Topic: Anybody Else Getting Tired of Talking About The Business Side of Gaming?

Because I know I am. I mean, it was fun for a good long while, but I think I've had my fill of it. I'm not a business person, at all. I'm not an advertiser, I'm not a salesman, I'm not a business analyst, and I certainly have no intention of ever running a business. So now I finally have to ask: Why should I discuss so much about the business side of gaming? Why should I care? I'm just a gamer and I just want to play games, and talk about my experiences with other fans of gaming. I'm not saying I'll stop entirely, nor do I think others should either, but I do feel that a lot of us, myself included, are getting a little too invested in something many of us have no intention of ever being a part of. I guess what I'm saying is....I kinda want my sig to be ironic and not actually true, so I think I'll back off the business talk, and have been trying to for a while. Just thought I'd bring it up.

Probably, but I felt a topic would be more fitting than just dumping it in the now-seldom-used chat thread...

The reason people care is because the business side of gaming will dictate what kind of games we'll be able to play and it'll usually alter the kind of games we used to love, depending on how business trends in the industry are. So it's not pointless and in the end we talk about it because we enjoy playing videogames

I'll admit that's why I did it for a while, but still, what's talking about it going to do about it? I mean, outside of the usual "I want to buy this/don't want to buy this" type of stuff? I've gotten into some pretty intense discussions about stuff most of us don't really understand, come to half-baked conclusions, only for us to talk about similar stuff just days later and the cycle continues. I mean, I can't speak for those I've been discussing with. Maybe they do want to get into business? Maybe they already are in it in some way? I know several people want to make their own games. Fine. I guess it's not totally pointless if you're just trying to understand something that could very well help you in the future.

I'm not one of them, though, so these discussions just leave me feeling more and more empty. I can't help but feel I'm not the only one, too.

too busy making my way down my list of personal games to cater to it...
most of the people that are doing this dont understand business in the first place, and it shows.
they are just complaining about what they want in disguise.
i think some of them have issues.

If Nintendo took the time to read our totally important opinions and concerns, I'm sure their business would improve by at least -30%.

Read some of the threads on vgchartz.com forums. It really makes you wonder what kind of fractal kernel of meaning these people get from caring about this stuff. You see something like a thread entitled "Why the PS4 will sell 15 million before 2014.". My only response to that is to wonder what on earth is going on in these people's lives that has pushed them into thinking that that question is something they should start a thread about. I'm almost convinced it's nothing good.

I never got involved in it because I felt that way all along. Don't mind if others discuss it, but I think it's kind of disappointing that (aside from the most popular, hot games) there isn't more focus on talking about games themselves/game concepts/self-imposed challenges. I thought that might have been my imagination, but this thread makes me feel like that isn't the case.

I usually reply to business type articles or forums with a sceptical note and define whatever I read into something game related. aka, sales down low? ok, new console is here sooner. Or sales momentum for such and such game? Ok, lots of people online to play with, for instance.

I'm not worried about business stuff anyway. If the games are fun - which they are - I'm totally doing fine.

So to me, I'd be more than happy to see sales, business and whatnot articles become a backpage item, never to be confronted with again.

I think it's mostly to do with people wanting their favourite console to succeed. People like to propose ideas that would help their console manufacturer be top dog, hence all the business talk and armchair analysts out there. I like to play games (of course) but I also like to keep up to date with what games are coming out and how the companies are doing. Therefore I'm not really tired of business talk about the gaming industry (it can be interesting sometimes!).

However, I feel that we should tone down a bit, as I feel arguments are what ruins this business talk and there are some people out there who will talk about games all day and never actually play their favourite console. We can all be a bit guilty of being a bit of a know it all at times, but the best idea is to enjoy your games and don't get mad at others who enjoy the games and/or developers/publishers you don't like.

We're going on a bear hunt! We're going to catch a big one!

I find it interesting to see how well my favorite companies are doing financially. I think the "Stocks" app on my iPhone is set to check Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, NCSoft, etc. even though I don't own any stock in any of them.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

It's no different than going to a sports forum and seeing discussions about trades, fan attendance, spectator experience, coaching, ownership, etc.

You will never find a hockey forum that strictly sticks to discussing a teams wins and loses, just as you will never find a video game forum that only talks about current and upcoming releases.

Just leave the Nintendo economics talk to all the people that actually have some sort of involvement in it.

I am very tired of the "I know how to fix Nintendo" threads on the internet.

The main issue is that most gamers put himself/herself (not themselves) in the center of all hypothetical decisions. They often ignore every other factor, and they try to justify their decision with some ridiculous logic.

It's one thing to say "I wish this would happen", but another to say "Nintendo is a bunch of morons because they don't release the game I want!"

It's pretty bad when I have some of the most reasonable ideas on how to run a video game company. That's how bad it is.
