Topic: Any advice for College?

I am going away for college in a few weeks and I am just asking if anyone has any advice they would like to share with me I would really appreciate it.

Since you said "going away," it sounds like you're already in line with my #1 rule for undergrad studies: don't go to college in your hometown unless there is simply no other option for you. It should be a time to leave your hometown and high school friends behind, be away from your parents, and finally have a chance to become who you want to be in a new context where few (if any) know you.

So, I'd also tell you to get involved in whatever extracurricular activities appeal to you, and don't just stick to your required courses. Chances are that you'll change majors at some point anyway, and you should make it your goal to get the most expansive education you can, delving into various humanities or other areas that interest you, regardless of whether they have anything to do with your degree.

Also, the undergraduate experience is a once in a lifetime deal, and there's really no other period in one's life quite like it: so don't waste it!

When you take notes, everytime the prof writes something on the board "underline it" in your notebook.

Also, when you write an essay paper, correct it both on the computer and also make corrections on a paper copy of it too. There are plently of subtle errors we miss on the computer screen.

When you write a research paper make sure you write at least 70% of the legnth needed before you contact sources because you run the risk of plagiarism if you use sources too soon. You need to find your own voice and slant first and then find a way to use the experts to back you up.

Try to major in something you enjoy, but be aware that this diminishing job market may have you to return to school to earn a second degree in something more marketable. Hopefully, something that complments your first degree.

Most of all, college is an endurance task. So keep your head up and don't fret when you feel like all your friends are going to graduate much sooner than you are.

Enjoy every minute. Not a day goes by that I don't miss college.

My advice is:
1) Learn to do laundry (i'm not kidding when I say this)
2) Become acquainted with your professors, especially the ones associated with your major
3) DO NOT study at the last minute! It will not work, I can guarantee that
4) Make sure you use a bank that has a branch near your campus
5) Dorm life is probably going to be noisy, so find a quieter place to study if you live in a dorm

Agreed... and I even work in higher education, mainly because I couldn't pull myself away, and because I know the peculiar rules of this territory too well not to take advantage of that in my career

Well, I am going to study at a college near my hometown this october, but I moved here just one and a half month ago and left all my high school friends behind, so I hope that counts too . The college has a very good rating and only took every 9th applicant - saying no, only for the sake of going "somewhere else", would have been a mistake.

I know, living at home with your parents is "lame", but it saves me a lot of money and routine work. And there is one other thing: I am not a typical student, I am insanely "stuffy" and prefer a quite home, regular and healthy bedtimes and waking up hangover free. Yeah, srsly...

And just because you're away from your parents, you should not have the "I can do whatever I want now" attitude. Everything you do does have a consequence, whether tomorrow or several years after. Use common sense when going to a party!

Also, I would say it's important not to be a "bragger."

There is nothing worse than a kid who is an argorant undergrad who acts like he or she will soon own the world. Once, these braggers graduate they usually get a rude awakening when they find out the job market sucks and you are kind of a dime a dozen.

Some tips from me (based on advices I got from my teachers, guides and other students) : what ever your are going to study (in my case its commercial information technology)

• be fit in math, maybe you should refresh your knowledge like I am doing this month
• find a group of equally skilled students and learn together (if that suits your learning style)
• here is a dirty one : dont take "losers" in your learning group which will only slow every one else down or only want to party.
• be in lectures only for 15-20 hours a week, but repeat and prepare the teached contents as good as possible . A typical week should content a total workload of 40 hours.
• find a place or activity to relax, I like to bike along rivers for example
• dont try to "challenge" your professors and dont ask yourself "why and for what am I doing this ?"

And here is one from me : nothing beats a good breakfast.

@Happyhappy Ignore all this good advice. Drink copious amounts of alcohol, take copious amounts of legal and illegal drugs and sleep with copious amounts of people. It's the one chance in life you can get away with it and studying is boring and when your all grown up with a job/kids/wifey you'll be glad you took the opportunity to have some fun. Learning's for losers,you got the rest of your life to learn stuff. ENJOY

Shorten every official deadline and due date by 48 hours. If you can get everything done for yourself with those two days to spare, it won't make a difference what else you do. Have fun, kid.

dude, i've known people who have graduated college and became burger flippers. there's no shame in getting by until something better comes along, and there's also no shame in making a career out of doing things other people think are beneath them.

@Iz2009 HEY!! This monkey ain't no flippin' burger flipper!!!! There are many many succesful people that didn't pass college or even go. Don't make assumptions based on people's education. It's just a bit of paper that proves that you can learn and repeat stuff parrot fashion. Some of the stupidest people I've met were also the most 'educated' ,it don't mean s**t.Only when you get older do you learn about the real important stuff in life. I felt that Happyhappy needed another perspective and the monkey is here to provide it. I'm glad I didn't go to college with you lot,lighten up people!
