I came across this a few minutes ago. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2009/11/04/no-televi... To sum it up, three children willingly choose to not use technology for 30 days. They hated it at first, but found something else to do by the end. I would hate doing this, I would never willingly choose to do this without there being a major life-changing circumstance (death)

Yawn. Been there done that more than once as a child and as an adult. Didn't really have a choice after a hurricane. Cool that people are getting kids to do this voluntarily though.
Not that impossible. I can happily go without my consoles for ages. Just give me a good book. Or rather, a good series of books. I'm a quick reader when I get back into it. Waterstones and the local charity shops sometimes sees more of my cash than the game shops do. Plugging through Terry Pratchett Discworld books atm, Reaper Man is the best ever. Sorry, I'm wandering off topic.

Moving to Florida has actually made me enjoy hurricanes. I remember during the worst season, we were without electricity for almost a week. I had two roommates at the time. We broke out the charcoal grill and cooked our meals that way, played card games by candle light, and when the nights were hot, we'd sleep outside. It was fantastic.
One of the most beautiful moments of my life was sleeping outside in the cool breeze, listening to a live version of Slave to the Traffic Light, just tracing the music through the stars. I loved it.
...granted, the iPod I was listening to it on probably kicks me out of the "roughing it" crowd, but that was more an electronic punctuation to the event than the digital run-on sentence that constitutes my life otherwise.
Soul Music is my favourite - I remember reading it when I was about thirteen, and I loved it more than any book I'd ever read. I don't read as much as I should, so I think I may take inspiration from this story and read more.
(I remember spending a full afternoon reading "The Restaurant at the End of The Universe", but that's a fairly short book anyway. I find it hard to read some books without my mind wandering.)
um, i could do it! hell i do it in the summer all the time! i go to the pool, hang wit friends! i dont have a phone and my ipod sits in my room cause i dont want it breaking when i mess around wit my friends! its not hard and it keeps you realaxed. you all should try it!

Seriously, Chicken. Sleeping outside is awesome, and it's just awesome how everyone comes together at those times. Every time one hits, I end up getting in the habit of living electricitiless for a week or two after it's been turned back on, not necessarily a conscious choice. I could keep going longer, too, if it weren't that everyone else has long fallen back into their old routines and suddenly playing hacky sack isn't cool anymore... no, no, can't miss our favorite TV shows.
Um... don't tell anyone in New Orleans, but I was a bit disappointed in the lack of a storm this year. ...kidding! But seriously, hurricane parties are awesome. All right, I'm done.

it is indeed. I remember when I was little when there were hurricanes about to hit and we'd all pack up and go someplace (one time to a hotel, a couple of times to my grandparents' house), and then when we weren't living in a mobile home anymore, we were the ones hosting old friends when storms hit. When Charley went down, our entire neighborhood lost power for five days... I remember like our entire section of the neighborhood was sitting outside watching them fix the power poles. it was good times.
During hurricanes, i used to hunker down with a flashlight or a candle and a book, though when one of 'em hit (looking back, it might've been Erin, i'm not sure lol), I had Donkey Kong on the GB to keep me occupied when we evacuated (it's the only time I've ever beaten that game; i seriously had nothing better to do at my grandparents' house that time). also, marshmallows. roasting marshmallows over a candle is surprisingly fun. :3

Wow. Just......wow. I cant even go to SCHOOL without a Game&Watch and my cell phone. They are tools that make my life a whole heck of a lot better. Cheers to those kids who COULD.
Throws pie at you Ok, now that i got that out of the way, i just wanna say that its easy to sneak games and other electronics at school. I dont even PLAY mine in class, i just use them during the ride on the bus, or at lunch.
@Dragon When the hurricane actually hits we usually go outside and watch, haha. Only once (Andrew, I was young) was it bad enough that we felt compelled to all huddle up in the centralmost room for an hour or two. I tried to read, but you try concentrating on a book in a bathtub with a family of six in the room and barely any light.
This is excluding Katrina, the only one we evacuated for.

The pretty well describes what I've been through. Minus Florida, the BBQ was out of the question... minus sleeping outside...just minus hot altogether. There were plenty of cool breezes though as almost all of my power outages have been due to winter storms. Then it was breaking out candles, a deck of cards, etc. Then it starts to get cold, so we shack up downstairs with the fireplace. Then a couple days later run out of wood and the stuff outside is nearly impossible to get burning (wet). Then you realize that electricity is not just for woosies. It's useful for heat (we had geothermal btw).
Anyway, since we moved we don't have quite the same problem. Now the wood stove is our main heat source as the house is really old and propane isn't cheap. And we have a nice spot to store lots of wood too.
Sean Aaron ~ "The secret is out: I'm really an American cat-girl." Q: How many physicists does it take to change a light bulb? A: Two, one to hold the light bulb, the other to rotate the universe.
Been there, done that, got my photo taken and had it printed on a t-shirt. Still at least these kids seem to have some sort of backbone which is more than I can say for most people. It seems we live in society when most 7-year olds can't go 12 hours without, and my voice is dripping with sarcasm as I say this, "Totally pwning some n00bs online".
@Adam: it's pretty boring when a hurricane is just starting up, lol... after we moved to an actual house, we'd go out onto the back porch sometimes and watch, but the only reason i'd bother with actually stepping outside into a storm would be to take one of the dogs out, lol, or if the eye was passing over. after '98, I don't do tornadoes. :3 but I do do card games and other indoor activities.
I only remember actually evacuating for a hurricane twice... once was to a hotel, and the other was to my grandparents' house. evacuating was fun for us kids, lol. :3
