more so than democrats (republicans are like a stone's throw from being neo fascist really). Me on the other hand, while being ever so slightly to the left of the center axis, is WAAAAAY down in the liberal/fascist scale. So basically I'm a centric super-liberal. Essentially so liberal that it's kinda meaningless to fit me on a left/right scale at all. Which btw is not anarchy, that's located in the bottom left corner, and for the record Stalinism is in the upper left corner. What's in the bottom right corner I don't know, probably someone like Bernard Madoff.

Political-party-wise, I'm pretty screwed up:
I believe in small government and that people should take care of themselves, not expect hand-outs from the government (Republican)
I do not believe in a god (this view generally does not fall into line with conservative republicans AT ALL)
I am pro-choice (Democrat)
I believe in fiscal responsibility (Republican)
etc etc. I guess I'd say I'm not really leaning towards any one party. I kind of wish a new party could come to power because I'm completely fed up with what this country has to offer right now with politics.

I think political parties have pretty much failed. Instead of working on solutions they bicker like children with lies. Besides name one politician thats not a complete liar or thief. Don't believe me ? Then your naive.

Magi, if I were you, I would just lump myself in with Republicans. Economics is really the biggest impact political parties have. The laws on abortion are not going to change any time soon, regardless of the absurd way politicians like to use the issue to rally the ignorant. In fact, I know someone who feels very much like you do. Everything about her screams liberal, and yet she votes Republican.

But yea, I agree with your last statement one hundred per cent.

I'm not sure it's healthy to reduce either party to such a blanketing yes/no, to be honest. Vote for the better candidate, because, surprise surprise, the "better candidate" isn't always going to come from the same party. Shocking statement, I know!

It gets my goat a little because this whole, "I would never vote blank!!! I'm a different-blank, and I'll vote different-blank til the day I die!!!" just reinforces borders and dividing lines that aren't really there. Think in terms of the particular candidate and the next four years, not some world-history-spanning allegiance to some perceived notion of "what must be and therefore must always be."

By saying you'd never vote liberal, does that mean that you think Richard Nixon would have been a better president than John F. Kennedy? (I'll give you a hint...they both did become president, and he wasn't.) Bob Dole would have been a better president than Bill Clinton? Alfred "Who the Heck Am I?" Landon over Franklin Roosevelt?

Of course it works the other way around, too. I'm a registered Democrat, but America's needs aren't the same every four years, and the major candidates are not always the same either. Bush Sr. was a much better option than Michael Dukakis, Dwight Eisenhower, from what I understand (admittedly littler) was a pretty rational choice over Adlai Stevenson.

Any choice you make among specific candidates I can get behind, and I can respect. But disregarding anybody on the grounds that they're not of the right party...sorry. That doesn't work for me. Neither the Republicans nor the Democrats are the same party today that they were 10 election cycles ago, and they won't be the same 10 election cycles from now. Don't fence yourself into a stopped-clock mindset where you're just hoping to be right twice a day.

Nixon was a great presiden CB - your boy Kenedy got u.s. INTO Viet Nam, your boy Johnson got u.s. farther in, and Nixon got u.s. OUT!

Nixon had great foreign policy, advocated REASONABLE! public health care, and knew the ppl of his country. He led the country out of some crazy times....

Nixon...was a great president? MY GOD. Please be kidding. Without going into a long diatribe against many of his policies (I'll admit he wasn't ALL bad, but close) Watergate is more than enough to remove him from that consideration. That, and his racism. And sexism. And anti-semitism.

To get back on target, I'm not registered with either party, but my views probably fit more with the Democrats than anything else, especially on social issues. I'm also a card carrying member of the ACLU (honestly, everyone should be, no matter your political standing).
